Ah, okay. I always wanted to ask how it's supposed to be pronounced but it kept slipping my mind.

The only time I ever heard anyone say it in real life was when this white guy asked me if I was "huh-mong"...

Learn something new everyday. It's going to be hard to break the habit. I still say celtic wrong. And a couple other words too despite knowing the correct pronouciation. I probably sound like a know-it-all when someone corrects me.
'You know it's not Hamong, right? It's Mong.'
'I know.'

Wait...you said the "o" is silent?

How?
I used to think it was Huhmong until recently. I didn't even know what "Hmong" was until like a year ago. I don't think I've even met anyone who's Hmong.
But it shouldn't be that surprising that most people don't know how to pronounce it, if you weren't Hmong wouldn't you mispronounce it too?
Now why would somebody be so misleading as to put an "H" in front of another consonant and think someone was gonna automatically know how to pronounce it right?
I think everyone should get mad at whoever spelled it that way.

We just pronounce it how it's spelled.

cause the hmong way of spelling it is hmoob. where the H is silent again. so i guess they're just trying to make it similar.

why dont they just drop the H then?
does the h-mung language use romanized characters?
SacOfMentos
Jul 8 2005, 07:58 PM
^yup, because there's not a distinct form of an original hmong writing system that we know of right now. There probably was one, but hmong history has many unknown records and holes that we don't know about.
