Photography is more interesting than most people give it credit for. The problem is too many people have cameras and you get a lot of $hitty photos on flickr instead of rare gems like http://thejavajive.com/blog/.
Plus it's easy to tell if you're becoming better as photographer, and you can photograph almost anything thus making the world you're workplace.
I know I'm being a hypocrite since I chose my major for financial reasons, but go for what you like. It will work better for you in the end.

Yeah, financial reasons. It's the only reason why my moms's against me majoring in photography. She thinks I won't be able to make money. And of course I'm worried about that too, but it's the only thing I see myself doing in the future. Every one else tells me to do whatever I want.

You're better off doing something you can see yourself doing and enjoying. Just do thorough research regarding the major and try to make connections.
