What's wrong with Canada? Australia with smaller population is doing well.

5th day into Olympics and still no medals for Canada
Wednesday, August 13, 2008

The Canadian Olympic committee set its sights on 16 medals for the games in Beijing.

But on the fifth day of competition, Canadian athletes are not wearing anything shiny around their necks.

The lack of medals so far has some athletes and sports administrators accusing the government of a lack of funding.

Racial mentality => lack of focus. That's the cause IMHO.

1. We're not a Summer Olympics country.

2. There are still a lot more events, but what really hurt us was Kyle Shewfelt's injury. He was the defending Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics.

3. Canada's athlete's have to deal with so much more than other traditional powerhouse countries. Canadian athletes have to get a day job, as the government will not subsidize (or very minimally subsidizes) Canada's athletes. That's why many athlete's train at night, while they work in the day and afternoon, trying to make a living and putting food on the table for their families.

4. The Canadian Olympic program lacks focus honestly. They seem to value personal bests over anything. They need a more stricter regimen.

5. Scout for talent around the world and pay them to be Canadian citizens, like the US is doing. We can simply fast track their citizenship. It's not a coincidence that Canada got gold in the men's 100 metre and 4x100 metre track and field event in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and guess what? The winners that helped us were Caribbean!

I don't know. There are probably even more reasons which other posters can highlight, but I think these are some of the main points.

Canada is a pretty laid-back country. Congratulations to Vancouver for hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. icon_smile.gif

Oh, this explains all the b!tching from the Canadian Parliament.

If its not hockey or curling we really don't care that much. beerchug.gif

No one is really complaining. It is a topic discussed on sports shows though.
BigBenChow
Well, if the leader of Canada won't even care about the Olympics, why should ordinary canadians care.

Why is this in Chinese chat? It seems like every topic about Canada ends up here for some reason? Is it a reading problem? It's just like how I keep getting reports from people who actually wanted to press "reply". Jesus H. Chraisssss. it's so annoying to have to keep moving topics to appropriate places... thank god I don't mod this section.

In today's Toronto Star, Rosie DiManno talked about how Canadians are too laid back and that our athletes don't have the same hunger for gold that other nations do. It's quite true. "Oh, it's alright, we had fun in Beijing. We got the Olympic experience and we're happy to have participated". Very typical of Canadians. Hooray for adequacy! icon_rolleyes.gif Alexandre Despatie came 5th in synchro springboard diving. I don't know... 5th place is pretty retarded for a guy who's supposed to be like, tha mo'fu-king man. I'm sure if you tabulated all the uncontested 4th place finishes in Olympic history, Canada would have the most.

Lol wow a lot of people here are pretty butt hurt about Stephen Harper not going to the olympics. He's the Conservative PM of Canada. Pay no attention to that guy. He's a loser/robot. I'm pretty sure the only reason he declined to go was because he thought Bush wouldn't go, but since he was the first to say he wasn't going, he couldn't go back on his word. Pretty funny, actually. Can't wait for elections lolll...

EDIT: by the way, people who think Canada 'sucks' and would rather live in america of all places should just leave. there are truckloads of other people waiting in line for the chance to be canadian. now, i'll give you a break because apparently you're from SF. SF and san antonio happen to be the largest canadian cities in america. hahaha.

That's because the people here always like to bash just about anything.
If you encounter something you don't like just post it here and people will follow biggthumpup.gif and I don't know how but even if it's not China related it ends up being China related.

People from China and Portugal and $hit come to Canada on a 2 week "vacation" and then stay here for like 4 years working at some factory lollll

You only visit Canada to see relatives. Any tourist attractions you visit are because you got bored and your relatives wanted to prove to you that there are things to see in Canada, whiich there aren't.

track & field is where canada thrive and hope for medal.

Canada has factories?!?!

Lol, we have 1 medal hopeful in athletics versus around 50 guaranteed medals for the Americans.

We're just not that competitive people I guess. And I'd guess that around 60% of our athletes come from Québec, even if they should only represent around 20%. I don't know why that is...

According to Canadian Media : Canadian Athletes don't get enough funding and have no facilities to train in.

