If you haven't heard, Phnom Penh is booming. By 2020, the city and the living standards of the people will be comparable to other Southeast Asian countries. Right now, there's around two million people. The population of the city proper is expected to double.

Scape (the skyline will change dramatically in a few years, the tallest building at the time of completion at over 700ft will be completed by 2011)

Traffic (elephants, yikes) One good thing is that the cars stay on the street.

Anyone care to post some more pictures?

Father wants me to go again in a month or two, I'll take pictures then biggrin.gif.

Nice pictures...

I was only there a couple of months ago. Boy it was hot, but I didn't care. Love the city and back country. Missed already. Now I want to go back. Maybe next year, that is if my boss won't give me a hard time about it. All I need is a 2 weeks approval off. The irony is, is that I have the authority to approve my co-workers that works for me, but can't approve my needs off.

they really need to fix traffic there. cars are all over the road.
mushrooms
I think they need to really work on public transportation, like more buses and trolleys (and that sky train may not be a bad idea after all). Look at all those motos and all those ppl on the vans, it would help out everyone so much. It's so crowded now there. I'm afraid the skyline that is going up will start to smog up just like Beijing over the next decade.
hoang_1989
there ain't many pics of Cambodia Today on the inernet. please show more.
applepannic
If that sjy train is going up, they better make it less than a dollar a ride. Those developers are fu-king mad, most people make two dollars a day. The ride needs to be like twelve cents (around 500 riel).

Nice pictures the best. biggthumpup.gif I love Independence Monument, especially when it's lit at night with all these bright colors. So simple in design but yet it reflects Angkorean architecture nicely. One of my favorite design my Vann Molyvann.

^In front of the US embassy, my dad was telling me how grand the building was when he visited Phnom Penh last year. Not only that, the building is next to Phnom Penh's greatest landmark, Wat Phnom. Anyways, I see OCIC tower in the center of the photo but can anyone tell me what the other building is to the right of the OCIC tower in the far background. It's also wrapped in the green construction mesh. I think it's near the riverside.
applepannic
I was wondering what the other building was too. Judging by the wide base, it must be one of the bigger skyscrapers.

What is it going to look like when completed?
Itsm3Yoshi
Wow! Srok Khmer improved so much judging by the picture with the OCIC tower in center. Just looking at the surrounding area it almost looks like 1st world country. Damm in only three years I was there back in 2005. I"m so happy to see my native country improving. Now in few more years it dramatically change even more with Gold tower and IFC 52 to be completed.

Haha. It fits the "boring communist architecture" mold indeed.

I can't remember the last time I've been to Cambodia but my wife was there last year and she says Cambodia is developing fast. She said roads from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap usually takes about half a day, but now it takes about 4 hours.
applepannic
That's kind of hard for me to believe since roads from south Jersey to Massachusetts takes around five hours and their distance is about the same.
Swa_King_80
Have you seen the way taxi driver drives in Cambodia? They don't like to slow down or stop at all. Time is money to them, and I have heard of trips from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap in over 3 hours. I wouldn't want to be in a taxi going that fast.
applepannic
They completely ignore the dangers or traffic. Tssk tssk tssk, thats why it would be nice to have a sky train.

IFC international, when completed in 2011 or early 2012, the main building will be the highest in Phnom Penh. Its 52 stories or 53 depending on the source and will reach a height of at least 700ft. There are six other buildings that will reach higher than 30 stories.
