I hate to generalize Filipinos but damn!. Every Filipino family I know has at least one relative that's a nurse. My mother's a nurse, my sisters studying to be a nurse, her boyfriend is studying to be a nurse, and I don't even want to mention my cousins and aunts.

martin_nuke
Its a way to go abroad and earn a high paying job even if they do not really want to be a nurse.

First there was the Japayuki then the Domestic Helper then the Factory Worker then the Computer Professional then the Nurse then it goes on an on...
streetsmartchic
yeah.. almost every family have nurse nursing student RN working abroad.... well my boyfriend is a nurse, his sister is a nurse his aunties are nurse abroad, on my side i have 4 cousins taking up nursing... i have neighbors who are nurse and nursing students, i have friends who just got their license .... hmmm almost 55 percent of my highschool batchmates took up nursing... That why i didn't take it... i'm supposed to be a nurse!!! NO REGRETS
speedyg0nzalez2
until now that is...

CHED will be monitoring universities with nursing courses and will close new colleges that will open the course nursing since there are
just too many nurses nowadays....

seriously, filipinos should stop being a sheep
its like most people would just go for nursing just because that's what most students are taking up nowadays...

kinda cheap

It's such an easy course to pass. My sister did it. My aunt did it, and so many people I know who just want to get into the money. It's quick and easy to get into, the pay is so high and the job is really stable because you can't really make mistakes because who ever heard if anyone filing malpractice charges agains a nurse? Once you're into it, you can't lose. Set for life.

It's a global trend I refer to, so perhaps The Philippines is just following the way of the World?

sitataymo
Nurses are in high demand all over the world and developed countries are so short of them that they send recruiters in places like the Philippines to recruit nurses. It's a recession proof career and offers alot of opportunities, not to mention the big pay with great benefits.
felltohell
they want to leave the country...
landoftherisingbum
the reasons are quite obvious (self-explanatory) laugh.gif
Henry123
Pretty much what sitataymo said.

Plus Phillipinos are soo nice people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! beerchug.gif

THIS IS SOOOO STUPID!

Nurses are paid very well and you can work anywhere in the world.
iMumble
My mother is a nurse. icon_neutral.gif

As well as my aunt in Sugar Land.

I assume nursing is popular because it's the only way people in the Philippines can really get out of the country.

Its not being a sheep stooge... you can almost guarantee that you can get a job after you finish it. Not everybody was born with a silver spoon like you, kiddo. Being a nurse is not trying to be "cool" but a matter of survival.

i didn't mean that EVERY filipino goes into nursing. you gotta admit though, nurses is pretty common among filipinos... i know more than enough

why does the industry have to be easy to get into? embarassedlaugh.gif

Yeah, in canada nursing is common. So are factory jobs, janitorial and secretary positions. Like I said, anything easy to get into we are in it. So I dont know what you exactly suggested with that nursing $hit, but you obviously suggested something stereotypical like a filipino would more likely go into nursing than something else.

Filipinos usually go in places where they can go in easier yet get decent wages. That only goes for 1st genaration filipinos though, 2nd generation and above usually go in higher and more paying jobs because their life have given them more choices. Thats why you see so many filipinos working in factories, even if you combine all the filipinos working in a higher field the numbers are not even close if you compare them to filipinos who work labour jobs.

Kiss_the_Girls
^^Are you comparing Nursing to Factory work??

I like this thread...... I'm not sure about the statistical amount of nurses out there, but whatabout if the whole world is being run by nurses?? Wouldn't be nice for everyone to have two or three degrees at least? Just in case the economy shifts? It's always good to be dextrous/knowledgable at different fields.

My sister graduated in Civil Engineering then moved to Occupational Therapist and now studying Nursing.... LOL, she just goes where there's moolah.

Let's see. I eat spam and fried rice, play guitar, sing in an acapella group, drive a Honda Accord, currently studying Computer Engineering, and my mom's a nurse while my dad is an anesthesiologist living/working in Singapore. I drink, I gamble with friends, go karaokeing, and ballroom dancing. What did I miss?
Oh, my dad wants me to become a doctor as well.

In terms of high paying jobs for women (traditionally associated with women in society that is) there simply isnt a whole lot of them.
Nursing is one of the few (not soley) high paying jobs that women can get & yet be still consider socially acceptible.

Doesn't occupational therapist pays well? I would choose that over nursing probably just base on the supply and demand from this thread..

Why are nurses in high demand? I propose that dispite their "professional" status like the teaching profession their compensation is the same as a senior unionized factory worker. With much worse working conditions, around sick and dying people, working all shifts, weekends and holidays. So it is almost as hard to get natives willing to be nurses as domestic help. Afterall all that time and education gets you the same benefit as a mailman working a few hours of overtime.. However for the OFW that factory worker"s income is many times that of the maids income.
mndeg
because it's good money? you can earn 100k a year if you do enough overtime

... compare that to the average wage in the phillipines.

how many of your parents earn around 100k? and if they do what is their education?

exactly.

If all Filipinos can be only menial laborers in your country even when you don't really know whether they are first or second generation immigrants then you are at the point of racially profiling Filipinos as menial laborers.

Yah there are Filipino factory workers, no one is denying that. I know of one, and she works in a factory because she never got a chance at ANY sort of education because her parents couldn;t afford to send all their children to school, and being the eldest, she got shafted.

But kaysea (and I) were talking about the BIG picture. Everyone's got a friend or two BORN IN CANADA that wants to be a nurse. If all your friends that are born here are still don't want to get an education and are fine doing menial jobs or working in retail full-time, then your friends are either stupid or lazy as fu-k. icon_rolleyes.gif
