im mistaken for mexican or puerto rican by latinos. whenever i enter a mexican restuarant the servers always speak to me in spanish but i always answer in english. luckily i understand pretty well thanks to my high school spanish teacher who happened to be filipino. once, i went to a professional job interview at a predominantly latino institution where i was interviewed for the first 5 minutes in spanish while only answering in english. the interviewer finally asked if i was mexican or puerto rican and was surprised to find out i was filipino.
when i was in the philippines some taxi drivers thought i was indonesian.
i have been mistaken for jamaican by some filipinos here in the states. it was strange considering i was at simbang gabi mass seated with my very filipino looking parents.

When you see a African can you guess his nationality or even seperate central, from east, west or southern African? How about a European can you tell a Frenchman from a Brit at a glance? There are things to be offended by, is this truly one of them?

It doesn't matter in south Los Angeles because when black people started replacing the whites as they moved west Japanese who came back after the WWII relocation camps were the local asian communitie as they did not have the money then to follow the "white flight" with "Japanese flight" so all asians are called Japanese at first sight. Unless you are running a mom & pop store then you are Korean. To the Central Americans who replaced the Japanese who had left or died out and are replacing the Blacks all asians are Chinese.
In other parts of the world and maybe the neighborhood next door in diverse nations the people will make a different assement and instead of assuming you are Japanese or Chinese they may assume you are Vietnamese or even Mexican depending upon your features.

I have been mistaken for a:
Navajo Indian(United States), twice it happen. First time in a mall in Carlsbad, i Navajo greet me in his languange. Then on base Camp Pendleton, a Navajo did the same thing.
Black, when i was in the US Marines, i got really dark. Filipinos and a Russian in the Middle East thought i was black.
Samoan, Hawaiian, i don't look like it but a few thought i was. They said i was too big for an average Filipino.
Thai, by a Filipino in the US Navy. And a few Thai women when i was in Thailand. They asked how come i always speak in english and not talk to Thai to them.
Malaysian, also in Thailand. I don't see a problem here cuz there are Malays who came to islands of Philippines before the colonial times.
Vietnames, in Thailand also.
Chinese, i was wearing a skater hat, and the flight attendant(very pretty, China Airlines) talked to me in Chinese.

You'd be surprised. There are a lot of ignorant ppl in America.
Is it ignorance when without any further evidence like linking an hispanic name to you that an American makes a snap ID of you based on physical features?
Are you ignorant if you can't make a distinction among the various African nationalities and ethnic groups at a glance? Can you distinguish a Pole from a Brit if you didn't hear an accent or a slavic name? Would that make someone ignorant who can't?
I stand by my earlier theory in most cases if the viewer sees Asian then you will be identified as being part of the dominant Asian ethnic group in that area. Where I am it happens to be Japanese. If the viewer does not pick up on the Asian physical features then again in my location you will be identified as Mexican. It hapens because many Mexicans with more Native American features have a quasi-Asian look.
Not ignorance, just using statistics to take your best shot until more information becomes available like hearing a classically Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese or hispanic name to link to you.

i was never mistaken as any nationality because i was born and grew in the Philippines so everyone acknowledges me as a Filipino
although with few exemptions :
my brother used to call me "albinong ita or puting ita (white aeta)" because of my very curly hair when i was a kid which eventually became quite straight.
but i had a classmate who called me "bumbay! (indian)" for some reason, maybe because i had quite high nose brigde or what.
and another classmate of mine told me i look like Saddam Hussein

I also grew up and residing in PI but very few pinoy think I am a local. It is either I am mixed pinoy or completely banyaga. Most pinoy think I am Indiana or Pakistani or Turkish or mixed africana but foreigners have differing opinions... Palestinian, jew, lebanese, mexican, brazilian, mixed medditeranean, samoan (name all the dark haired race) etc etc etc.
Even my husband who is non-filipino changes his opinion everyweek about my real ethnicity
I think I should take a DNA test. I could travel the world with all the foreign resemblance I have
