Full Version: Why Indonesia is getting richer and wealthier faster??
Asia Finest Discussion Forum > Asian Culture > Indonesian Chat

I looked up on Indonesia's gdp both nominal and ppp and found out that Indonesian economy was actually moving faster than some asean members.
In '98 indonesian gdp per capita was only around US600 but the gdp per capita on 2008 surprisingly had reached US 2,142 which is more than tripled compare to ten years ago. really surprising me coz it's not that easy to bring up gdp percapita of a nation with 240 million population in short period of time.
god bless indonesia!! kiss.gif

You have answered your own qn. God has blessed indonesia
DutchEastIndiesMan
^siapa God-nya ??? Kita bukan America where they theoretically have one God. We got heaps of them.
Maybe we should just say Bless Indonesia ?

Sry for the off topic.

@Miguelpinoy
Thx for the info, I didn't even know it as well.
skyisdalimit
^^ you are really not aware of the development of indonesia. Btw in the latest Global Asia Magazine the net worth of indonesia Top 40 wealthiest are US$60 billions while Malaysia is US $ 45 billions and singapore only around 20-23 billions. Hence, it puts indonesia as the first in South east asia while malaysia second and singapore third. The richest in indonesia is Aburizal Bakrie with wealth up to US $9.1 billions. He is also the richest in South east asia.

Hey, as an Indonesian we are obliged to believe in one God only. "Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa", remember? icon_wink.gif

Anyway, Indonesia and the Philippines are at the same ground, we are less developed compared to Singapore, Malaysia, or Thailand, but we are more advanced than Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar. icon_neutral.gif

^One God...The Muslim God ??
For instance skyisdalimit a Buddhist living in Sumatra should believe in the Muslim God, Allah because there is only one God ? What I'm trying to say is that there are lots of Gods in Indonesia since we're culturally diverse, and yes we can believe all of them, we can believe someone's else God and denounce ours or we can believe our own God. I know this is small matter but it just came through my mind that some people might be offended (not me) with phrase. Hey not all of us are tolerant and understanding.

I thought the Buddhist system is based on belief in a Supreme State (of Mind), rather than belief in a Supreme Being. icon_neutral.gif

Any God or god or goddess or gods..not necessarily of a particular religion thus the choice of words, since our republic is def not an Islamic theocracy. Remember even the traditional believers and/or Spiritualist are very much acknowledged in Indonesia under the banner 'Kepercayaan Kepada Tuhan YME'.

ok22 lol...I get it now, I was being really random.... embarassedlaugh.gif
Well I need to learn more about the principles of our country.
Ok here....I got a question, Indonesia only recognize 5 religion, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism and Protestantism (?). Would people who believe other faiths (Shinto, Confucianism etc) find it hard to make ID, driver's license etc cause they don't believe in the 5 recognized religion ?? shouldn't we recognize all beliefs ? biggthumpup.gif

Sry for the off topic...

This is totally OT embarassedlaugh.gif
FYI, Confucianism is recognized in Indonesia and perceived as a "religion". Other faiths, as long as they believe in one supreme God would fall in "Kepercayaan Terhadap Tuhan Yang Maha Esa" category CMIIW.

But I agree with you. It's time for us to embrace a wider point of view on religiosity. Of course we still have to exclude dangerous sects
skyisdalimit
^^ now we are talking about GOD. Btw dutchie, i thought you always refrain yourself from talking about God. If i am not wrong you are doubting His existence. lololol. FYI, we are a secular nation. We recognize the 5 major religions. However, the question is why on earth being a muslim is one of the criterias that any presidential or ministers candidates have to fulfil? In other words, you can't be the president or the ministers if you are non-muslims. why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?why?

this is a religist* policy.

Religist* is the act of discrimination against certain group of people due to the faiths that they believe.

Being a hypocrite is not my nature, but it's surely one of my strategies. All is fair in love and war.

You guys stray too far from original subject of this thread... icon_neutral.gif
Now lets leave God alone shall we...? God already have His hands full with all the problems...

Back to the topic:
I didn't realize that our GDP rose quite fast during these years..... Are we really growing that rich in such a fast pace...? confused.gif
Maybe because I'm still witnessed lot of poverty here in urban areas around Jakarta...
But when I visited Bandung malls like Ciwalk and Paris Van Java.... hmm..., totaly hedonist, wealthy and rich...

