I noticed that a lot of members actually stick to their native culture threads and don't wander off to say, off-topic. I think it'd be a good way to shoot the $hit with AF members who only visit culture sections.
theng
Look at Indonesian Chat.

I bet 80-90% of the posts made in that Chat are off topic
han2
^^ you beat me to it, but yeah, it's true.

an offtopic section would cut down on many regular members going offtopic on what's supposed to be legitimate topics.

maybe a just a coincidence, but it seems that those cultural sections with a very high average number of replies/number of topics ratio are the ones most likely to have offtopic posts.

Indonesian Chat offers a lot interesting threads. It's just that it seems to me that most of the posts weren't written in fluent English but bahasa Indonesian which is slightly(or more than slightly)different than Melayu thus I have trouble understanding them well. And members like GrandmasterC,furansizuka etc etc (and they are among those few that have the highest post count yet they are only posting in culture section) went off topic here and there.

Same could be said about malaysian chat. There are tons of members who start threads/ reply to threads in their native tongue and member's who aren't familiar with that language have problems understanding them.

Grandmaster C is around since February 2005 and has 2,111, that's what you call a high post count ?

Furansizuka is a member since September 2004 and has 10,453 posts. I have seen members who aren't even a member for a year and have as much posts as furansizuka.

What about members who DO visit the off topic section, but still go off topic in every other forum other than the off topic forum ? Members like Takashi, charlee, felltohell(+ her old account), tujue, P.Bredahl, Sonny angel, theng(+ her old accounts), canister, iMumble, who have a very high post count, mostly from going off topic in regular sections.

Why don't we convert all sections on AF into off topic sections ? biggthumpup.gif

Plus my reply wasn't off topic.

Yeah I know, I can see my posts. Creating an off-topic thread in the culture section provides a forum for culture section members to chat. The one thing I noticed in Chinese chat is that no one there chats with each other. It's all arguing, and having a thread like that will allow culture members to know each other better. It helps if they don't want to talk to anyone else who doesn't share their culture interests.
han2
yeah, actually this could be a very good idea, so instead of arguing and flaming each other, they could chill and get to know each other, instead.
SantaKlaws
If that so-called "cultural off-topic" section has those pics that I want, I may go there. Otherwise, I see little point.

The non-cultural sections, such as "AF Lounge", already serve such a purpose. The very term "cultural off-topic" is itself hypocritical, as cultural topics aren't very "off".

Then again, if there is a cultural off-topic section where any controversial issues are banned in entirety, perhaps that would be a good idea. Still, controversies will nonetheless exist as to which issues are to be considered "controversial", to the extent that some lame @$$ troll would whine and b!tch about some historical drama and etc.

I don't think it would really help to decrease off topic posts. There is already an off topic sub-forum in the AF lounge section, yet members, who don't just stick to the culture forums, go off topic in the entertainment sections all the time.

I don't know how it should work for the culture forums, If it doesn't work for the entertainment forums.

Just start threads where chinese members could get to know each other better then, for instance a thread called "Chinese members, let's get to know each other better". laugh.gif << That was just a poor example btw.

Or just start threads like han2's threads in indo chat.

indochat, guess something about the person below you!

Indochatters what song/music are you listening to now?

Indochat, which other sites do you frequently visit?

Indochat, post of any silly/weird/odd/funny stories...

I'm not 100% sure If it's allowed to start such threads in the culture section though, since han2 warned other people for starting similar threads. Guess we need Ben's input about this here.

From what I have noticed,it's not rife in Malaysian Chat compared to how it is in Indonesian Chat. There are a few newbies that posted in their native tongue and some of us did communicate in Malay in certain threads like "Mamak".Malaysian Chat members also hardly interacted with each other in a more personal way.All they talked about was what I considered to be serious issues and it wasn't that active compared to other chats.
I always thought GrandmasterC had veryyyyy high post count along with another dude named...ana-what hmmm I couldn't remember his SN besides Furansizuka. icon_confused.gif I guess next time I should just do some searching first.

And how many OLD indo members post in their native tongue regularly ? You can see some members make post in their native tongue here and then, but it's mostly the n00bs with 100 something posts who start threads in bahasa indonesia.

You mean Aranadhel, he has 8,099 posts, he joined in september 2005.

Boinky who has joined in June 2007 has 8403 posts, felltohell joined in August 2007 and has 6,238 posts, If you add the ones from her other account to it, it would be about 10,000, iMumble joined in June 2007 and has 6,744 posts.

LOL You handed out soo many warning to so many people, it would take me hours to find the right warning, I really don't have the time for such things. And I can't ask those members to post in here either, because they already left AF and post nowadays on an AF copycat forum called asian folks or something, which was created by a banned AF member. Even an indo member called purple, who is a mod, pretty much left AF because of a certain moderator.

I dont' think we have a problem with your suggestion of a Cultural Off-topic thread in every chat where folks can get to know each other better blah blah...

What we have a PROBLEM with is an over-zealous mod who makes it his business to warn for every slight infraction and mistakes and piss the forumers.

I have experienced that with han2 in Indochat. So have several other Indochatters. to this day, there is still complaints about his modding, just check this thread. It is a long story the chaos han2 created with his modding style in Indochat, for this reason, we are glad he's out of the Indochat modship.

Sorry no offence here. Just setting the record straight. biggrin.gif

And yes! Let's have cultural off-topic whatever dumpster thread in every chat!! beerchug.gif

funny sometimes i wander into the culture chats like indo and find members i didnt even know existed and theyve been members since like '05 with 1000+ posts, lol.

