There are North Vietnam and South Vietnam before the war, separated by Cầu Hiền Lương. After the war, there are 3 regions, North, Central and South. I'm just curious why is there a central region?

Erh... the 3 regions were created by the French: Annam (Central), Indochina (South), and Tonkin (North) for easy control of their colonies.

Yes, I know that, but we've been north and south for awhile though...

May I correct it, my fellow Dai Viet? The South was called Cochinchina not Indochina. Indochina implies three French colonized states: Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Since Vietnam was Chinese influences, Laos and Combodia were Indian influences, hence the French came up with the term IndoChina.

Politically, Vietnam was partitioned into two, North and South during the Vietnam War just like North and South Korea.

As far as I know, emperor Minh Mang divided the country into 5 kỳ: Bắc Kỳ, Nam Kỳ, Tả Kỳ, Hữu Kỳ, and Kinh Kỳ (the capital), in which Bắc Kỳ and Nam Kỳ's domains were the same like now. Therefore I suggest Trung Kỳ comprises of historical Tả Kỳ, Hữu Kỳ and Kinh Kỳ. Please correct me if I am wrong, thanks.
