I believe delay grief, cultural shock and etc have nothing to do with the sudden death...

there have been lots of incident involving some Hmong elders or adults dying in their sleep; many of whom stop practicing their ancestor practices. the elders have always said, you must follow the steps of your ancestors rituals or else sickness and death rise upon your family and you unless your elders or parents told you that you can stop practicing... though they will suffer superstitious consequences...

Seem like this inspires the movie Freddy Cougar. LOL scary...

to this day, the sudden death syndrome is still unsolved or even explained.

Amara
It is currently believed that Sudden Unexplained Death Syndrome (SUDS) is a form of Brugada Syndrome, a genetic disease.

I don't think it's a genetic disease. lol

It happened during the time when many Hmong didn't know if they were to continue practicing their traditional practices or become christian. Majority of these Hmong men who died in their sleep were mostly Christian and new faith people. My uncle who is a very old medicine man died of this after he threw out his ancestral altar. His death, many Hmong just don't talk about.. but everyone knew even my dad and mom.

This is very strange. I think it does have to do with discontinuing rituals and the consequences that follow, since they said there were no signs of death. If it had been from stress, then death might have came in the form of a heart attack and the coroner would know this.

Yes, healthy Hmong men died of a mysterious cause. Creepy.

You should read up on medical journals about this disease and not just take the words of people, especially those with no western formal education as cold hard facts.

Western perspective is not always right or accurate. Just think about it, first they said Coffee is bad for you and now they're coming out with new discoveries that coffee lower this and that??????????

What about dream? Why do we dream? Oh yeah, it must be something that triggers our brain... what about Ghost? oh wait, there is no such thing as ghost but magnetic field... okay.... enough about Western formal education.

Not all western formal education are cold hard facts. In facts, I rather believe in words of wise people.

Hmong people will never progress if they attribute everything to the supernatural and the unseen. This way of thinking disgusts me. It reminds me of all my stupid relatives telling my mother the lump in her breast was dab neeb los thawj nws xwb and that she should become a shaman so that the dab neeb would not tsim txom her anymore-- well, she did what the relatives wanted and died of breast cancer 6 months later. This is the Hmong perspective on everything. I'd rather have my limbs cut off than to believe my sickness is the doings of little angry dab neeb, spirits, ghosts and whatnot.

^Since Hmong culture is really "spiritually sensitive," especially towards death I wouldn't be surprise if a lot of these people died simply because ancestors missed them so much and needed their help back home--->through the other side I mean.

It's called Sudden Death Syndrome because no one has any idea what it is.

Are you referring to me or original poster? I know what SDS is, just like I know what SIDS are too. Sometimes the solutions or answers that we seek doesn't always have a physical explanation you know.
chymali
Oh no. I'm just referring to anyone in particular.

Usually, the nature of the syndrome is listed in the syndrome. If it's Sudden Death Syndrome, it means obviously they don't really know what it is.

I like you Amara. At least you did some research. It also says it can be acquired or inherited.

SDS, can you wake up dead?

I've heard stories of sudden death syndrome from my parents. One telling of it can be from the elders like shamans. It could only be a spiritual phenomena.

The video is the best guess. The person in the video said something about having a dream so intense it can cause sudden failure in the human body. I am petrified to hear such thing.
xeemlauj
lol.

I had a cousin who died suddenly. He was only 9 years old. His mother put in to bed. Went to wake him up to go to school and he was dead. icon_sad.gif Sudden death..?? I didn't hear the rest of it because I was away and by the time I did hear about it nobody wanted to talk about it anymore (or never heard anything more)...

Sudden Death Syndrome in the Hmong population.. never resolved. Some infants die suddenly also.. however I think that is also a different situation, but can be related (haven't researched it).

It could be genetic, but then it didn't continue on with the children.

The brain is a mysterious thing. I would assume that it was caused by stress and of course something an individual might find believable as in being taken away by a soul or losing a soul.

Population1, I think you have a point :P sometimes I wake up heart pounding drenched in sweat from night terror. So, things that happen in dreams can affect one's body.
mndeg
sudden infant death syndrome is pretty much an excuse they give when babies die from vaccinations given to them.
lilasiankid
I hope I get it one day.

It's just too bad I was put here for a purpose. My fate is, I'm gonna change the world man. I can feel it coming in the air tonight...And I've been waiting for this moment, all my life.....Oh lord, oh lord.

Even if the syndrome is an inherited genetic disease, it does not necessarily mean that someone from every generation will get it. Genetic diseases can lay dormant for countless generations before surfacing again.

Speaking of souls, I had a rather scary dream a few nights ago. In it, my soul was taken from me by the spirit of my dead sister. It felt so real-- I could feel my soul leaving my body and then instantly waking up in my room drenched in sweat. Creepy...
