(For an example of the real Hanoi accent, in the time before the capital was filled w/ people from the country side and the old Hanoians were sent off to the remote corners of the land, listen to Pham Duy's voice in his recent CD Ngay Tro Ve......)

what the heck? I thought you were historian. You don't know where Thanh Hóa is? It's among the most mentioned and most important provinces in Viet history. It was on this land that Nguyễn Kim built up his anti-Mạc regime, starting the 50-year-long War of Nam Triều (Southern Dynasty) and Bắc Triều (Northern Dynasty). Thanh Hóa also held important position in many Vietnamese revolts against the Chinese.

LMAO I think the current Hanoi accent spoken by VTV and VTC news anchors (especially female anchors) are better than any other Vietnamese accent.

Ky Duyen's accent is fake. And Nguyen Ngoc Ngan's accent is overrated. I don't like Pham Duy's accent either.

I have a very Xigon accent which is because I'm very well educated and learned how to pronounce things right. Alot of people overrated Hanoian's accent and think that the people overthere talk really sweet, especially the guys. Then they start immitate that kind of accent which actually makes a fool out of themselves. I, on the other hand, know how to use my advantages by using a warm, hearting and correct Southern voice and focus on making the other person feel that they are talking to a much more truthful and friendly person than just a fake sweet talker. The technique really works out, and I had alot of female friends from Hanoi (also Xigon ones too) icon_smile.gif. I'm tired of people who don't know how to develop or make use of what they already have.
XigonCongchua-again your historical facts about Thanh Hoa are very cool. Thanks for contributing.
thumbsUp
I agree 100% with Xigon.
The northern accent makes the Vietnamese language sound more developed and sophisticated.
It's soft, smoothe, and very pleasant.

I know what you're talking about. Even though I love Hanoi accent I never imitated it because I know I sound best in my native accent and besides my imitation would ruin the Hanoi accent LOL.
Saigon accent doesn't sound as smooth and sophisticated as Hanoi accent but it can sound quite nice if you speak it in a proper way. That's what I do: speak the dialect in a proper way, not a lazy way. Do you want to hear my lovely Saigon accent? embarassedlaugh.gif

But lazy Northern speakers would sound just as bad as Southern speakers embarassedlaugh.gif

Am I the only one who prefers the southern accent? It sounds laid back and friendly. embarassedlaugh.gif

Real Hanoian accent rules! Sophisticated and educated. biggthumpup.gif (không phải giống em gái Hà Nội ở post trên nhá. Mà cũng không phải là em K. Duyên eo éo làm dáng và anh Ngọc Nhạn quê gốc Sơn Tây.)

This Hanoi accent is very nice imo

The Hanoi accent is long gone. Nowadays, the stuff you hear on Viet TV is plain countryside dialect.
XigonCongchua
^ It's still there. You just need to find it among other Hanoi accents. Keep in mind that Hanoi today is much more diverse than Hanoi in the past.

But seriously who are you to determine which accent is "true Hanoi" and which accent isn't? Talktohand.gif
