I don't understand why this would ever be in doubt. Yes, there are some Spanish descendants due to the colonization by Spain. But most Filipinos have little, if any, Spanish blood. By ancestry, they are primarily Malays. So they would have a shared ancestry with countries in South East Asia like Malaysia or Singapore (some of them). There is never a question that these countries are Asian, so why the big fuss? Yes, culturally, there are Spanish influences, but the Philippines is an Asian country. Asians don't look alike, so that is not a good excuse. Features vary region by region.

We cant just blame Filipinos for this confusion because other Asians help to add to it too. Just the other day, this Vietnamese dude was trying to tell me that Filipinos aren't Asian becuase we dont do "traditional Asian things" like use chopsticks, the Philippines is "way out there in the Pacific Ocean", we dont "look Asian", and we have Spanish last names.
Even after I offered an explanation for each thing, he still wasn't convinced. See, some other Asians have this idea of what Asians are suppose to be, and they feel like Filipinos dont qualify. Most Filipinos I know identify themselves as Asian. So there should be no debate about it.

Filipinos are definitely Asian, even though some Filipinos look more Hispanic or Mestizo by appearance. One of my best friends is Filipino, but he looks absolutely Mestizo by appearance and everybody thinks he's Mexican (even me when I first met him)!
East Asians don't consider filipinos to be Asian in much the same way they don't consider Indians to be Asian.
It's because to East Asians, the only people who can be considered "real" Asians are those who are of Mongoloid ("Oriental") descent.

QUOTE
The word Asia originated from the Ancient Greek word "ΑÏÆ’ία", first attributed to Herodotus (about 440 BC) in reference to Anatolia or, for the purposes of describing the Persian Wars, to the Persian Empire, in contrast to Greece and Egypt. Herodotus comments that he is puzzled as to why three women's names are used to describe one enormous and substinant land mass (Europa, Asia, and Libya, referring to Africa), stating that most Greeks assumed that Asia was named after the wife of Prometheus but that the Lydians say it was named after Asias, son of Cotys who passed the name on to a tribe in Sardis.

Persians aren't Asians just because they are on the Asian continent. Then, that would mean Russians are Asians. By your logic, then Mexicans and Canadians would be Americans. They are North Americans. Europeans don't have the most accurate views on race. We can see that by your classification of Asians as Orientals. So you STFU and leave if you don't like this thread. Persians are Middle Easterners.

Latin Americans consider themselves Americans (because they're on the American continent) and resent the fact that the term "American" is used only to describe people living in the US.
I'm not sure what Canadians consider themselves. Just North Americans?

The whole Asian/Pacific Islander debate never really bothered me when I was growing up because I always saw Asian and Pacific Islander together on forms and stuff like that, so I thought that they were basically the same. I think alot of Filipinos still think that way because I know lots of Filipinos who have Pacific Islander as their ethnicity on myspace, but then when I ask those same ppl if they're Asian, they say yes. So i guess some Filipinos dont see a difference b/t the 2 groups.

Each country has its own perception of what is "Asian". Some countries classify them by where they're from. Some classify them by customs and culture. What one person considers Asian might be something totally different to the next person.
