I doubt it. The Hmongs in Laos is less than 500,000. I don't think they really counted the ethnic Lao population. I would say the ethnic Lao population is somewhere around 75-80 %.

Sounds suspicious, but they claim it is a census.

It depends on the sources. Some, like wikipedia and others, put the number of Lao ethnic at 67%, Hmong + Yao at 9%, and others. I think about 2/3 of the population of Laos being of ethnic Lao is realistic.

CIA factbook probably got their source from Lao National static center, which is more accurate than other source, maybe.

well they would've done their research as they are a govt organisation, their method of quantitative research is probably what needs to be examined

I grew up in Viengchan, and only 5 Viet out of 2000 students, and the rest were Lao. 5 years before 2005 was 68% and suddenly dropped down to 55%, that was more like a big exodus.

It's more complex when you talk about Thai in comparison with Viet/Chinese in Laos. It depends on how you define "Thai" in Laos (or how you define "Lao" in Thailand for that matter), and the number can vary a lot.

Does this census include other Tai speaking mountain tribes as well as Lao ?
Buddhalove
Aug 13 2008, 08:09 AM
likely not, 55% probably just Lao only, not including other Tai speaking people like Black, Red, White, or Tai Nua etc. I think those group been asked to identify themselves and preferring name.

It is hard to believe that Laos only make up 55% of the whole population. If this is true, Laos could end up being like the U.S where experts predict white population will be less than all minority combine in the next 20 years.

Laos is pretty diverse, but less intense compared to Burma and many other African countries.
