SENTUL, INDONESIA - The Philippines Matteo Guidicelli made a big impression as he captured the runner-up Asian karting crown at the culmination of the 2004 Asian Zone Open karting championship at the Sentul Circuit
The 14 year old Guicidelli backed up by Addict Mobile Prepaid, Penshoppe, and Swatch had some rough sail during the weekend yet gave a strong fight in the premiere Junior-Intercontinental -A class to emerge overall runner up to 2004 Asian karting champion Calvin Wongwengman of Malaysia
Guicidelli lost the crown to Wongwengman by just two points because of the drop-one race system, He also best Filipino podium finisher that weekend since another top Filipino bet Michelle Bumgarner wound up third after spinning out of the race in the final three laps of the Formula open class.

Maico Buncio [Motor Racer]

article:

Meet Maico Greg T. Buncio, a freshman at the University of Santo Tomas taking up Bachelor of Science in Commerce, Major in Entrepreneurship. An honor student since his elementary days, Maico prioritizes his studies more than his racing career. Thus, while his racing competitors are out on the track practicing during weekdays and qualifying during Saturdays, Maico only comes to the races on Sundays during Race Day, content to start at the back of the grid. However, his lack of familiarization of the race track and the grid does not hinder Maico from winning and breaking track records. Other racers could only scratch their heads in disbelief when Maico whizzes by.

A Young and Respected Champion

For those who are not familiar with motorcycle racing, Maico is a force to reckon with, having won Junior Motocross races before moving to circuit racing and winning the popular Underbone (100cc to 125cc) races. He was the lone Philippine representative in the 2004 Yamaha ASEAN Cup held at Shah Alam, Malaysia, where he brought home the 4th Overall Title for the country despite being unable to race in qualifying due to a sudden ailment. He felt strong enough to race the next day and, starting from the back of the grid, moved up the race order against riders from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, who had five riders each. In true fashion, Maico gobbled up half of the race field in the early laps only to be kept in the mid-pack by the faltering power of his motorcycle, which he was not able to dial-in when he fell sick. However, Maico gained the respect of the racers as well as the organizers who named him Rookie of the Year.

This year, Maico is making the transition from Underbone racing to the 400cc Superbike class with excellent results. Last September 17, during the Formula 400 San Mig Café Road Race Championship, he beat current 400cc champion and 3-time Superbike winner Aris Padiernos, and if that’s not enough, Maico also broke the lap records in the 3.2-kilometer Batangas Racing Circuit with the fastest lap time of 1 minute 49 seconds in the 400cc Superbike class and 2 minutes 7 seconds in the Underbone classes. This is quite a feat and many of his admirers are hoping that he’ll move up to the 600cc class in the next racing season.

Maico developed his knack for winning when he started riding motorcycles at age three and a half and well before he learned to ride a bicycle. Strongly influenced and coached by his father Gregorio Buncio, an equally successful motocross racer (who named him after a European motorcycle brand), Maico started racing in motocross when he was 8 years old and won several victories, among them the 1996 FBO Motocross Series at TRAKSNIJAK Race Track in Tagaytay City, landing 1st place in the 50cc category for 10 years old and below. In May 26, 2002, 14-year-old Maico represented the country in the FMF Memorial Day Motocross Races at Perris, California U.S.A. and promptly won 1st place in the Mini Class 85cc category for 14 years old and below.

A Model Son, Brother and Teenager

Despite his successes in motorcycle racing and the admiration of countless fans, Maico remains humble, discipline and family-centered. He loves to cuddle up to grandmother Aquilina, play coy with his parents Yoyong and Mylene, and shower siblings Lourdes, Shara, Jackquelyn and Barney with brotherly affection. Ever the businessman, Maico even engages in selling junk that he gathers himself during his spare time in his fathers bike shop, YRS Motorcycle Modifications.

During the Yamaha Pan ASEAN Tour where Maico rode with this writer for two weeks around Vietnam and another two weeks around the Philippines, Maico acted as the friendly ambassador and jolly teenager, which earned him the admiration and friendship of all the participants and organizers. Good-looking, tall and boyishly charming, Maico is also the object of affection of his female fans yet his racing-derived discipline keeps his teenage testosterone in check while his studies (and his shyness) keep him from accepting showbiz offers.

With his winning ways and his good looks, we see a bright future for this Boy Wonder. Norkis-Yamaha, Shell Advance, Dunlop, Denso, Imarflex and other sponsors have already placed their bets on Maico.

Jens Knuttel: My father, Dieter Knuttel, is a German while my mom, the former Visminda Bayon, hails from Zamboanga City. I have six more siblings: Ubelyn (27), Marc (22), Sven (20), Ninia (11), Bianca (10) and Selena (3). I was born in Heidelberg, but our family migrated here in the Philippines when I was two years old.

Since when have you been passionate with basketball?

I began playing basketball when I was in grade four [I was 10 years old then]. I was part of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s varsity team [from elementary to third year high school]. I used to be a swimmer, but it was my childhood friends who prodded me to give basketball a try since they’re all into it. Some of the tournaments I joined in are the Small Basketeers of the Philippines-Paserelle and the Palarong Pambansa.

