Yes we have epics! but we don't have movies based on our epics yet... what i know is the infamous Ibong Adarna story (not an epic) which has been turned into film quite a lot.

Our epics include, Hinilawod, Biag Ni Lam-Ang, Handiong, Indirapatra at Sulayman among others... And they are stuff that movies are made from... it's just that nobody dares... or nobody has discovered the epics' potentials... i don't know...

I know of several, like RIZAL as based on the epic of our National Hero Jose Rizal. Also one movie produced by Armuida Segion-REyna starring Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta, which was based on the book, "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte, someone help me recall its title though, it was even shot in Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte, let's see what pa ba?. . .well does those Nora / Vilma movies count? the ones based on Liwayway Comics? my Lola used to read Liwayway a lot, so i don't know if this counts. . . :coffee:
maogmang_aki
oh, i thought the epics we are refering to are those in the leagues of ethnical/or more like ancient ones... but Rizal may count i think... But the Gomez-Zulueta movie, i don't think it counted, not a Filipino epic, you know, if it is based from wuthering hts... and no those from liwayway comics wouldn't coutn too... biggrin.gif

i do too.

that would be interesting to watch filipino epics.

filipino movies that deal with action and romance all have recycled plots anyways, so they should find other ways to entice the viewers.

Well, as far as i can remember, it was about 2 hours long... Ibalong is from the Bicol Region. the protagonist is Handiong.

Lapu-lapu is not an epic but more of a historical account!
dalawapo
has that bikolano epic been transcribed or is it an oral record handed down from person to person?
maogmang_aki
During the peak of my interest to Philippine Literature, i found just fragments of the epic and a few summaries. I haven't read a full length one.

Well, it was a cultural group which performed the 2-hour Hudhud in our school. and it was shortened coz, you couldn't hold the attention of the audience for more than 3 hours at most, right? besides, it was just a good way of introducing us to the various ethnical cultures of the Philippines... :genius:

Musical Loincloths

The difference between actors and my colorful self is simple: I am mortified with the mere thought of prancing around in something closely resembling underwear while they choose to revel in it.

I was invited to watch Hudhud: An Ifugao Romance last night by one of the actors, Richard Signey because I interviewed him. I managed to force Thea to come along with me because she is the only person I could think of that would be giddy with the idea of trekking all the way to Roxas boulevard just to see something 'cultural.' (Gah. UPM people, remember the time when CCP was just there? Now, it's there. It's nutty, it's basically the same distance.)

Hudhud is actually an Ifugao tradition revolving around storytelling. It opens to a bunch of Ifugao people urging their tribe elder, Apu Baket (played by the wonderful Nonie Buencamino) to tell them the story about Bugan of old. Apu Baket makes pakipot, telling that she has forgotten, that she might not have the strength to finish the long story and that she might lose her way in the journey. But for every thing she says, the tribes people have an answer (via a very high-pitched chant --- the kind a younger sibling would use to scream "nyahahaha" at you).

Bugan of old was forced by her brother to search for her would-be-groom in a nearby town because no one in her own town is suitable enough. She takes a servant girl with her and a golden belt --- if any man fits into said belt, he would be suitable enough. When she reaches the next tribe she meets a man (I have forgotten his name. Let's just call him 'bad guy' for the purpose of this entry) who fits into the belt and who promptly rapes her. He then tells her that he already has a son and is about to married (-gasp-). Bad guy's wife with the women of the town and lashes out at the woman. Bugan then flees with her servant girl, who just woke up, and reaches a crossroads. Bugan chooses to not to go on her own journey but sends her servant girl back to her own tribe.

On her tired journey, Bugan goes into various states of delirousness and rants about the shallowness of honor in conscious intervals. She is angered that 'honor' is defined only by a few men, that her dignity is gone because a few guys say so.

She comes upon a small hut with a pot of rice cooking over a small fire. She smells the sugar cane and is reminded that she hasn't eaten for days. She bumps into another man, the owner of the hut, (let's call him 'good guy' for this entry) and is initially repulsed by him (because of what had happened to him. After a few days, she learns to love good guy (because he is... a good guy). She makes good guy promise to be with her despite not knowing her past.

In another scene, bad guy's would-be wife is arguing with her brother. She refuses to marry bad guy now because she feels he doesn't love her anymore (because of the boinking incident with Bugan). Her brother screams at her --- the 'honor' of the family will be lost if he doesn't marry bad guy. Bad guy's would-be wife scathingly says that her honor is still intact and that the only honor he was trying to protect was his own. For someone so small (most of the cast are teeny-tiny), that woman can really intimidate you. She is practically dripping with dury with her brother and his so-called 'honor.'

Things turn really bad. Bugan's brother forces the truth out of the servant girl. A man from the nearby tribe has forced himself on Bugan. Angered by the loss of 'honor,' Bugan's brother takes a group of men to wage war on the village.

Meanwhile, good guy gets a visit from his brother --- bag guy! (-gasp-) When good guy introduces bad guy to Bugan, they are all shocked. Bugan tells good guy that he (bad guy) was the reason for her nightmares. Bad guy tells good guy that she forced herself on him and that she no longer has honor. Good guy feels betrayed and decided to break her promise to Bugan. The servant girl appears from nowhere and tells them of the news of the impending war. They all rush to the village.

A big fight scene ensues. Spears are slapped against swords. Bodies are thrown to other bodies. Despite the raging emotions running around, there is remains a sense of musicality to it. Yet, without the 'corny' factor. Bugan joins in the fight and proceeds to defeat her enemies. At the climax, she is poised to slit good guy's throat and is urge by bad guy saying that she has already taken their tribes honor away from them, that she should kill them all. Bugan drops the sword and screams at everyone. She expresses her anger over this stupid honor thing. She declares that she still has dignity and impresses to everyone that she will not let a few men's mind run her life. She leaves them all and lives happy and dignified in the mountains... without any Prince Charming.

It's like a funky Womyn-inspired soap opera with a lot of dancing.

You should watch it.
