It may only be September but this has not stopped partygoers and beer lovers from joining San Miguel Corp.'s (SMC) "Oktoberfest" in Manila as the country attempts to break the world record for setting up the longest beer bar in the world.

Local beer lovers trooped to Ortigas Friday night where free beer were offered as 200 bars were set up from San Miguel Avenue to St. Francis in Mandaluyong City.

The set up was measured at around 600 meters, 360 meters longer than Guinness record-holder Taiwan.

The Philippines is also trying to set a Guinness record for the most number of people toasting for a beer event.

Oktoberfest organizers said that aside from free beers, thousands of Friday’s "beer troopers" will be treated to a free concert where at least 40 rock bands are scheduled to play. The main feature presents alternative rock band Third Eye Blind.

"Sobrang espesyal ng gabing ito dahil lahat ng magkakaibigan magkakasama ngayon dito para magsaya dahil sasali tayo sa Guinness World record at may tampok pa na foreign band," said Assie Carpio, San Miguel Corp. Brand Manager.

What's up with Filipinos and making stupid events to break stupid wold records. Is it to distract us from all the other prblems the country is facing?

I mean no one's stopping them from doing stuff like this but it's like these ppl have bought into the idea that the Philippines will never be known for anything big so they might as well continue their $hitty lives and be known for having the longest beer bar in the world. icon_rolleyes.gif

I would even be more proud if a Filipino broke the Guinness world record for having the longest penis.

Well , sorry to disagree but having the longest bar to my mind helps the country in a number of ways not least of which is tourism. OK, perhaps not the tourists one would really want but lets face up to it it aint gonna win much else other than the worlds most corrupt politicians.

Also I think it's better than the world record in eating hamburgers - a beer is far more nutrious.
With the Guinness record publicity, San Miguel gets to advertise their product. Maybe ham_let would like it more if corporations gave more back to the community. Like they could organize volunteer efforts to clean up the trash around small towns. Like an annual cleanup event. Then have a free beer garden afterwards. (Don't stand in front of the lechon - you might get trampled in the rush.)

After the frosty posts from ham_let, I'm reticent to continue. But what the hell!

I would not want to be within 10km of the event. I've seen Filipinos at a buffet make Great White Sharks in a feeding frenzy look like guppies. If it were free beer, that would be just plain dangerous.

Disclaimer - any person who has been to a wedding reception buffet knows exactly what I am talking about. I mean no disrespect to Filipinos!!!

I agree with ham_let.

Too many of the Guiness records are completely trivial and do nothing to enhance those who "win" the titles, unlike the genuine record holders who have actually achieved something.

Rather that attempt to get there name in the record books, the Philippines would do far better if we did more to promote the many superb attractions that the country already has.
