You can't forget the greatest Miyizaki series of all time:
Future Boy Conan -
http://www.highharbor.net/~daffy/conan.htmlFunny Story about Earthsea: Over 20 years ago, Miyizaki asked Ursula LeGuin if he could adapt Earthsea into an Anime. Ursula LeGuin never heard of this "anime" stuff and she didn't trust that a Japanese person could adapt her story so she told him no. Miyizaki then went and made Nausica and Laputa. He asks LeGuin again if he can adapt Earthsea, and again she said no. Then Miyizaki made Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Finally, Ursula LeGuin allows Miyizaki to make an adaption. After Miyizaki made the adaption, LeGuin saw a preview and said that she was disappointed with it.
Moral of the story: Ursula LeGuin is a major b!tch. Plus, her book sucks compared to Laputa.
Finally, there's someone else here who appreciates Future Boy Conan! Despite its age (it was produced way back in 1978), this is one of the best Miyazaki anime I've seen, second only to Laputa: Castle in the Sky in my opinion.
Hayao Miyazaki didn't actually make the adaptation for Earthsea, but it was his son Goro Miyazaki who directed it. What Ursula LeGuin was dissapointed about was that his son directed the Earthsea anime instead of Hayao Miyazaki himself. I haven't read the books, but I really enjoyed the Sci-Fi Channel adaptation of Earthsea, although that and the anime adaptation of Earthsea both pale in comparison to Laputa: Castle in the Sky.
I never really liked Spirited Away all that much though... I thought Miyazaki's earlier works, like Future Boy Conan, Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Princess Mononoke, were superior in my opinion.
