I got this from the MY chat about how their royalty defines the Muslim Malay identity

Yet Royalty what defines Muslim Malay identity in MY. Without the constitutional Monarchy with Parliament, we ain't even a nation, hardly independent at all. Despite being a prop for Malay Hegemony, Royalty is the epitome of Malay culture in MY.

Sure UMNO hold the rein, thanks to Tun Dr M messing with the Royalty & taming 'em Sultans back in 1980s, but even they know the Royalty hold supreme in case of Muslim Malay identity in MY REALPOLITIK.

I was just thinking about how Malaysia and Indonesia once shared common royal ancestors which would always allow myths to be fabricated in order to consolidate the various Indo and MY clans' alliances. Even tho thru migration, demographic growth and territorial expansion, the tribe can split into many chiefdoms sharing the same language and same traditions.

But in Indonesia of today, the Royal houses no longer hold the same political clout as they used to do, when many of the local Rajas who cooperated with the Dutch were reviled by the centrists back in 1950s during independence.

I think the role of Indonesian Royalty today has been subdued during the the years of Suharto as well, but I wonder if their importance can still be revived in any way politically? Rather than ceremonially? Is it any use to reprise their roles in the political sphere?

This is pure fantasy..... you make it sounds like there's royalty wipe-out against Sumatran royal line either by Netherlands or Javanese.
The truth is the battle for power might caused the sultanates fallen from power. Western colonizer (Portugal, VOC-Dutch, British) as well as rival neighboring Sultanates could caused the fall of Sultanates in Sumatra. The Sultanates in Java especially former Mataram (now Surakarta and Yogyakarta) along with Cirebon still exist until today coz they agree to life under Netherlands rule. While OTOH sultanate of Aceh defeated by Netherlands and refuse to submit to life under Dutch rule, thus make the Sultanates rule ceased. However their offspring still exist until today.

There's still exist the remnant of royal family of Sumatran Sultans:
Nobles of Minangkabau at Pagarruyung, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra
Sultan Melayu Deli in Medan
Also the remnant of Sultanate of Palembang

There's a legend on my mothers side of the family (who are Menadonese). According to that legend we are descendants of prince Diponegoro who took a mistress when he was exiled in Manado. So, who knows? I might declare myself king of Java some day. icon_twisted.gif

Whoa, I never knew Malaysians are so eager to bask in their own fantasy that the Malays in Indonesia are repressed. Tell you what, hang, there are still a lot of royal Malay families in Indonesia, and their position is just like any other royal families in Indonesia (Javanese, Sundanese, Bugis, etc): they are just civilians like the rest of us. Indonesia is a republic after all. I support them doing their ceremonial roles, but if they want to be involved in the politics, they are just going to do it like everybody else is doing it icon_neutral.gif
