This just for the money oscar is a greedy bastard and so is manny that is why i don't want to see manny in politics because that greedy fuk is very capable of corruption. This match is more like a gladiator fight or a freak show just to earn big bucks for both of them.

Oscar De La Hoya is an Olympic gold medalist. And of course a very famous boxer. But I am not much aware of Manny Pacquiao except I hear about him from Filipinos sometimes. But let's see what happens. Boxing is a very unpredictable game. One right punch can do wonders.

Mad rush on for Pacquiao-de la Hoya tickets

abs-cbnNEWS.com

Tremendous interest in the showdown between “The Golden Boy” Oscar de la Hoya and Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao is reflected in the mad rush of people asking about how and where to buy tickets for the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on December 6.

Even Manila-based sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz has unexpectedly received inquiries and suggestions on how to get a hold of tickets.

While tickets are being peddled on the Internet, they haven’t gone on sale as yet since there are other big fights ahead of the de la Hoya – Pacquiao card on December 6. One of those looking for fight tickets is the Philippines No. 1 Davis Cup tennis star Cecil Mamiit.

In an e-mail, Mamiit told Nathanielsz, “I’m in search for some tickets for the fight. I have a group of friends and family planning a trip to see the fight and we really would love to get hold of tickets to make the trip worth it. We are willing to pay a reasonable price.”

Mamiit said he was “just seeing if you have any suggestions on how we could get a hold of some and we would really appreciate the help.”

Both Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin “Jeng” Gacal, and close friend Rex “Wakee” Salud have already been besieged by requests for tickets indicating growing interest in the fight despite sharply divided opinions on whether the fight is right or whether its all because the price is right.

Arum flooded with ticket demand
spacer
By Nick Giongco

Bob Arum swore he is not exaggerating when asked about the response to the Dec. 6 welterweight war between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya.

"Every call is for 100, 200 (pieces) tickets and the phones (at Top Rank) and my phone have been ringing all day asking when tickets are going to come out," Arum told the Bulletin yesterday from Las Vegas.

"I think the same thing’s happening over at Golden Boy Promotions (GBP)," said Arum., who said last week that the most expensive will be priced at around ,500.

Arum has been there and done that but the seventy-something lawyer insists it’s been a very long time since Top Rank has seen such a tremendous reaction to a boxing match.

The Pacquiao-De La Hoya showdown will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and Arum isn’t afraid to be quoted that "we might need three MGM Grands" to accommodate the boxing fans who want to witness history.

The MGM Grand has a seating capacity of 17,157 for boxing.

With over three months remaining, there’ll be plenty of time to hype the event even further and Arum and De La Hoya-owned GBP are going on a six-city, five-day tour that will kick off with a press conference at Statue of Liberty in New York on Oct. 1 (Wednesday).

"From New York, we will go to Chicago on Thursday, Houston and San Antonio on Friday, San Francisco on Saturday and Los Angeles on Monday," said Arum.

Top Rank and GBP are on the same page in their pursuit of generating never-before-seen attention and both fighters, their respective entourage and TV crew from HBO, will take (12-seater) private planes to the different cities for the media blitz.

Pacquiao on TV show, fails to watch fight
spacer
By NICK GIONGCO

Even if it were King Kong and Godzilla slugging it out on television yesterday, Manny Pacquiao couldn’t have cared less.

As Juan Manuel Marquez was trying his best to impress against Joel Casamayor in Las Vegas, Pacquiao was so engulfed in his showbiz commitments that he didn’t bother to watch the Mexican marvel make a rousing comeback with a knockout win over the Cuban émigré.

"I didn’t see the fight," Pacquiao told the Bulletin moments after Marquez crowned himself as The Ring magazine lightweight king before almost 8,000 fans at the MGM Grand after business manager Eric Pineda handed the phone over to him. "I am here at (GMA 7 noontime show) S.O.P."

"Really?" asked Pacquiao when told that Marquez had beaten Casamayor in stunning fashion.

Marquez had fought and lost by the slimmest of margins to Pacquiao the second time they met last March in a super-featherweight tussle.

When the Filipino lefty decided to leave the 130-pound ranks to try his luck at lightweight (135 lbs) and become successful, Marquez also moved up in weight.

The problem is that Marquez is not on Pacquiao’s radar screen right now since Pacquiao is revving up to battle Oscar De La Hoya at welterweight on Dec. 6. In the event Pacquiao upsets the Golden Boy, he will be matched with Ricky Hatton of England in another money-making match.