Why is there such a big need about getting people on Indochat not to talk shop and post emoticons that mean something to them, but not to an occasional lurker like Theng?

Why is there such a big need about getting people NOT to post in their native language and to get out of their culture chats into other chats?

What kind of talk is this?? Mod Nazism on the rise?

Why don't u mods juz chill out and let people be who they wanna be, what they wanna do and say??

An active and vibrant discussion forum needs the freedom to grow in an "organic" way - too many restrictions will stifle communication.
Like a strong tree, a strong forum needs a large variety of input, it's fair share of water, sunshine and nutrients, in order to continue growing.
If you do too much pruning you will kill it.

Moderation is needed to reign in some of the endless slug-fests, but the moderation emphasis should be on guidance and infusing topics with interest, rather than banning members.
To deal with the reality of the world, we all need a sense of humour. laugh.gif

Oh please, what some people call as off-topic postings might be the only reason why a chat is still alive and kicking. As long as they don't go to the extreme, there's no need to restrict them.

The thing with han2 is, he's uber sanctimonious. He's to anal with the rules sometimes, but only to people that he has personal sentiment to. I mean he gave me 33% warning for saying "dumbo" and "idiot", totally ignoring the fact that I was provoked. And whatever happened to "verbal warning"? I see a lot of people saying worse things than those, and all they got are verbal warning. Or this kind of attitude reserved for Indonesian Chat members only, han2?

If saying such trifle words made me deserving of the 33% warning, fine by me. But then you have to give the others who said similar and worse things the same treatment. That would surely send AF to ghost town. At 1st, I avoid making a direct attack on han2 as I was still trying to think positively about him (hey, maybe he simply wants order, discipline is good right? it's a good thing that there's still a man of justice around, etc etc), but now I really question his right to be in the mod position. He's obviously disturbed and has a personal grudge against us, not a very good quality for a mod thumbsdown.gif

Another thing, what's wrong with staying in one forum only? There are members who came to AF only to be all fan-girly in forums such as entertainment, and nobody bothers with them. Not that I have anything against the idea of Cultural Off-topic, but I don't feel the actual need for it. I mean, what's the meaning of cultural off-topic anyway?

(i hope the topic starter doesnt mind me goin on with this dicsussion otherwise just delete or move it.
the reason i continue is because this is a very rare phenomenon. see this han2 entity never used to reply my posts :b)

the fact remains, calling anyone a retard is inflammatory.

so?
i'm not naming names.
the world is loaded with retards. you're sayin there arent any on this forum?
wake up.

nice try for trying to put words in my mouth.

according to you i neff.
you must be an idiot to want a high post count. hence my rhetorical question.

QUOTE(han2 @ Feb 4 2008, 09:20 PM)
what's there to discuss when one repeatedly going offtopic, the fact is it's against the rules.

seriously i'm getn tired of this. arent you getn tired of yerself?
you have yer own definition of "repeatedly", "habitually", etc.

QUOTE(han2 @ Feb 4 2008, 09:20 PM)
you got banned in the first place because you kept going offtopic, even after being warned, and your warning level reached 100%.

like i said before, you banned me cause in your eyes it was off topic.
you gave me 100% while i was talkin about the topic itself.
btw you were eager to give me a perm ban and eventually you did.
imo the temp ban i got was unjust, so i made another account.
instead of warning me about this, you just gave me a perm ban.

i dont make assumptions.

in that case, you're either oblivious to yourself, or have very poor judgement.

no, you're the one who is ignorant. the problem is you cant get it to yer brain that this is a subjective matter.
you see things they way you want to see them.

are you tryin to seduce me?
why do you keep mentioning my name?
i dont see what the problem is, you complain about me, but you arent even active in the indo chat.
if you dont like what you see then leave the indo chat alone.

You mean going offtopic? That’s your trademark, lol…
Since you’re obviously under the impression that you should be able to do anything you want at AF, and that when you break the rules, it should be OK, since everything, including rules, are subjective according to you, there’s no more point in me responding to you after this.
The only reason I responded up to now, is because I gave you the benefit of the doubt, thinking that you might actually be a sensible guy who could listen to reason, obviously I was wrong.
Btw, it would be a good idea to stop calling others as retards, doing that really shows off your ignorance.

That is laughable.
Writers who are constructive should be encouraged by the admin and mods.
If moderators want to enforce the rules of fair speech, then they should try offering some guidance to the flamers in topics such as this. When a topic turns into a torrent of abuse and members tell each other to "get the fcuk off AF", I believe that some moderation is warranted.

one of us have to take the red pill.

Well thanks for mentioning my name for several times in here icon_wink.gif Why do I hesitate to wander around other forums? because maybe what other peeps think they're off-topic chats, for me and indochat members they're the other way around. AFAIK Indochat is more lively and warm with their topics compare to other forums. What's the aim of making the forums? IMO forum should make the members feel happy and comfortable. We can't force someone to wander off, even mods shouldn't fuss about this light chitchat because this kinda chat makes the members bound to each other and loyal to AF.
And I agree with Pun187, most of indochat members have the backup forum called asiafolk when something bad happens just like in the past when the power abuse was used by han2. We came back after he's out of indochat modship.
Sorry no offense here too, just setting the record straight too like sista Wizy biggrin.gif

What the hell.

exactly, seems like a thread made by the OP asking whether creating an offtopic thread in cultural sections is allowed or not, has been steered into another moaning thread.
Closing this, as OP has now made an offtopic/rt thread.
