Actually, that is one of the teachings of the Buddha is for each and everyone to find out the truth for ourselves not relying on what other people say or what some book or bible say. By going to the temple and pray all the time wont bring you any closer to understanding it either.
Yes, these are the words of the Buddha, as written in the Kalama Sutta:
"Do not believe in anything
simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in traditions
simply because they have been handed
down for many generations.
Do not believe in anything
simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything
simply because it is found written in your
religious books.
Do not believe in anything
merely on the authority of your teachers
and elders.
But when, after observation and analysis,
you find anything that agrees with reason,
and is conducive to the good and benefit
of one and all,
then accept it and live up to it. "
I would add Shyna that one of the main things I had trouble "not believing in" were modern people that claim authority to answer your philosophical questions- there are plenty of people out there like that that would love to 'tell you how it is', a lot of them wearing robes. Some are good people, some just like the power trip. That being said, one of the most famous monks of the Theravada is Ajahn Chah, a Lao monk of Thai nationality, who speaks in a very straightforward and practical manner (often comparing lots of things to animals, a habit I've noticed my isaan gf do, i wonder if it's a Lao thing). Anyway, one of the main answers I would suspect you'd find to your questions is that there is a way out of this decaying life, called Enlightenment, which may be the realization that there was never a self or a life that belonged to us in the first place. -the doctorine of

I desire forever existence.
I think the idea is that "you", in the larger sense, never started nor will ever stop existing: yes, that thing in your head called consciousness
will go away when you die, but the foundation or background behind consciousness, that you had before you were born, will remain. But it is just a philosophical idea for now, and requires discipline in meditation to make it real in your heart. Just my take on it. I for one am too caught up in 'market life' to have the discipline... but maybe tomorrow...
