Divide and conquer? The US woes in Iraq was due to the division of Sunni and Shi'a after the fall of Saddam. If the government that is made post-Saddam (the American lead coalition government with Kurds, Shi'a, and Sunnis) pulled together, they'd have easier time there. The problem is the catalystic fall of a strong dictator who once policed all ethnicities, separatists elements e.g. al-Sadr's militia, Sunni Arabs from outside Iraq who kill Shi'a (like Zarqawi) have their own plans now. In fact people like Zarqawi's plan was to incite violence to creat civil war so that Americans cannot achieve their goals.

Another view of 'division' in Baghdad, there is also this show: Boys from Baghdad High, (I watched in on HBO, surprisingly good) Arabs (and Kurds) boys, who grow up in Baghdad with their own opinions (and their parents and friends). There's a quote from Hayder's mother when she was asked how she feel about the American occupation was fair.

The US is planning to get out as soon as Iraq can get its act together. The American public demands it and the soldiers are expecting it.

Why would you wish ill will on the Iraqis when the US pulls out?

I don't wish ill will, it has nothing to do with that. The war was over along time ago, but now there is a civil war on the brink of happening between the Sunni's(Iraq's) and the Shiq(Iraqi's), the reason why the U.S.A troops are still there is because of this they do not want to lose face, but nothing is being solved and the U.S.A are loseing alot of money with troops still over there.

You made a good point with your 1st sentence, but how long is it gonna take for the U.S troops to help Iraq get their act together you say?

I say never, and i'm willing to bet my left nut with ya.

Umm are you talking about the Philippines?

Divide et Impera worked in the Philippines for a LONG time. it's why Spain didn't leave until the Americans came. :S Because Ilocanos, Tagalogs and Visayans could never work together.

Proves how much how horrible Iraq is getting rather than getting better as what McCain and Bush keep telling us.

The American public wants the troops home, the soldiers don't wanna be there, and the US leaders don't like the dollars being spent there. Being that it's an election year, the chances of troop reduction or withdrawal should be set by the time a new US president is in place.
The Iraqis ironically, don't want the US troops to leave because they rely on them to stabilize the region.

With all those factors, i'm guessing that the troops will leave. It happens all over the world whenever a region that the US occupies start to show levels of normalcy or when signs of US public anger becomes too overwhelming.
It happened during the Vietnam war, Beirut, Somalia, Grenada, just to name a few.
