What system ?
Goombaking209
Green Card for what? To become able for legal status in the US?
iyahcure
yeah, wth is this lottery you talkin about?
Nikkie_nid
Aw... seems like I didnt power my question well.

But this link tells: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States...t_Resident_Card
iyahcure
oh,so you not living in america?
Nikkie_nid
I live in my home country.
Goombaking209
Of all time and places Nikkie, WHY would you want to live in the US? Don't you want to be the future of Cambodia? It does start with your generation after all.

Anyway whoever wants to be a US citizen or live or work here should think twice before they start putting time and energy into it. The economy is really bad right now and the price of basic living expense like food and water is ridiculously high.
Nikkie_nid
Urr... may I remind you to read the very first sentence?
Goombaking209
May I ask what those ton of benefits might be?

-No reliable health-care system
-Federal aid is going to be cut
-Budget cuts in almost every sector including education, healthcare, and infrastructure
-Transportation is still more or less bad
-Work is really hard to find, in almost every sector
-Living expense is too high at a time when the economy is terrible
-Minimum wage barely provides for a suitable living standard

^ These are very few and many problems American Society is experiencing right now. So lets see what kind of perks a green card holder can benefit from?
Sovann
nith u can try apply for green card to australia or new zealand too, ask ur parents.

i would have tried for green card to america if i were in his position.

in srok khmer, things are going a bit funny sometimes, not stable life

Nikkie_nid
Thanks, I'll ask my dad.

If you want to immigrate, then I'd suggest Australia icon_smile.gif.

Melbourne is considered one of the most livable cities in the world and usually gets first or second place each year. The only problem is that we have to pay more for electronics than others icon_sad.gif....
Sovann
agreed. or sydney.

I assume you're talking about the Diversity Visa Lottery sponsored by the US State Department every year. Check the website www.dvlottery.state.gov

It's a program to bring in more immigrants of the under-represented nationalities to the US. Since only about 50,000 visa are available each year, only citizens from certain countries can apply. Cambodians (khmers) are one of them. Quite a few khmers have been selected over the past few years.

The requirements are simple:
- 18 yrs old and up
- at least finish highschool (college educations are preferred)
- some work experience
- have access to a computer w/ internet connection (you have to apply online)

The selection takes place in the US and it is computerized and random. There are a few companies in Phnom Penh who claim to be able to get you selected for a certain fees. Don't be fooled. Like I said; the selection process is done in the US by a computer. Even if you can bribe the US ambassador, I still don't think he can do anything for you.

You can apply for yourself, your relatives, and any other people. But each person can only apply once a year. The DV2010 application period will start on 10/02/08 to 12/01/08. After that you have to wait until next winter.

Just check the above website and/or get the info from the US Embassy in Phnom Penh for more rules and regulations.

I still believe that America is the land of opportunities, eventhough, it's less now than before.

Everyone are pretty much equal. And, with education and knowledge, one can choose to either lead or follow.

In Cambodia, however, you're pretty much a nobody unless you have connections with the ruling class.
tkekhmer
I think no matter where you are you have to work to accomplish what you want, it just depends on where you are, and yes right now would be a bad time to try to accomplish something in the US but then again if you wait for the economy to pick u[ it may become harder? but if i had the opportunity i would definitely pick Australia.
Goombaking209
I don't know what is going on in you guy's heads but for me the future of US is getting more so bleak than ever.
khamara
Not only in America, everywhere around the world thing are going backward, less jobs, economic suck, the cost(value) of money is going down, the rich got richer, the poor are dying. Whatever you can get Nid,learn, take on the opportunity, US,Australia,Switzerland,Canada, France, Africa, whereever you never know till you've tried...

Look like he's in the US already. Lottery is a lottery, pretty much depend on luck and not reliable. This is how my uncle did. Get married to the US citizen is the best way to go about.

@KhmerLove: How reliable is that website and how reliable is the online registration program? Is it better than to apply to the Embassy?

Everyone, I know you might come with ideas on the reason I would want to leave Cambodia for US, but sometimes, the greater good lies within the decision we made. Cambodia is my beloved country. Leaving it doesnt mean that I wont come back for help, or the possibility that I come back to live.

I know everywhere is sinking on jobs and the economics is killing the poor. What can we do then? If we can do something for this, then its to find the greater good.

Man, why I'm so stuck with the greater good?

Anyway, I'm doing upon my parent request. For me, leaving Cambodia is not my only option.

Thanks everyone for helping me out.

America is a great place. Sure the economy might be going down hill right now, but I wouldn't want to live in any other country but the good old U. S. of A. It provides you with many great opportunities, but you have to take advantage of them - meaning you have to work hard and make better of yourself. Go to school and get a marketable skill. Good areas to get into are healthcare, engineering, law, and IT. Don't expect free handouts though. The first few years might a little rough due to cultural differences, language, etc.

Very well said. beerchug.gif

You always have to work hard if you want your life to mean anything. In the US, if you work hard you'll prosper. In Cambodia, if you work hard you'll get by. If you want to prosper you'll have to bribe to get connection, and be in the 'circle' with the ruling class.

You can go to the US, Canada, Australia, or any other developed countries in europe to get education. Then you can go back to Cambodia to help your people.

The thing about this DV (Diversity Visa) Lottery is that it's legal (govn't sponsored) and free. All it takes is a few minutes to fill out an application (online) , upload the application, and upload your picture (passport format).

Getting greencard throu marriage is a booming (illegal) business right now. You'll have to pay a huge amount of money upfront. If everything works out, you get here quick. If not, well, it can cost you a lot more extra money and you can end up in jail. beerchug.gif

I'm not sure which system is better. Hmm, if US embassy accept Green Card application, u should apply there. Yhen I't depend on yr luck. Right?

U have similar idea to me, abroad is just a place for me to work, to study. Cambodia is a home.

ok, hope good luck come to you soon.

Perhaps, you had missed my post in which I emphasized that you have to apply online. They stopped accepting paper applications 2-3 years ago.

Maybe the US Embassy has a computer that you can use, but you have to apply online.

Sorry, KhmerLove. I didn't mean to cut in. beerchug.gif

We only tried to help, you asked. There's no right or wrong answer you knew that.Whatever you or your parents want you to do is your business,we can't change your mind, only you know who you are, and what you're about. Everyone of us here loves our country even if we all a broard, that doesn't make us less khmer(Cambodian) than you are. I assumed your parents want the best for you and your future, coz you're still young and have a bright future. They don't want you going what they've been thru...

yeah ; you right everywhere is sinking on job and economic is killing the poor, the only thing you can do is doing your best, We individual can't change what it is..... well you know the rest..

I wish you luck and continued doing what you've been doing...believe in yourself !

If you have a family business in Cambodia, you can use it as a leverage in obtaining a visitor visa. Or you can try for the student visa. Either way will only give you a temporary stay (each can be extended to a certain duration) in the US. Once you're here, other opportunities might arise--for example, you might be able to find someone to help you out.

FYI, the price for a complete paperwork and permanent resident card (green card) in my area (Washington D.C.) ranges from $15,000-$35,000.

Yep, obviously there are quite a few affluent families in Cambodia (mainly in PP) who won't think twice about scrapping together their savings to send their relatives to the US.

Yeah, most of them thought that way a few years ago. Back in the early 90's, any young male with US citizenship was a potential gold mine to them.

Nowaday, they kinda holding back a bit more on their expection of what life in the US is like.