Is your being a Tamaraw a choice or destiny?

Many exceptional PBA players came from FEU [like Johnny Abarrientos, Arwind Santos and Glen Capacio, who’s our coach], and so I grew up with the belief that FEU is a “basketball powerhouse”… na lahat ng magagaling ay dito lang nanggagaling.

My coaches at Ateneo, Jinky Pardo and Pete Alfaro, helped me na makapag-try out sa Baby Tamaraws [juniors team of FEUl] on my third year. Going to Manila [to study and be able to play basketball] was the toughest decision I made as I had to repeat my junior year to qualify for [residency requirement] the UAAP juniors division. But it was worth it, I was able to play [under the guidance of coach Potit de Vera). This paved the way for me to be included in the Tamaraws team when I stepped into college. My being a Tamaraw’s more of a dream that really came true (he smiles).

What were the challenges you hurdled when you stayed here in Manila?

I missed my family in Zamboanga so much, I don’t have any relative here in Manila; balancing basketball and studies—it wasn’t like in high school where classes go before practice/games; and learning how to speak Tagalog fluently. I only used to speak German and Chavacano. There were times when my classmates would laugh at how I pronounced some words, like ki-ni-ki-lig (he smiled).

(Chinito/Black/Mestizo/Moreno)

Your strength on court?

I’m not a scorer, but I’m a “playmaker,” I’m there to lead my other teammates.

Who are your buddies among your teammates?

JR Cawaling—he treats me like his younger brother. [He’s from Cagayan de Oro City and nagbi-Bisayaan din kami sometimes.] I’m also close to Marnel Baracael and Benedict Fernandez. Ang dami nilang tawag sa akin: bunso, puti, tisoy, Kano (he giggles).

Any common notion about players that you want to be changed?

That we’re mayabang, suplado or bolero… others do it kasi, but I don’t. It hurts when people judge you, so I just do the opposite. I am very accommodating [to all our fans], friendly and understanding. In fact, I don’t know how to get angry (he smiles).

Who are your role models?

Olsen Racela (San Miguel), Jonas Villanueva (Magnolia) and NBA player Jason Kidd

Your guiding principle in life is…

“Die hard trying.” Dapat magsipag ka, always strive hard to improve on your craft.

“Taken” or still available?

I’m not into a relationship right now… heartaches [will just] make me cry.

And your message to fellow students?

Balancing extra-curricular activities with academics is a challenge that we face every day, [but] it’s just a matter of knowing what to prioritize [without doing a major sacrifice]. Always scan your notes before you sleep at night, so that when you wake up the next day, you don’t have to review your lessons that hard—you just have to refresh your mind.

Asian Karting queen Michele Bumgarner made history in the Rock Island Grand Prix in Illinois by becoming the first female champion in the world’s largest street kart racing event.
Bumgarner bagged the Tag Seniors crown, also earning her the distinction as the seventh foreign-born winner in the event’s 14-year history.
With the victory, the media is now making comparison of her to Danica Patrick, who also emerged the first female champion of Rock Island’s counterpart, the Indy Racing League, last April.
The 19 year old bet surprised everyone as a first-timer in the event when she piloted the Margay Team to a 1-2-3-4 finish and clocked 11 minutes and 24.144sec.
Teammate Kyle Erdmann came in 0.916sec behind for second place, while Scott Hamble and Brett Johnson finished third and fourth places, respectively.
For years, the Rock Island Grand Prix has been known as a stepping stone to barge into the Indy Racing League (IRL) and has drawn hundreds of entries annually from all over the world, including Argentina, Bermuda, Colombia, Costa Rica, England, France, Italy and Mexico as well as Canada and the United States.
“This will stick with me my whole career. Everyone goes on about how great this race is and it’s special that this is my first time here and my first win here. I hope to come back,” said Bumgarner, who credited the support of Margay’s experienced crew that includes crew chief and former RIGP champ Rick Fulks and RIGP’s winningest racer until last year Jason Birdsell.
Bumgarner is also backed up by Petron XCS, Spectrum-OSO Asia, Department of Tourism, Molecule, City Kart Racing, Oakley and Goodyear.
“I’ve got fantastic support here,” Bumgarner said. “How could I not be up front?”
Even RIGP officials were impressed, predicting a promising racing career for Bumgarner who’s planning to move to Indianapolis to pursue hopes of going the Indy Racing League route by the end of the year.
“I think she has a pretty bright career ahead of her, and it depends on how that career goes,” RI Grand Prix president Roger Ruthhart said. “It served us well when Scott Speed went on to Formula One, with him saying how he had been a Rock Island Grand Prix champion. It could be the same thing with Michele.”
Bumgarner didn’t come to Rock Island with expectations to win. But the media already speculated her historic feat after posting a top qualifying speed of 33.096 seconds that made her the first female pole-winner in RIGP history.
“I didn’t come here intending to be a trailblazer, but it’s an extra perk,” she said. “What I know is, it was going to be a close
race to the end.”
