I don't think a lot of Lao here will know what Khamu is because most are Southern Lao, but I am North so I know and met lots of Khamu before. I think Khamu and Lao people is like a "blur" line between us because unlike Hmong or Mien, Khamu and Lao been around together longest. I can usually tell if someone is Khamu though, by the way they speak Lao to me. laugh.gif

Unfortunately, I never hear Khamu speak their own language. I think majority only speak Lao now. thumbsdown.gif When I go to temples on New Years and sometimes see Khamu families, most of them (especially kids) just say they are Lao and not Khamu. I think that can be very confusing though because everyone should not forget their heritage.

Our brothers. The original inhabitants of northern laos and the second largest ethnic group of Laos(ethnic Lao are the largest).

They are some pretty chill folks and rep Laos hard.

Actually there is a blur line between MIEN and HMONG.
We've been living together for century from CHINA, VIETNAM, LAOS, THAILAND and now the United States.

But there is different between MIEN and HMONG.

Mien - originally from Guangxi (home to 15million Zhuang). This explains why the Mien (Yao) in China wear clothing similar to Zhuang and sometimes Miao. - Mien and Zhuang have been exempt from paying taxes to the Chinese Emperor. The Mien worship PAN GU - a deity that found among the MIEn and HMONg. The Hmong from the EAST - HUNAN PROVINCE worship PAN GU.

Hmong - originally from the Yellow River. Fled South and mixed with the Southern Tribes. Influenced the Dong and Bouyei in Guizhou. Guizhou i 90% of Guizhou are Miao. Dong and Bouyei are Tai People. They live perfectly fine with the Miao in Guizhou Province.

The HMONG and DZAO(Mien) in Vietnam live peacefully among one another. Many Mien elders today speak HMONG.

How similar/different are Hmong and Mien languages? Can you understand something when someone speaks Mien?

Actually, I was not answering your question at all. Talktohand.gif THIS IS REFERENCE TO SIGNIFICANCE OF KHAMU & LAO of Southeast Asia, not our pinongs now part of China! This is to help original poster, not you ethnic craze Hmong guy like you. I guess your lonely for not being included. laugh.gif You already have your own Chat, but not Mien, Khamu, or other ethnics in Laos, so bringing up factual Hmong history, etc....is not really necessary in here.

I think a lot of ethnic Lao is more interested in other ethnics (besides just Hmong), especially since they need to have a voice and share us some knowledge of there people too. If I want to know more or talk with Hmong more, I go to your Chat.

I assume you're referring to the name 'Souriya', correct?

If so, the translation of the name is 'Sun'.

hmm.. I wonder if 'Souriya' is another one of those loan words from the Indians laugh.gif since now I know Khmers also use this name. xD
Buddhalove
I was referring to Hmong and Mien languages as to the moon and the sun.

Oh my fault xD. Irony hahaha.

On that note, I have heard both of these languages and once you hear it several times you can definitely tell them apart. But speaking on appearance, sometimes to the untrained eye you can easily mistake either ethnicity as being the other.
Buddhalove
To tell you the true before i didn't even know what are Khmu and Mien.

I've heard Khmu on youtube, but I don't hear it as Khmer. It sounds more like Lao to me.

Yes, its from Indian. In Sanskrit, its Suriya. In old Khmer, its Surya. In Thai, its Suriya. In modern Khmer, its Sorya.

For some reason I don't think its all that similar to Khmer. They use a lot of sounds that Khmers wouldn't normally use.
