Every since my son was born last year I have had a deep curiosity towards my family history. I want to obtain information through legitment sources and not from hearsay. My dad doesnt talk at all about our family history, except for his personal childhood memories in post war Korea. He hasnt told me much about my grandfather, just the basics, and now with the recent passing of my grand mother, I know I wont get anymore information. Are there any organizations that assist on family history. I've had friends check out there family trees when they visited Korea. Is the only way to do research to travel to Korea? It's going to a while since I have a son.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, aka Mormons, are very into geneaology. That might be a good source from over the Internet.

Ask if your dad if your grandfather or your uncles kept a family tree book or anything like that. Otherwise, I don't know of any Korean geneological organizations.

My eldest uncle (on the dad's side) kept our family tree. I don't know how old it is, but my dad said it probably goes back several hundred years and possibly at least a thousand (doubtful). All I know is most of it is in Chinese characters, which isn't surprising I guess.

On my dad's side of the family, I'm the only one who really has an interest in our family history. When my dad goes back to Korea, maybe in a 2 years, I'm going to ask him to photocopy or somehow reproduce that family history book so I can have a copy of it to pass down to my later generations.

I'm sure getting ecent family history is not that hard.
But it's lot easier if you can found out your famuly name's birthplace.

Once you know the family brithplace, you can find out about their origins.
