Full Version: How do you feel about other people speaking your language

For example, if you see an American spell the word "colour" or if you hear a foreigner speaking your native language.

Is it like nails on a chalk board to you, butchering the language?

Are you happy to see someone making the effort to communicate on your grounds?

Does it surprise you?

How do you feel about it/ react to it.

Me personally; I love it when I hear non-hispanics speaking the language biggthumpup.gif (and I'm equally disgusted by hispanics in America that don't speak English. thumbsdown.gif )

I was in DC and a German couple's child wanted to play with my puppy. We made small talk for a moment and I could tell right away they were from Germany. When parting, they said goodbye, and I said "tschus" and the woman got a little excited and said it back. When I was in Germany, my neighbors loved trying to speak English with me and would get so excited about it.

I think it's cool when I hear people make the effort. However, I do hate it when people go straight for diction, and don't bother to try to pronounce things properly. icon_neutral.gif

I only ask bec. a friend of mine has gotten into the habit of calling me a "sheila." That and I like the word "poofter" and I want to use it. embarassedlaugh.gif

Holla,

I appreciate it when people make the effort but when they unthinkingly pronounce words to fit their tongue I get super irritated, but sometimes its so funny. Must be a southern or country thing, but my Chef Instructor yesterday in class pronounced suviche (don't know how its spelled) as seveechee. He also says Pho as Fuu embarassedlaugh.gif

P. Bredahl
was asked by a english(i think) couple about direction it sounded cute =D

Only when I'm angry or excited. kiss.gif Or if I'm around a bunch of other latinos.
XigonCongchua
It's okay when they speak proper and decent Vietnamese but I get really pissed off when they're trying to say some dirty phrase in Vietnamese and think they're so good while in fact they pronounce the words all wrong.

i see it an act of humity when a foreginer tries to make an effort to communicate with me using my native language....
you see bred talks to me and when he does he can only say "bayot" embarassedlaugh.gif
han2 was great with his new year's greetings.. i myself can't even say " have a merry christmas and a prosperous new year" in Waray... icon_redface.gif
and babelone stumbles a lot but now he's improving

actually the difference with how the Spaniards and the Americans colonized us...
just an observation..
the Spaniards learned our local languages here...
well they weren't trying to be humble.. just their way of conquering and othering us...
for the Americans on the other hand, they made us learn English and now we're all working on enslaving the language for our own convenience...

just sharing
Federico
I think it can be cool but it can also easily be insulting, here in America anyways.

as long as they do it to make an effort to connect and communicate not to ridicule

Uhh I'm generally quite pleased and amused. It's the last I can do, since I myself like speaking other languages.

There was a white guy on AF maybe 3 years back whose Tagalog was flawless. People didn't praise him― we treated him like any other Filipino. I think when people start going "oh, you're so good! but you're WHITE" it starts to get a little retarded. It's not like your race dictates what language you speak anyways. I'm typing in English right now....

But 'my' language is English. I'm used to people speaking English. Doesn't really cross my mind much. I live in a city where around 60% of the population has some sort of accent... embarassedlaugh.gif

In my experience, Spanish speakers absolutely hate it when you try to speak their language. They give you what I call a "¿kien carajo te crees q eres?¿" look and te mira de arriba abajo como un idiota.. :S :S :S Consequently I HATE speaking Spanish and I only use it when forced or when I have a good feeling the person I'm talking to isn't going to be a jackass about it, which is usually NOT the case. Talktohand.gif

I don't see the point in having a bad attitude towards people learning your language. I guess so many people are learning Spanish these days that they're feeling like their property is being stepped on? Lol... icon_neutral.gif

By chance I met a few men and women who can speak VN fluently. Very interesting when we talked in VNese.

Honestly I would find it odd and weird if I find anyone else speaking Tagalog, not because I'm too ignorant or prejudiced or anything like that, it's just that I don't see it very often and I'm just not used to it. But I wouldn't mind it at all once I get used to it.

I think it's pretty cool. There was this guy who grew up next door to my cousin's aunty and for some reason or another he learned to speak Khmer quite well (he's white). He can hold conversations as good as I can, possibly better and he can also read and write at a very basic level, meaning he can write your name in Khmer... but it'll take him like a minute or so. hehe. it's pretty cool.

The spanish speakers in this area love it when others speak spanish.

I have to say, at least %30 of the white americans in my office speak spanish fluently, it's awesome. biggthumpup.gif

Why are Canadian Latinos so uppity for? Talktohand.gif

The only Spanish speaker I feel comfortable talking to is one of my best friends. Everyone else just gives me the cold shoulder. Oh, and I speak Spanish to the school librarian, who is Acadian. embarassedlaugh.gif I speak to her in Spanish only because she says no one elseappreciates her Spanish either. well, american english has always been a slang version of the original english language in the europeans. an english teacher told me some time ago in high school...I think.

for the most part, I've heard missionaries speaking fluent hmong. I'm unresponsive to it. if it's not fluent, I'm unresponsive to it also.

I'd like to think our english is more of a dialect than just slang. They have their own slang in England just like we have ours here.

White people will NEVER understand how Chinese accents work, so they should jsut stop trying. All they do is perpetuate the stereotype that they're awkward and cheesy.

i think its good if they are trying to make a honest effort to try and speak it correctly and learn the language, even if all they want is to learn how to ask "where is the bathroom?".

i just cant stand it when when dudes go around spitting "ni hao ma", "knoichiwa", or "anyohaseo" to any girl that looks asian and expects them to drop their panties.
thaoclangurl
I have no problem with accents for the most part so I don't really see it as a problem. At least they are trying to learn another language. LDS Missionaries speak better Hmong than I do. It trips me out every time. But then again, I did meet a Hmong guy with a very heavy Southern drawl. That was STRANGE indeed
