I've noticed it a lot in America... I don't know about other places.
Racism is one thing, but then there's the self-hate... the hate against your own kind. For South Asians, the whole "white is right" and desi guys vs. desi girls. Why, though? Inferiority complex?
I've noticed it more strongly expressed online (since people are free to speak their minds behind the comfort of the computer screen==>anonymity) than I have in real life because I don't know too many desis, and the ones I know are sweethearts, for the most part. I have a lot of respect for them and I am proud of my roots, while at the same time, proud to be American.
It's disappointing. Discuss.
Edited because people are so sensitive about this.

Most people are really sweet in real life. Doesn't mean jack. Haha, most of those people that post online are the quiet sweetie pies offline.

nah, it hasn't been much of a problem with the people I know, because I don't know too many desis (or hispanics or blacks or asians). But I'm off to college in august, so I'll see it more?

Self-hate is pointless b/c their views on race tend to be ridiculously contradictory (e.g. "i'm Asian but I dont like those Asian..look at them...ugh")
Yea, uh...way to go with ur opinions there...so insightful....how about I take your f u c k i n g neck and show u the color of ur own skin
Self-hater are too sensitive, so their perspectives and identity get blown in any direction the winds blow them....
My view rules the universe, so nobody can argue against it....

Yeah, but what I want to know is what you think causes the self-hate. I gave examples of what I've seen. I don't hate them as people, I just don't understand why they're so ashamed of themselves.

lol believe me, the internet isn't a good way to gauge desi folk in America. I love samosas, punar misar, the garbas, the weddings, diwali, raksha bundan, the family get-togethers, going to mandir, the conservative yet warm atmostspheres, etc. If anything, Indian Americans love being Indian Americans.

Think of it like this, if you've been getting your @$$ kicked for over a thousand years by light skinned invaders and have been brainwashed by eurocentric stereotypes that reinforce white hegemony over darker people, wouldn't you be whitewashed? That's essentially what's happened to India albeit on a much larger scale in the north. Ever been to Delhi? If you're white, indians will basically do all but lick your boots. This isn't that surprising though since our prime minister Nehru himself was a closet British boot licker. He set a nice precedent for the rest to follow.
