I went blueberry picking today with a good friend of the family who is caucasian. We went to her in-law's farm, where four generations of the family resides. (90 year old great-grandpa, grandpa, son/daughter, grandson/granddaughter)

I had fun, so on. I went home. But later on in the day, she came by to apologize because apparently, the great-grandpa had made some rude remarks about Chinese people (I am Chinese).

The grandpa was extremely mad at his father, who was making a lot of racist remarks. I didn't hear them, as I was playing with some little kids in the backyard. She told me, "Oh, you know he's old, and I guess older people are more racist."

The fact he was racist is kind of offending, but what got to me more, was the fact that his racism could be because of his age. Does anyone care to disagree or agree with the comment?

Older people are more prone to racism than other people?

Well either way I think that definitely grew up in a time where it was much more socially exceptable to be racist and say racist things. It does seem like they are more prone to say things like that though, however wrong it may be. Luckily for me all of my older relatives are not racist nor do they say racist things. My grandparents on my mothers side actually were quite involved in the civil rights movement back in the day as young college students.

Are old people racist? No. Old white people are often racist.

Oh but it goes all ways... older people of any race tend to be have more racist tendencies... old black people because of the things they went through, old irish people racist against the polish, and on and on. If you really think it has to do with only white people you are clearly ignorant of many things. Go ask an older asian person what they think of black people...

I asked all of them in my family and they think they are all poor oppressed people who were just not given a chance.

I've spent my whole life around black people and I know they are some of the most hateful, bigoted people on the planet.

The only old Asian who hates blacks is someone who has probably lived long enough to be insulted or attacked many times by blacks.

That is why I wonder how older people feel about other races. For instance, my grandparents feel caucasians are weird, but they don't hate them. They just don't know them well enough.

But this guy was truly racist. He truly hated Asians. So I don't know... yhellothar has a point when s/he says older caucasian people are more racist than others.

I know not all of them are, but it seems to me that that is the most reasonable, especially in places in Canada and America where immigration built the country.

older people seem to be more racist because they openly say things which is racist. that is known as old fashioned racist. people thesedays are more prone to be subtlely racist not being so overt with such comments.


all in all, everyone is just as racist but it has manifested itself to being more low key or passed as sly.

I think many older people tend to live in a sense in the world as it existed when they were young, up to until perhaps they were aged forty or so.

After that age change becomes more difficult for people. So the rapid change in demographics in the modern world is often more difficult for them to adjust to.

Younger people grow up in the world as it is just now and so accept the current demographics as the norm.

So its easy to say old people are racist, but what may be more accurate is to say that the rapid change in ethnicities that take place in the modern world are much more difficult for them to adjust to.

But here's another question:

How is it that 60 year olds are more adaptable than say 90 year olds? For instance, a lot of teachers in my school are nearing that 60 year old point. That's only a 30 year difference from 90 year olds, and but I tend to find that 60 and under, they're not as racist.

Dunno, maybe brain changes that will happen to all of us as we age.

Yea that's the odd part... lmao... I have no clue how that happened to be honest. My grandma (my grandfather has passed away) wouldn't mind if I dated a black man as long as he was a nice guy. I think maybe my mother has just been influenced by the wrong types of people through her life.

I have no clue... my mom has issues though so I'm willing to bet it's just because she is ignorant. My dad I believe has just only been exposed to certain types of black people here thus having had a negative influence over his perceptions.

What's weird is that you would think it would have... but I think between growing up having only myself to rely on most the time anyways and being that I went to an extremely diverse school is why I resisted their beliefs on things such as that.

It's hardly rare for children to latch onto their parents line on thought nor is it rare for them to go against the grain so it could have gone either way.

Hi, I am a black American . I hear you folks talk about being done wrong by black people. You go back and fourth with "I don't hate black folks, I just think their ugly, loud, and uncouth etc. If I felt like you fools, I'd be dropping Asians everywhere I see them, but I'm not, because I'm not ignorant you people are. If anything came close to that it was with my comment about my father, and if that was what this was in reference to then you really need to read the entire thread before jumping in and making such statements. Of coarse I'm not going to say that there aren't any racist remarks made throughout the forum, because there are. Never did I say that I shared these beliefs but I do think that the black population in my particular town I live in has had a negative impact on my father's feelings towards the race. I'm not using it as an excuse for him, so don't go assuming that I am. And by the way if this was in reference to me... I'm not asian.

He comes from a time and generation when North American caucasian's(English, Irish, Scottish etc...) looked down not only on us Asians but also European immigrants(Polish, Ukraine etc...).

Doesn't matter what, Americans of Irish, English, Scottish descent all come from the same lines and the lines of their ancestors who invade other lands and take, to this day a good example is the U.S.A. remember the United States of America was once a British colony until they decided to seperate and cause a civil war.

So this is why U.S.A has been invadeing Iraq and middle East lands, their reason is to combat terrorism.

Music videos also have lots of black guys with all kinds of women, Blacks are docotrs, lawyers, judges or atleast portrayed in every role imaginable in the media. Being poor and black doesn't justify racism, but you should understand that when you talk about a "poor" group of anything you're bound to eventually find at least a few instances of adjectives like "ignorant" and "racist" not that far behind. If you don't believe me, ask some poor Asians what they think of black folks and see if something ignorant or racist doesn't come out at some point...or some poor white American folks what they think of Asians...or some poor Latin Americans what they think of gringos...

Uh, no, it's the other way around. Older white people are as racist as the average non-white. From these two groups it is simply much more accepted.

I tend to agree that alot of the older generation seems to be racist. Societies in general was pretty racist back then.

Unfortunately there are still many young people who are racist. Not as many as those of the older generation though.
