[color="#666666"] S'pore, Indonesia continue efforts to develop SEZs in Riau islands

SINGAPORE : Ministers from Singapore and Indonesia met in Singapore on Friday for the 6th Joint Steering Committee meeting on economic cooperation in the Riau islands of Batam, Bintan and Karimun.

It was part of a series of regular meetings under a 2006 framework agreement to develop special economic zones (SEZs) in the Indonesian islands, said the Trade and Industry Ministry in a statement.

In the area of capability development, the committee agreed to conduct more training courses for Indonesia's Special Economic Zone officials, following the completion of a second phase of training.

The second phase, which was conducted in November 2007 for two weeks at the Civil Service College, covered Singapore's experience in the areas of customs, taxation, immigration and urban planning.

The committee was also informed that Batam Polytechnic instructors and course managers had been trained by Singapore's Institute of Technical Education on how to conduct a Mechatronics course. The polytechnic began an eight-month part-time course in April 2008.

Singapore and Indonesia recently also completed a joint investment promotional trip to Japan in July to promote the special economic zones to Japanese investors.

Both sides pledged to keep up the momentum in implementing further improvements to make the zones internationally competitive and attractive for investments.

The Indonesian delegation comprised newly-appointed Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sri Mulyani, who concurrently holds the portfolio of Minister of Finance.

She was accompanied by the Minister of Trade, Chairman of Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board, Governor of Riau Islands province and Secretary General for Ministry of National Education.

The Singapore delegation was represented by the Minister for Trade and Industry, Minister for Finance, Minister for Education, Acting Minister for Manpower, and Chairman of the Economic Development Board. - CNA /ls

btw
bali and batam is overrated, international investor need to try somewhere else.

but it's important that Riau is developed as an outlet for industrialization for Indonesia, why do u want international investors to try elsewhere???

it's true thought that the political will by Jakarta to have Riau developed industrially is not as strong as it should be... in fact there's rampant corruption and incompetence in Batam by the prevailing authorities. My uncle (not ricochet) works for a Japanese firm in Batam and said that he's trying to instil the work ethics of Singaporeans to the Indonesians in his factory, but somehow, because the local government doesn't make it socially conducive for these workers to live, it's hard for the work ethos to change. Meaning, any form of industrialization doesn't just come from giving the workers a better job, the government must provide better and affordable housing, sanitary, social interaction and education infrastructure for the worker's family health and growth. The Batam government only seems to encourage vice like drugs, pros, etc.. to bloom because that way, they can extort and run the syndicates rackets ... icon_sad.gif

I think if Riau being neglected and not being developed properly (despite the regional strategic position), Riau people were more unsatisfy with central govt, thus demanding more power to manage themself (province govt) by means of autonomy or even independence. icon_neutral.gif
Does Papua and Aceh rang a bell...., native people of the province demands better chance in economy.

i didn't know there was a threat of independence from Jakarta in the Riau!!! eek.gif interesting.. on what basis? they don't have any links with the javanese??

The threat of Riau independence is not a popular movement and as severe as those happened in Aceh and Papua....
Most of Riau people still shared strong identity as Indonesian.
The discontent was economic based, you know.... pressing the central govt for more autonomy in economic sector, to manage their own resources, regional affair, rather than Jakarta meddling in their business... and it has been granted by central goverment with present autonomous programme.
Since then, we almost never heard any of this "independence" threat.... icon_neutral.gif

So why don't we jointly set up the best technical universities and research labs on Batam and attract the best and brightest to the island to complement the industrial development there? I think currently the best unis are in Bandung right? That's kinda far from the industry, and if u look at developed countries like the US and Germany, their unis work closely with the R&D of leading industries. This is what we are doing in SG, but I think the same can be done for indonesia,,,

Yeah, Riau one of region that given autonomous by the Indonesia govt. That very clever I think. We did not need "Aceh scenario" anymore and I quite sure discontent in Riau also will hurt Malaysia and Singapore..... biggthumpup.gif

And I think that university should fully fund by Singapore Govt. biggthumpup.gif

I think your idea was great. But technical universities with it's own research labs was not good la. It very hard and not good investment. Furthermore all leading industries was either belong to western countries or Japanese.
tangawizi
I don't think they would have a problem funding the building of such university, but the collaboration between foreign MNCs and SG government has to be supported. If Indonesian govt wants to be part of the collaboration, then it would be good if they also put in the equity needed as equal partners, right?
