Full Version: Sick Indian Food

Sorry for the misleading sounding title, lol, I actually wanted to know what do Indians cook to eat when they are having the fever, flu, cough or upset stomach. Anything. Like for me, when I have the fever, my mom just boils rice in water to make a watery porridge and we eat really bland food with it which must not contain OIL, SPICE, TOO much salt etc. Basically, baby food. icon_smile.gif

If some of you follow the western way or lots of fluids, medicines and CHICKEN SOUP. Then it's fine. icon_smile.gif Just wanna know if there's any custom home made Indian way to eating when ill.

Because I am genuinely curious? And I can't ask this in a Thai, Filipino, Chinese chat to ask about what Indians eat when they are sick right?

Indian food are spices? Are you trying to say that Indian cuisine is tumeric powder and chili powder? embarassedlaugh.gif

What kind of curry and what part of India was it from? White people say "curry" like its one thing. Curry is any dish cooked in spices.
punjabtrini
It depends!
Certain foods have different qualities based on Ayurvedic principles. JuicyFruit noted tumeric and such.
Split peans, onions, garlic and varius dhals have some efficacy along with the well known Triphala!

i think yhellothar was referring to the kiwi above him instead of the OP.

oh brook in india people from different regions eat different kinds of foods. different regions will have their own style of cooking, kind of like how different maori tribes may have different dances. indian spciety is still quite tribal, not like new zealand society so each suburb will have their own chieftan and culture/foods.

like in indias north the curry tends to be milder and less spicey.

when u go to indias south the curries are very very hot.

in sri lanka it is very south of india and they eat their food much hotter and spicier than the indians living up north.

so we were just curious what region cuury u have had but dont worry i dont know where my curries come from either, i just know south india= hot and north india = mild.

Xtin, is that Kristin Kreuk in your profile pic? icon_wink.gif

Here's a remedy that I've learned about: Apple-cider Vinegar. I'm not sure if you can find that in Singapore....but it works amazing for anything from headaches, nausea, food poisoning,etc...just take a couple teaspoons of it and you'll be feeling good in a few hrs.

Google the recipe for a south indian dish called "Rasam". It's kind of a soup/gravy that you mix and eat with rice. Incredibly tasty and very effective against a sore throat/flu.

^^ I love well made Rasam, I eat it on it's own icon_smile.gif

In my family we tend to eat mild food when ill. Usually porridge like dishes are encouraged and plenty of liquids. I'm sure it varies from house to house though, often the common factor being a lot of liquid and soft foods are encouraged.

One, but India is very diverse and food/culture varies from region to region.

Huh? The food in Indian restaurants is usually Punjabi food from the north and it's spicy. And I'm not too sure about South Indian being spicier. I've had South food and it was mild.
