How would you guys go about doing so?

i try to clear up the misunderstandings but most times the situation gets worse.

It's understandable, no older person wants to be corrected by a younger one. Pride issue.
Depends on who I'm dealing with. At work, I'll use an intermediary. For home and personal, I just try to be very frank. The best/ easiest way to say something is to just come out and say it. If there is a misunderstaning I just say "This may not be what you were trying to say/ do, but this is how it came across..."

Don't beat around the bush, put it in and be direct - cut out the nonsense and get right to the issue and find the resolution without the influence of personal feelings/ over reactions