Marquez is hoping that should De La Hoya succeed in putting Pacquiao in his right place, the public will demand that they rumble for the third time.

Despite appearing as though he was indifferent to what the rest of the boxing world does, Pacquiao could not be faulted for being so yesterday.

Pacquiao was scheduled to fly out of Manila for Los Angeles late last night to set up training at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood and the few remaining hours were the only available time for him to fulfill his commitments.

In fact, Pacquiao stayed for less than 24 hours in Cebu province beginning Saturday just to fulfill his vow to the townsfolk of Pinamungahan for a long-delayed visit and was already back in Manila by the time the sun had come up yesterday.

Pacquiao-Hoya tickets gone in 2 hours – Arum
spacer
By NICK GIONGCO

The remaining tickets for the Dec. 6 welterweight war between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya will sell out "in two or three hours," Top Rank president Bob Arum said yesterday from Las Vegas.

Arum had met with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer and officials from MGM Mirage on Thursday (Friday in Manila) and they’ve already decided on the number of tickets that will go to each party.

Only a fraction will be made available to the public since all three companies have already received bulk orders, while the MGM Mirage will use the tickets to entice high-rollers to stay at the MGM Grand and its chain of hotels.

As usual, "Manny also placed an order for tickets," said Arum, although it is not certain if Pacquiao will give tickets away in huge numbers as in the past when nearly every Tom, d!ck and Harry can be given one.

The MGM Grand will be reconfigured to seat more than 15,000 although it can hold up to 17,000 spectators. Due to the magnitude of the event, the press will have an unusual number of requests for credentials with lots of applications coming not only from the US, Mexico and the Philippines but from Europe, South America and elsewhere.

Tickets--to be priced at $ 1,500, $ 1,000, $ 750, $ 500 and $ 250-- will go on sale on Sept. 24 and Arum is not surprised why a premium ringside seat on the Internet this early is being dangled for as high as $ 42,000.

"There won’t be a single ticket left for sale (at face value)."

In anticipation of a huge turnout of sports fans who will not get tickets for the fight, Arum said at least 30,000 seats will be put up for closed circuit in different MGM-owned hotels on the Strip like The Bellagio and The Mirage.

As in the pay-per-view revenues, Pacquiao will also get a cut in the sale of closed circuit showing.

"Everything goes to the pot," said Arum.

When De La Hoya fought Floyd Mayweather last year, all 5,400 tickets that went on sale for the public were bought in three hours and in the final days leading to the bout Ebay had listings of ,000 for a ringside seat.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao is scheduled to leave for the US tomorrow night to start the pre-training camp program and will go full-blast after a six city-five day press tour that will kick off on Oct. 1 in New York.

AGAINST PACMAN
Hoya favors Marquez style
Tickets for megabuck December fight down to 2,000
By Marc Anthony Reyes
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Oscar De La Hoya hopes to defuse Manny Pacquiao’s fiery style the way Juan Manuel Marquez did in their two previous encounters which the Filipino ring icon barely survived.

In an interview with the boxingscene.com, De La Hoya said he has been studying tapes of Pacquiao’s two fights against Marquez to make sure that he’s prepared “when he comes in with his explosive style and his hard punches.”

And what better way to prepare him against the smaller but feistier Pacquiao for their Dec. 6 fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, than hiring the renowned Mexican trainer of Marquez—Nacho Beristain.

Beristain, considered as Mexico’s top trainer, guided Marquez from three knockdowns in the first round to a split draw with Pacquiao in their first fight in 2004.

Last March, Pacquiao had to settle for a split decision win over Marquez for the WBC super featherweight crown in a fight many thought could have gone either way.

“Obviously I have to be smart. I have to use my jab. I have to be rangy in that ring, just the way Juan Manuel Marquez did against him both of their fights,” De La Hoya was quoted as saying. “He (Marquez) was using that long jab. He was using those long right hands.

“I just have to make sure that I have my hands up when Pacquiao comes in with that explosive style and his hard punches.”

De La Hoya said in a recent interview in Las Vegas that he is inclined to tap Beristain after his long-time strategist Floyd Mayweather Sr., opted to train Ricky Hatton, who is fighting Pauli Malignaggi for the IBF junior welterweight title late November.

“I’m going to want someone who’s experienced. I want someone who has the knowledge of Pacquiao and Pacquiao’s style,” De La Hoya told reviewjournal.com.

