I agree with you, Japanes love khmers. Both countries had long history together during WWII. We were helping Japanese soldiers to escape from killing by french soldiers. One of Japanese generals, still alive till today and he went back to Cambodia to recall his memory and helped build a bridge in one village. Japanese goverment give billion dollar to help cambodia and not asking for anything back.
When I was studying in Japan, I was very curious about a pumpkin called Kambujak, and I asked my Cambodian friends who are living in Japan, the meanings behind it. He told me that the Japanese soldiers brought the seeds back from south-east asia. Well, during their desperate times and when WW II was coming to an end, Khmer people were helping the Japanese to stay alive by feeding them all kinds of food stuffs. What they really fond of is the la-pao (pumkin).
What they grow in Japan, is the sweet kind that also grew in Cambodia. Actually, I do not see any other kinds that grow there. No American, Halloween types that grow in the USA.
