We adopted our wonderful daughter from Vietnam last summer, and now I’m working on a Life Book for her. The name she was given at the orphanage was Thuy (which we now have as her middle name). I knew that Thuy could mean either water or friendly/gentle, depending on the inflection, but I never knew which was hers. I scanned in the official documents we have with her name on them, and now I realize that they’re written 2 different ways ?? But looking at these, can you tell me what you think Thuy means in her case?

Thanks!
Amy

Sweet !

Thị is a tradition prefix for females

Thủy usually means water but can be a short form of good or goodness of character (Thu is just sloppy typing)

Both Thủy or Thuỷ are correct, the first one is a conventional and common one. The second one is new way of spelling and Vietnamese linguists say it's a more correct one. Just go with the first one.