Pacquiao, who is scheduled to leave for the US tonight, visited his relatives in Cebu after attending mass in a chapel he built from his earnings.

Meanwhile, Top Rank president Bob Arum said there will only be a few tickets left for the public to buy as his company, De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions and the MGM Mirage had placed bulk orders for the fight.

Arum didn’t say how many tickets Pacquiao ordered but the Filipino ring icon normally gives away hundreds of tickets to his friends during his fights.

“I am not a ticket broker or seller. But the demand is wild. This fight is going through the roof. I was a bit skeptical at first due to the size difference but this is what the public wants,” said De La Hoya’s top close adviser Don Chargin in an interview with boxingconfidential.com.

Earlier reports said TR, GBP and MGM are placing 5,000 tickets each, reducing the number of tickets available to the public to no more than 2,000. The MGM Grand seats 17,000 people.

Tickets are priced $1,500, $1,000, $750, $500 and $250, but Arum admitted that no ticket will be available at face value anymore.

Brokers and online ticket sellers have started peddling tickets that are expected to sell as much as $42,000 for the precious floor-seats.

During the box-office hit De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather fight last year, gate receipts reportedly reached $20 million.

Arum, in a recent radio interview, said there’s a big possibility the fight could top that record mark.

Oscar de La Hoya has advantage vs Manny - Forbes

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The last fighter to face Oscar de La Hoya thinks the Golden Boy has the advantage over Manny Pacquiao on December 6 but the Filipino’s speed and agility can tilt the favor.

“If Manny can keep moving very fast, jumping on and out he can give Oscar a lot of problems and then score. But Oscar, fifth round or so, he’s just been a strong puncher," said Steve Forbes, in an interview with www.sportsnews.ph. Forbes lost by unanimous decision to De La Hoya last May 3,

Forbes also belittled Freddie Roach’s claims that the Golden Boy no longer has the power.

“In our fight I was well-prepared I think he can still pull the trigger. He still has punching power. One year ago he fought a split decision against Floyd Mayweather. Nobody has ever done that. He took a year off and then he fought me. It’s not like he took any abuse. He fought more relax in the later rounds." Forbes added that Manny jumping from 135 pounds straight to 147 puts the Filipino at a disadvantage.

“Yeah, (it’s ) very difficult I think because Manny never had one fight at above 135 pounds. I would say if he had a couple of fights maybe 144, then I would say he probably would feel really comfortable but I’m just anxious." - Sun.Star Cebu

Let’s not allow bums to bully Manny Pacquiao
By Recah Trinidad
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—They’re trying to bully and push Manny Pacquiao against the ropes ahead of his monumental match against Oscar De La Hoya, thus making it incumbent upon self-respecting Filipinos to come to the side of the national sports treasure.

Pacquiao, battle-scarred, could take all these dirty shots, smile, and spit them out.

But, as he has decided to summit a private Everest for the glory of the Filipino race, we should not allow these filthy assaults go unanswered.

The call of the moment is to insulate (Pacquiao) and fire back.

* * *

Try this dig, definitely below the belt, posted at the Internet on Wednesday: “After Oscar (De La Hoya) hurts Pacquiao with a left hook to the brain, you will see the Filipino doing the crackhead dance. He might do the Zab Judah crackhead dance mixed with some Thomas Hearns wobbly, wobbly. It will be great to see that.”

That diatribe was courtesy of BoxingConfidential.com executive editor Ricardo Lois.

The offender, who must’ve banged his head blind against the wall too many times, definitely knows how a busted coconut behaves.

“This will make up for what we’ve had to put up with Pacmaniacs over the years,” Lois, wobbly-wobbly, added. “It will be great seeing Oscar knock Pacquiao out in three rounds.”

* * *

Why Lois, who should’ve first shed his title as executive editor before going wild, had to go foul in order to hit back at so-called Pacmaniacs, exposes the prevailing frustration of self-styled experts whose favorite fighters Pacquiao has either humbled or crushed en route to the “biggest fight of my life” against De La Hoya.

Majority of these boxing critics have since nodded and say, yes, Pacquiao is the finest pound-for-pound warrior in the world.

Bob Arum, for one, was a lead Pacquiao disbeliever, swearing a couple of days before the Pacman’s third encounter with Erik Morales that “my boy will kill Pacquiao.”

