Lao: Lamvong
Khmer: Roumvong
but Thai... What do the Thai's call it?

Ohh i had , my share of Khmer/Lao Weddings. I was so sick of weddings, I ended up makeing it a class project.
We share alot of simular beats and dance moves.
Lao/Khmer: as of follows
Lamvong/Ramvong. The typical general circle dance
Salavan/Saravan, This orginated in Saravan Laos, and inhabitants are of Khmer decent.
Morlam/Kantrum, same thing, different names, different language
Uniqeely Laos
Siphandone, Khonesavane, Tangvai, Phouthai, Luang Phrabang. Uses the Bamboo lute, which is exclusivly Lao.
Uniquely Khmer
Ram kbach, lam lao--> I assumed that this was of Lao origin, but the Lao people say its too fast for them. Khmer dance beats are a bit faster. Lao dance beats are slow and easy going.
To an untrained ear, they all sound the same, but I can tell whats what.
No one can outphase my drunk uncle. He can go non stop, grabbing ladies butts. Very Tance like....old peeps techno.

point_dexter,
where are the laotians of khmer descent from? southern laos? i remember watching the travel channel and it was in laos. there were people who look just like khmer. they didn't look like the typical light skinned laotian. man, khmer people are all over mainland SEAsia but so many of them have been assimilated.

Chuon-Cheat: I heard that the laotians of khmer descent originaled from the khmers who lived in the kingdom of Chen La, i.e. the current Champassack area in the southern part of Laos, which used to be part of the khmer empire. Many of these people (mostly men) migrated towards and intermarried with people (mostly women) from the central and northern parts of Laos. This has given rise to the current population of Laos. The southerners are well-known for being very patriotic citizens. I think the current Lao president and a few other high-ranking Lao officials, mostly those in the army, are from the south.

yea, it was known as Land Chenla or Upper Chenla. also, the khmer king gave Fa Ngum 10,000 soldiers to fight attacking tribes including the siams.

The most common weddings I've gone to are the ones that usually serve Henessey..if there's no alcohol, they believed that chances are..the wedded couples won't recieve the "gift money" that put in white envelopes as for paying part to replace wedding debts/future..etc.
LyDef
Sep 5 2004, 01:19 AM
Heh. Henessey and Heineken mos def. Imma name my boy Henessey. Would anyone disagree if I said alcohol plays a major role at our weddings? Lol. Its a good time to just let go, no? They have a good time, and thats all that matters.

The bride and groom also go around with shot glasses and champagne/wine/liquor to show their gratitude to the guests.
But, I don't think I've ever been to a Thai wedding. Is it that different from Lao/Khmer weddings? what do they do?

Lao call it Lamvong and Thais call it ramwong. Yess i think they are hella fun!lol I mean dancing in circles its pretty cool. There alot of lam in Laos. My family origin is savanh and what is popular lam there is tangvai! ahhah I like lam tangvai and yes ima fob. I dont know where Lam Salavan came from but i think it is tribal people bc salavan is a province that mostly consists of tribal lao-theung. Pple from salavan get offended when you mention salavan and they speak lao different. Its unexplainable. I like there lam alot! tang vai is also tribal village near savanh. That is what my parents told me. Khonesavanh and phuthai i think is the same. In the northern are of laos ppl do not call it lam. They call it Khap. In viengchan what is popular is something called khap nguem. The most popular khap of all time is something they call Khap thung luang phabang and its originally from you know were. I love this one. Its very slow and nice sounding. Pretty good melody.
Ive been to a Lao and khmer lamvong party and it is pretty fun.

I have not read anybody comments.
Just implying to the topic ''Lao Dance''
I think, Lao, Cambodia and Thailand are fairly similar in Music and culture.
I have seen Thai's apsara dance, apart from that, I have no comment.
Ok, IN cambodia, we do have Romvong, Romsaravan, Apara dance etc..............
SO IN Lao, do you have that sort of dance as I listed above.
