THE UNIVERSITY of the East Warriors are definitely the surprise kids of the 67th UAAP varsity basketball season.
Despite a rookie-laden roster under first-year coach Dindo Pumaren, the Warriors pulled a stunner by bringing down the De La Salle University Archers, 82-79, yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.
UE's dusky forward, KG Canaleta, shot a career-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds in another sensational performance. Paolo Hubalde backed him up with 20 points.
"I told my boys to keep it close. It was sad that (my brother) Franz lost but our team is hungrier than La Salle. Maybe it's because we have something to prove," said coach Dindo Pumaren, whose team also shocked favored Adamson University ten days ago.
University of Santo Tomas also came out on top of a close contest, downing Adamson, 70-65, behind Jemal Vizcarra's 23 points.
UE, La Salle and UST ended their first-round campaign tied for third with 4-3 slates. Adamson slipped to fourth at 3-4.