Arum, in the run-up to that concluding bout, hardly ran out of words in dismissing Pacquiao’s worth.

* * *

How Arum has surrendered and embraced Pacquiao like a favorite son is prizefight history.

Anyway, as Arum has been helping sell the Dream Match between Pacquioa and De La Hoya, the esteemed promoter should be told that there’s a growing anti-Pacquiao campaign.

The move to belittle Pacquiao could actually be double-edged.

Maybe it’s part of the campaign to lure more fans into driving to Las Vegas on Dec. 6 or buying pay-per-view slots.

The other attempt, definitely more believable, is the move to prick Pacquiao’s pride.

* * *

Listen, please: If to a bullfight, they are trying to gore and bleed Pacquiao to further enrage him.

The idea is for the Pacman to lose focus, snort like a bleeding bull and, hopefully, go wild in trying to soothe his bruised pride during the fight.

Pacquiao must be warned against falling into the same trap that cost him his first fight with Morales.

In that bout, Pacquiao practically went blind and jumpstarted as he raced and raged for an outright knockout, all the while thinking he could overrun the opponent.

* * *

Look, trainer Freddie Roach continues to claim that Pacquiao would prevail riding on superior speed, power and stamina.

But, equal to these gifts, Pacquiao could enhance victory only if he loads up on patience and humility.

He must work equally hard on defense and, just like to the great bamboo, be resilient and sway in order to succeed.

More than sheer firepower, his ability to protect himself and survive should spell ultimate triumph.

The Pacman must not allow himself to be bullied against the ropes ahead of his biggest fight.

After Hoya, it’s Hatton, Mayweather
By Marc Anthony Reyes
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Looks like Manny Pacquiao has figured out how his march towards becoming a full-time promoter will run: Oscar De La Hoya first, Ricky Hatton next and then, if he’s up to it, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Pacquiao, arguably the world’s best fighter across weight classes, rattled off his choice of opponents in what is seen as a retirement parade, one that will kick off with the Dec. 6 bout against De La Hoya at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

In an interview with boxingherald.com during lulls in his training at Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, Pacquiao said he might take on British junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton next and then lure Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement.

“That (a fight with Hatton) is a possibility,” Pacquiao said. “If I win this fight (against De La Hoya), maybe Floyd Mayweather will come out of retirement looking for a big fight.”

Hatton, who is preparing for his Nov. 22 fight against Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden in New York, told doghouseboxing.com that he is setting his sights on fighting whoever wins between De La Hoya and Pacquiao.

Hatton earlier told the Manchester Evening News that if Pacquiao pulls an upset, he is willing to face the Filipino superstar at light welterweight (140lbs), But if the American legend takes it, he will fight De La Hoya at welterweight.

After the three matches, Pacquiao, who will turn 30 on Dec. 17, said he will move on to promoting boxing, just like the 35-year-old De La Hoya, who owns Golden Boy Promotions.

“It’s my plan that after my boxing career, I want to be a promoter,” Pacquiao told boxingherald.com. “I have a promotion coming up on Sept. 26 in San Diego.”

Pacquiao’s pronouncement practically slammed the door on the completion of a Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy, though the WBC lightweight champ earlier said he is willing to give Juan Manuel Marquez a crack as long as he is the promoter of the fight.

Meanwhile, a ringsidereport.com feature article said Pacquiao’s only chance of winning against De La Hoya is scoring a decision and that not even his vaunted power punching “can hurt De La Hoya.”

“The ‘Pacman’ must use his head movement to make De La Hoya miss with the jab, and then he can step inside. When he gets inside, he cannot settle for one or two punches. He has got to throw five, six, and seven punch combinations before he backs away,” said the article.

“Pacquiao has got to throw a lot of punches when he has the chance to do so. He has no choice but to outwork De La Hoya in this fight. It is not likely that he will be able to score a knockout.”

The article added that “trying to impress the judges will not be good enough, he (Pacquiao) has to leave them with no choice.”

Journalists in verbal slugfest over Pacquiao-De la Hoya

By DENNIS GASGONIA abs-cbnNEWS.com

War has already erupted three months away from the “monumental battle” between Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao and international boxing star Oscar de la Hoya.

The conflict, however, did not take place inside the ring. And it’s not yet between Pacquiao and de la Hoya.

Rather, it sparked over the internet where sports analysts and commentators squabble over a “scathing” remark about Pacquiao’s chances against the bigger de la Hoya.