As a Canadian, I think this is slightly indicative of the mediocracy that permiates Canadian society. Many Canadians seem content with letting other nations *cough* the US *cough* bear the weight of R&D development in a number of areas. Canda is fast becoming America's farm.

Canadians and Canada need to push themselves harder. To realize that just because they're girfted with natural resources, that doesn't mean they should sit of the sofa and only be a raw supplier.

The lack of medals should be a wake up call for Canadians - we need to push ourselves.

i know canadas mens gym team has 2 halfies.

I don't know how other countries train, but in terms of the Korean women's archery team (which won gold), it's the type of training that Canada needs in general.

The Korean women's archery team had to shoot the targets while they had snakes being put down their shirts. They had to shoot targets in excessively noisy environments. They had to shoot targets in artificial rain. All to improve their concentration and to enable them not to be distracted.

You know if you try to pull off that kind of training in Canada, the athletes and the Olympics trainers will probably get sued for violating human rights or some insignificant thing like that.

Even Germany has decided that from now on, they are going BACK to the strict training regimen of East Germany, because the lax attitude of the current German Olympics training hasn't translated into enough medals. They're going to go back to the "Soviet" style training where you probably get beaten up and abused when training so that you can win a medal. Well, I'm probably exaggerating on the beating and abuse, but still...the training regimen of East Germany is a way stricter and focuses on medal results more than the current German attitude.

The US can afford to not have a super strict system, because they have the funding and technology to turn their athletes into medal winners. The US have probably the best facilities in the world and they can attract the best trainers due to the budget of the Olympics program in America.

As a Canadian, I fully approve making our Olympics training much more stricter. Something that almost borderlines mental and physical abuse. Achieving "the best Canadian time ever" is not good enough anymore. Canada needs to achieve "world best times".

Of course, that doesn't mean Canada will suddenly vault to the top of the standings, but it does mean Canada won't have to suffer through the first week of having no medals, while smaller countries like Togo and Tajikistan already have medals.

All you anti-Canada people make no sense.

First of all, Canada IS an athletic country. It's just that we aren't as dedicated to the same sports as everyone else in the world is. We're a winter sports country. Which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who knows anything bout the country.

In the Winter 2006 olympics at Torino, CANADA RANKED 3RD IN THE MEDAL COUNT. Only after the United States and Germany.

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/torino2006/medals

Germany won 29 medals. The US won 25. Canada won 24.

I'm Chinese but I grew up in Canada and most of the sports I enjoy like ice skating, skiing and snowboarding are all winter sports. It's simply a feature of the country. It's kinda hard to be enthusiastic about summer sports when 6/12 months of the year is unsuitable for those sports.

This is like accusing Brazil for sucking at hockey.
AmericanEmpire
EMBARASSING for Canada.

When nations like Togo and Zimbabwe have won medals, there is NO EXCUSE for Canada.
ham_let
We were fifth, not third. Still a good achievement, but I hate how Americans and Canadians count medals.
Dim_Sum_4_U
I thought Canada won most of their medals in swimming, rowing, and athletics for the summer. So far, medals in swimming are being taken by America and Australia, and rowing is owned by the U.S, Netherlands, and New Zealand......
iMumble
Ugh. Canada is only good at the Winter Olympics.
ham_let
Lol yay three medals. Now if we can only grab like 10 more?
Mid-Night_Sun
we have 3 lol. a gold, a silver, and a bronze. all in like 1 hour. thats not too bad. as least we arent behind Togo anymore. that was gettin to me.

lol my bad bredrin

we need to win every singe rowing event we qualified :S

its not THAT bad. im watching China vs Germany bball. id rather Canada not even be in an event then perform like that :/

AIR BALLS. i saw AIR BALLS at OLYMPICS level. my HIGH SCHOOL had street ball teams that were better.

I don't see why we should feel bad. Canada is one of the coldest countries in the world. We're a winter sports country. That's all there is to it.
P. Bredahl
not cold enough to not do well enough or have the resources to produce really really good athletes at outdoor games... ANY games

Aye but only 7 golds.
Germany doesn't claim to be solely a winter sports country, they generally do well at the summer olympics and yet they also managed 11 golds and a total of 29 medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics. You can't excuse yourself as a winter sports country if you're not even that good at winter sports, just admit you're $hit and move on.
