I'm really looking forward to this year's sinulog mardi gras because they will be international contingents participating for the first time. If i'm not mistaken their from the USA.Me and my cousins we're also planning to sell mineral water and tatoo/henas (erasable one's) so as to enjoy ourselves fully. I'm fortunate that I'm here to do all this. Later in the afternoon maybe we will walk along the stretch of Osmena Blvd strawling among the locals and foreigners alike. Maybe, just may I can spot
SPeedy on the streets too dancing? holding the rope? or taking a picture? or just walking with friends like me.

Sinulog 2008 parade to go international
CEBU CITY, Nov. 22 (PNA) – Organizers of Sinulog, Cebu’s biggest festival, have said they are designing the Sinulog 2008 on January 20 for an international audience, applying some of the things they learned from shows in Las Vegas, USA.
The Sinulog Foundation Inc. said the Sinulog grand parade will shift from the Asian-inspired theme last January when Cebu hosted the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit to the theme “Sinulog Goes International.”
Sinulog project director Dolores Suzara said the Sinulog will reach out to countries in America and Europe, after showing the public the festivals and culture of 16 Asian countries last January.
”The shows we saw in Las Vegas were every enriching in terms of learning concepts in productions. The props are something to behold and we will try our best to use them here. Definitely we will have something new for the audience next year,” she said.
She would not say yet what the innovations will be, saying they want to surprise the Cebuanos and spectators from other provinces and abroad who have been coming back to watch the Sinulog.
Suzara and Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros were in Las Vegas from Oct. 2 to 11 to observe some shows there and get fresh ideas that can be replicated in the Sinulog parade.
The Cebu City Government funded the trip, which also gave them a chance to meet with the Cebuano community there.
During their visit, the Filipino-Visayan Association of Las Vegas told organizers they will be sponsoring an entry in the float category during the parade, and will consider sponsoring a dancing contingent.
Suzara said they will have some innovations in the Sinulog launching and in the finale, which will feature 16 dance troupes from local universities and colleges dressed in international costumes
Despite the limited funds, organizers hope to have more out-of-town contingents during the grand parade.
Suzara said they have asked the City Government for financial assistance amounting to P8 million, which will cover the cash prizes and financial assistance to some contingents from other provinces. The amount, though, has yet to be finalized. (PNA)

HISTORY OF SINULOG
SINULOG is a pageantry of faith, a festival held in honor of the Santo Nino, celebrating the origin of the island of Cebu. Sinulog is a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Santo Niño. The dance moves two steps forward and one step backward to the sound of the drums. This movement resembles the current (Sulog) of what was known as Cebu’s Pahina River. Thus, in Cebuano, they say it’s Sinulog.
More than just the meaning of the word is the significance of the dance. Historians now say that Sinulog, which is of pagan origin is the link between the country’s pagan past and its Christian present.
Historical accounts say that before Portuguese navigator came to Cebu on April 7, 1521 to plant the cross on its shore and claim the country for the King of Spain, Sinulog was already danced by the natives in honor of their wooden idols and anitos.
Then Magellan came and introduced Christianity. He gave the Santo Niño (image of the Child Jesus) as baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, wife of Cebu’s Rajah Humabon who was later named Queen Juana. At that time, not only the rulers were baptized but also about 800 of their subjects. Unfortunately however, shortly after the conversion, Magellan went into reckless adventure by fighting the reigning ruler of Mactan, Rajah Lapu-lapu, with only a handful of men. He died in the encounter. That was on April 27, 1521.

I heard they re-painted the Basilica? Does it look cleaner now? It sort of upsets me that a lot of Hispanic buildings in Cebu are just left to rot and look really disgusting. Have you seen the ones in Mexico? They are like mini noble villas, and still look clean as if they were jsut built a year ago.
Anyways, I CAN'T WAIT! As a former inhabitant of Cebu, Santo Niño will always have a place in my heart! I remember dancing to the beats hehehe.

I saw a pretty recent picture of the original Santo Niño. The picture showed it placed on a a table being examined.
It was really shiny, made of numerous gold and pearls. I'll try to find it.