The “war” started when Boxing Confidential.com writer Michael Marley quoted his executive editor Ricardo Lois as saying that “after Oscar hurts Manny with a left hook to the brain,” Pacquiao will be “doing the ‘crackhead’ dance.”

The same article which was titled, “Lois: Oscar's Left Hook To Brain Will Make Pacquiao Do Crackhead Dance” also quoted the executive editor saying that the Filipino boxer “might do the Zab Judah crackhead dance mixed with some Thomas Hearns wobbly, wobbly. It will be great to see that.”

Lois was also quoted as saying that such an incident “will make up for what we’ve had to put up with Pacmaniacs over the years.”

The article was posted on Boxing Confidential.com on September 17.

Nathanielsz defends Pacquiao
Two days later, Filipino boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz criticized Lois for the remark.

In his article titled, “Hate has no place in boxing, most of all from journalists” posted on Philboxing.com, Nathanielsz said that what distressed local analysts was Lois’ “seeming hatred for Pacquiao”.

“To put it bluntly that’s a cheap shot,” he said in the article. “How in the name of sanity if not fair comment can a boxing writer in the position of Lois draw satisfaction for the irrational and sometimes vicious and vulgar comments by Pacquiao fans by enjoying the demolition of Manny – if it happens at all?”

Nathanielsz stressed that Lois’ seem to want the spectacle of seeing Pacquiao suffer to savor the joy of getting back at some of the Filipino’s rabid fans.

“We expected more class from an American boxing writer but then again, that may be too much to ask just as it is in expecting some foul-mouthed Pacquiao supporters to change their ways and bury their seeming hatred,” said the veteran boxing commentator.

‘Just a joke’
On September 20, Lois posted on Boxing Confidential.com a “denial” that his remark was an expression of hate.

Lois said it was merely a joke.

“It was a joke. Yes, I think de La Hoya will win and by knockout, but once again, that particular comment was supposed to be funny, a joke,” he said in an open letter addressed to Nathanielsz.

Through the letter, Lois also clarified that he has no hatred against Pacquiao and his fans.

“I have no hatred for Manny Pacquiao and Pacmaniacs. Just because I believe that Manny Pacquiao will lose and by knockout, does not mean I hate the man,” said the Boxing Confidential executive editor.

Lois also claimed that Nathanielsz “failed” to get his facts straight by relying on the story written by Marley.

“For your information, here is the exact quote: ‘When he hits him with a left hook to the brain...In a sick kind of way, we have had to deal with the Pacmaniacs over the last several years...May be he will do a crack head shuffle a la Zab Judah with a small mix of the Thomas Hearns wobbly, wobbly Thomas Hearns and it might be worth putting up with what we have put from the Pacmaniacs for the last several years.’”

Failing to admit the error
Lois went on to claim that Nathanielsz failed to quote him by relying on Marley’s story.

“You did not even quote me correctly. You have put too much faith in Mr. Michael Marley's note taking skills,” he said.

He, however, did not clarify why he, as the executive editor of Boxing Confidential.com, allowed his own writer to post, what he insinuated was a poorly quoted article.

Lois also did not say if he reprimanded his writer for the weakness.

He urged Nathanielsz to calm down as his “inflammatory article” fuelled anger among Pacquiao fans.

“So, slow down, your article has fueled dozens and dozens of Manny fans to e-mail me threats, and insults to my family - wishing them harm, and worse, because you took the time to write an inflammatory article without listening to my exact comments,” he said.

He then invited Nathanielsz to talk to him through his radio program Boxing Confidential Radio where they could argue their points.

Inquirer sports columnist joins the fray
Recah Trinidad, a veteran sports columnist for Philippine Daily Inquirer, called on Pacquiao fans not to allow “bums” to bully the “Filipino national treasure”.

In his column Bare Eye published on September 20, Trinidad said the “attack” against Pacquiao makes it “incumbent upon self-respecting Filipinos to come to the side of the national sports treasure.”

He added that Lois’ “diatribe” is definitely below the belt.

“Why Lois, who should’ve first shed his title as executive editor before going wild, had to go foul in order to hit back at so-called Pacmaniacs, exposes the prevailing frustration of self-styled experts whose favorite fighters Pacquiao has either humbled or crushed en route to the ‘biggest fight of my life’ against De La Hoya,” he said.

“We should not allow these filthy assaults go unanswered. The call of the moment is to insulate (Pacquiao) and fire back.”
