I only like some of the oldies that a friend copied for me, like Bubblegum Crisis. Though it's more because it's cyberpunk than because it's mecha. I was into that stuff when I was a little kid. Really old stuff on Puerto Rican TV, though, imported from Japan:

This was the coolest thing for me and my friends, after the Dukes of Hazzard. :-p

I really liked Planetes.

In my opinion, the greatest Mecha anime of all time, Super Robot or otherwise, is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann... I would recommend all anime fans to watch this anime, regardless of whether or not you even like Mecha anime.

I've seen RarXephon but didn't get around to finishing it. I lost interest around half way, probably because it was similar to Evangelion which I wasn't too fond of, but I've heard it's even better than Evangelion, so I might probably continue it again some time in the future.

As for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, you should try watching at least the first eight episodes before dismissing it. Like you, I thought Gurren Lagann was just another boring and typical mecha anime. I also heard some hype over this show, and I was very skeptical about this anime from the very beginning. After the first few episodes, I thought this anime was just another overrated piece of nonsense, but I still continued watching it for a few more episodes, and then a major unpredictable twist suddenly occurred around episode eight and it totally changed my perception of this anime. After that, the anime just kept getting better and better every episode, with even more twists and turns, even more epic action and adventure, and even more heart and passion from the characters. Gurren Lagann is the rare kind of story that inspires you to never give up hope, no matter what kind of odds are stacked against you. Although I didn't even like this anime at first, I'm glad I gave it a chance, because Gurren Lagann is probably the most epic and inspiring piece of fiction I have ever seen!