The notions of Indonesian youth swarming luxurious upperscales malls is really...., awesome and gaving the picture of bright future of wealthy Indonesians, but also disturbing for me at the same time.... As if Indonesian tends to be more "materialized" and less "social aware" of suffering around them... icon_neutral.gif

Keknya cuma krn ignorant aja, tapi udah pengen banget ngomong alias "overwhelmed". Trus cari kambing ijo. Biasa Bro, banyak yg cuma bisa ngomong tapi pada males ngecek langsung di sumber. "Katanya", "kata si Anu", "kata Om gue", tapi ngga pernah baca sumber aselinya. Orang2 begini yg bikin Indo ngga maju2.

^Criticism cukup keras.....lol....kasian.

Indonesia doesn't need a muslim leadership or god to guide its destiny.

It just needs a strong committed federal government and corruption-free provincial governments to make sure that the rising GDP is being more equitably distributed among the people and regions. And the Indonesians themselves will automatically know how to live richer and wealthier with peace and harmony without any argument about religion or ethnics.

Democracy is the best thing that happened to Indonesia. Hopefully, u can evolve an effective Check and Balance system that is not based on a BIG MAN (orang tuah) system. Don't make the same stupid mistake as Malaysian leaders... biggthumpup.gif

oh well. guru lo gajinya terlalu dikit kali, so probably it's not quite his/her fault either.
anyways, FYI, in the current cabinet 4 ministers are not muslim: Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister for Trade; Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources; Jero Wacik, Minister for Culture and Tourism; and Freddy Numberi, Minister for Marine and Fisheries.
They are not the firsts, either. There were some in the previous cabinet, and among them surely you've heard of Kwik Kian Gie, former Minister for National Development Planning and former Coordinating Minister for Economy. People in their 30s may still remember the likes of LB Moerdani, former Minister of Security and Defense; J. Soedradjad Djiwandono and Adrianus Mooy, former Governors of the Bank of Indonesia; or JB Soemarlin, former Minister of Finance --and this list are far from exhaustive.

Good. Now you're a grown up man. Read a lot and think. You'll find that our constitution ensure anybody can lead this country. Do you know who is ruling of West Kalimantan province, considering its demography?

Don't just listen and blame the books you read or your teachers. They are history by the time you left school. True that facts and idealism are often miles away, but you are given blank paper to write by our constitution. You are the subject, not an object. Write your name in our country's history with golden ink.

Sorry if I am pushing too hard. Being a muslim, I am tired hearing what to do in our democracy by critics (mostly from "secular" westerners) as if we can not think and do by ourselves. Hearing comments from fellow Indonesians saying our democracy limited by religion of the majority makes my blood pressure higher. We are in a normal democratic country, with poor and undereducated people, unfortunately. icon_sad.gif I just hope that our incredible growth will be followed by big supports in social welfare (school for free, modern public infrastructure, good governance, strengthening control by public to government and politician, etc.)

Why won't u say Being a Malaysian? The problem I see with many Malays these days is that they increasingly identify themselves as Muslims first, then Malaysia or Malay. And in a multiracial democracy like Malaysia, this sends a very worrying signal to the non-muslims that religion has taken over the political class.

You won't finid that many Indonesians saying they are muslims first, then Indonesian or whatever ethnic class later. Most of the forummers here are patriotic as Indonesians, nevermind their religious backgrounds.. I would also say most Singaporeans (including the Malays) would say I am Singaporean first.

Malaysian muslims need to get off their high horse about being good and pure muslims. No one is judging them for being good or pure muslims.

^to add some...
all Indonesian president candidates does not have a clear policy....we need to work on that. So popularity wins the election not the policies. I agree with you, jrockerz. There might not be such law prohibiting for a non-Muslim to lead the country but would the people/voters would vote for him ??? Thats the problem. I think thats what Skyisdalimit trying to say...

My Balinese friend told me that Hinduism in Indonesia is monotheistic, believing in a Supreme Being 'Dewata'. I think the words that the tourism ads use for Indonesia "Islands of the gods and godesses" is wrong if you really think about it...

I doubt that would ever happen (referring to building bridges to connect the islands)... Its just too big and the distance between islands too vast... Hell there is no link between the islands of Britain and Ireland either... You get my point...
