I've made up my mind. I'll be moving to Canada in the next few years.

Having a university education and an Australian passport (also a Constitutional Monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of State and a member of the Commonwealth) I think I have a good chance of applying for citizenship and getting it.

What is each province of Canada like?

What's it like up in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories?

And Where would I fit best? I have a pretty thick Australian/English accent so I'll prolly stay away from Quebec. laugh.gif

The more I find out about Canada, the more I love it.

dfl
What is each province of Canada like?
BC - Mountains, Ocean, Skiing/Snowboarding, Asians (in Richmond)
Alberta - Beef, Cowboy hats, Calgary Stampede, Country music
Saskatchewan - Cornfields, Wheat, or any kind of crops, flat land
Manitoba - Natives, Lakes, nothing much
Ontario - Urban, Lakes, CN Tower, Parliament Building, Asians (in Richmond Hill icon_smile.gif )
Quebec - French people, Nightlife, Factories.
NB, NFLD, NS, and PEI - Fishing, Coastal, Ocean, Beer.

What's it like up in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories?
No one goes there. I don't think anyone cares.

And Where would I fit best? I have a pretty thick Australian/English accent so I'll prolly stay away from Quebec. laugh.gif
Anywhere really, Aus/English accent is considered pretty cool up here.

The more I find out about Canada, the more I love it.

Well, its really depend on what you are moving here for and what you want to do for a job. If you be specific, I can help.

lol you Canadian Newbie laugh.gif. Sometime in the future you should plan a road trip to travel across highway 1.

I haven't traveled across all the provinces, but I can safely say my favorite cities I wouldn't mind living in are the Toronto area, Montreal, Vancouver, and Winnipeg ... mainly because there are alot of Asians living in these areas.

As for the territories I have only been to Yellowknife (NW territory) for a job interview and I absolutely hated it. It's a little gloomy mining city. The people that I met there were only there for work. Most had homes in other provinces and only stayed there for a few months at a time.

You would probably best fit in in cities like Toronto or Vancouver, since they are gateway centers to Canada and there are already alot of immigrants in both areas

We only have one road!!!
Oh, and if ya hate snow, go to BC. (but plenty of snow on the mountain tops there for snowboarding)

The cold weather is the biggest reason I'm moving there. biggrin.gif

I'm also not too crazy about immigrants. I'd actually perfer somewhere with a lot of French folk, but Quebec seems a little on the extreme side. I was surprised to hear a lot of em don't even speak English, or don't want to.

I suppose I should better get cracking on my French. laugh.gif

OMG can we stop telling immigrants to move to the big cities? Goddamnit we're full.

Move to St. John's.

You might like Montréal. There is a big english community here and most french québecers are all bilingual to a certain extent (outside of MTL, it's predominetly french), nightlife is cool, you don't really need a car to get around, girls are pretty, and rents (apt.) are the cheapest of the 3 major cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal). But ''unfortunatly'' for you, their are plenty of immigrants here (you'll be one!!!)...but see it this way: you can eat all kinds of great food from around the globe!
You might also wanna learn some french...cuz almost everything is written in french: street signs, highway panels, restaurant menues and so on...

Btw, it's -17C (1F) here today.
Urrr! I wish I was in Australia right now. beerchug.gif

Ok switch with me. laugh.gif

And I thought by law they were supposed to have signs in both languages.

The only thing I don't like about certain immigrants is their reluctance to assimilate. And that is by no means to suggest they should forget their own culture and language.

But I've seen some pretty extremes. For instance I know people who have lived here for like 30 years and still haven't learned English properly. What the fu-k is that?

When I moved to Australia I became fluent in English in a little over 6 months.

I don't like people who stick to tight groups and create their own little country within a country. China town, Korea town, little Italy and what have you. It's like if that's what you want why don't you just move back? You had that to begin with!

I like it when people mix in with each other. Nothing pisses me off like group and tribal mentality. It's very animal like. Creeps me out.

So I suppose I shouldn't stay away from people like that and set an example instead. But a lot of eastern cultures are not very open to outsiders. They very often display the very behaviours they themselves are constantly accusing westerners of who by comparison are much more open and friendly people.
Wardrum80
I feel the same about this tribe mentality. It's like that for 1st generation immigrants (and normal i think). But their kids usually end up fine and more integrated.
jose cuervo
^He's right. 1st generation immigrants are like that, but their children that either grew up as little kids in the host country or born there are well integrated. I really do like Canada in that respect that it's so tolerant and progressive.

BTW Arash, I think you as a possible future immigrant to Canada shouldn't be exhibiting signs of xenophobia, because it's just well.............. hypocritical.

Arash
I'm mostly just expressing opinion about somethings I don't like. I actually don't feel very strongly about any of these things.

I get along fine with everybody in real life.

We called them Natives/Aboriginals/''Indians''/First Nation People/Inuits...they look like american natives i guess (except the Inuits, who looks east asian kinda).
They live on reserves where they pay no taxes, at least here in Quebec. High rate of alcoholism, domestic violence, suicide and unemployment. Difficulties to ''intergrate'' society. Pretty much all the contraband cigarettes smoked in Montréal are from Kanesatke (their biggest export), the closest Mohawk reserve. There is 6 Indian tribes in Québec.

I think the Natives in Alberta and BC have it better.

Don't they (Aussie-Aboriginals) face the same problems in Australia?

Well up here in Toronto, seeing a native american is rare sight unless you actually go out of your way to find one.

The ones I've met are pretty nice just because they are in community involvement helping out other native americans who have financial/family etc. problems.

Aboriginals are by far not rare. I wish they were. biggrin.gif

The ones that live in the country are very nice people. But the city ones can be extremely unpleasant. Pretty much the same things you described.

Agreed and the government won't apreciate it either.

After reading the paper I found this story. A Filipino man living in Quebec who has been harrased with racial slurs and garbage dumping on his lawn by his neighbor has been awarded moral and punitive damages. It took 4 years but he was vindicated by the courts. This info is not in the link but I remember reading from the paper that the neigbor tried to settle for 1000 $ but the court demanded they pay 8 000 $ embarassedlaugh.gif .... what's even more hilarious is that his neighbor is also an immigrant, yet the Filipino man was quoted as saying this

"I confronted the neighbour and he told me to 'go back to your country' and called me a 'cochon'" laugh.gif

I'm not going to criticize texas because I've only spent a day there, but don't judge an entire province just because of one incident. As far as I know (judging from experience), the general public in Québec is very tolerant, and are even more accepting if you make an effort to learn/speak fluent French. Of course, that adds to the whole tense atmosphere that I sometimes feel... Lol... If someone says something prejudiced around people they don't know, everyone gets all uncomfortable and offended regardless of race, religion, gender or sexuality lol.

Je v déménager o québec ^______________^

There's still MUCH work to be done in Canada though. Personally I prefer indifference over tolerance. icon_rolleyes.gif

Well that's true also. I think Quebec is pretty tolerant due to the fact that it really isn't affected with much of the U.S. stereotyping and ideology due to the fact that it's pretty more French-influenced than American-influenced. However that really can't help surpress the racism over there though. I'm pretty sure I like the way you Canadians say that your offended no matter the target race, over here in the U.S. only the targeted race gets offended, over up North everyone freaks out.

If for any reason you're not welcome in Canada, think about California. If you like the cold you could live in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Get a job at Lake Tahoe working in casino management. You would also have the chance to occasionally hang out with an old man and get loaded.
