Anyone interested in Tamil film industry, please contribute here. Certainly AR Rahman still the best anywhere and everywhere. Too bad I can't speak Tamil or Malayalam, I love listening to their songs because most of the time they still maintaining their cultural elements in the songs and videos while time is moving, they becoming fresh combination of elements.

Thanks Sonofgunongjerai. South Indian music especially Tamil classics I enjoy very much I guess because I grew up with that kind of music and play Indian classical instruments the Tabla and dholak. Also the devotion to music and expression was much stronger then than it is now. Though I agree A Rahman is quite popular and have some of his songs I do hope thought that future generation Indians whether Tamil, Punjab or whatever that they do not omit their own culture completely for other styles like rap, pop and rock. I wish to play sarangi a violin kind of instrument such a wonderful instrument.

O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together
O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together
My Divali should come today2x
Tomorrow is only a dream, why should we believe it?
When I plant a rose, it should bloom today itself.

O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together
O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together
If the moon comes in the daytime, is it a sin??2x
If a rainbow comes in the night, is it a crime??
Answer me...sweet drum beats in heart2x

Some desires, few dreams is there life without these?
If you dream 100 times, wont 6 dreams at least come true?
Will the dream come true??

O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together
O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together
Let the cuckoos cry my name
Let the season change suitable to me
Dancing in heart2x
The wind tears in and clears out our perspiration
Tomorrow is for God, today is for human
Life is for those who live.

O, Chirping mynahs2x On hearing my voice, gather together

My Divali day should come today2x
When I plant a rose, it should bloom today itself.

Song translation:

Be a palanquin and bear my weight!
Be the feet and make me tread!
l need this and that Only you must give
Like a soaring bird l must fly in the air!
Must jump and play On the blue sky l must see the starry world!
Please take me there!
Let us go there, move!
Let us go there, move!

A frightening dream!
Or a sculptor, you are!
A twirling tide|or a funny joist you are!
A net craftily set or you a chill in mid summer!
Don't know who you are!
And why befriended me!
You won't leave me alone!
Ok, my lord, let us go!
After slyly waking me up!
This, that or in anyway!
We must be speeding on!
ln the speeding waterfalls!
With glittering water play!
With lot of fanfare must
Bind my ringing ankle bells with the songs of parrots!
ln first game of touch and go

Accompanied by laughter l should frolic with ecstasy!
ln the flooding speedy waters there can't be rhyme and time!
With the playful young ones!
The sky and earth must only just swing and dance!
Be a palanquin!

This one is a religious song, if SEAns people of foreigners with SEAn or Indian descents who wanted to learn about Brahmanism past, learn from this movie, you can see how Brahmins work in the Temple, the ancient Hindu Temple architecture, and also how does ancient Indians culture works. Always remember to give ancient Indians credit for their contributions toward ancient SEAn cultures. Don't be ungrateful.

This one is a devotional movie about goddess Durga.

Amman Devi

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZfDpJE39x8...feature=related

I'm just pointing out a scene from Youtube, you people can find it yourselves.

This movie is about an epidemic hitting a village and many people had died because of the epidemic. The village folks then invoke the help of goddess Amman (Durga) to cure the disease. The goddess then taking the form of a lady appears in the village but no one recognizes her. A young lady among the village folks offered the goddess to stay at her house in the mid-nite and making the pastes of medicine from Neem leaves. Goddess then asks young lady to go to each home and spray this paste in the midnight. Also she said do not look back once you leave. She obeys her, but mentions that in her absence, her house should be safe. So DEVI PROMISES TO STAY IN HER HOUSE TILL SHE RETURNS BACK.

Young lady goes out of the house, but suddenly worries if that women (goddess had taken some food or not (so much love/innocence... only can be seen in India I guess) remembers that there is some rice and women may have it. So, this young woman returns back and was horrified to see that the woman in her house was actually the goddess herself. She prays and thinks 'As per the promise, she will stay in my house (and hence in her village) as long as I do not return. So for the welfare of her village, she decides not to return ever. And she decides to sacrifice her life by jumping into old well.

As soon as she dies, the goddess decides to stay right there in her home as per the promise. And it becomes temple.

Something about Tamil Literature.

Yellango Aadigazh

He is a Tamil novelist and had created a novel called Shilappathikkaram. It means the bangles and how the goddess Kannaki comes to be worshiped. Yellango Adigazh is actually a Prince of Cheran Kingdom of Kerala today. His brother is King Shengguttuvan Cheran. A sage had told him that he will become a King but when his father died he chose to become a Saint. Yellango Adigazh's story, Shilappathikkaram is very realistic and told us about the life of a common husband and wife while the writer is actually a Royal.

The book recounts the history of the Chera, Chola and Pandian kingdoms. Shilappadikaram is based on the lives of the early Tamils of the Pandian kingdom in the first century A D. Written in the form of a romantic trilogy interspersed with erotic verses, the work touches upon moral values, marriage, religion, art, music, dance, caste, myth, politics, military tactics, and a host of other things. Yellango Adigazh is believed had done researches and interviews before writing the novel.

The central characters are Kannaki and Kovilan and the epic tells their beautiful and tragic story. Kannaki willingly takes back her husband who had earlier deserted her for a dancer Madhavi and become ruined in the course of time. The story narrates the couple coming to Madurai in search of their fortune. Kannaki gives her precious 'shilambu' (anklets) to Kovilan in order to acquire some money. Kovilan is mistaken for the one who has robbed the queen of her anklets and is put to death. An irate Kannaki rushes into the king’s court and breaks the remaining anklet upon the floor to reveal that her anklets were of pearls, not gems, thus proving her husband innocent. She then burns up the entire city of Madurai in the flames of her anger. Through Kannaki, this story portrays ‘pattivratas’ in a powerful light. Kannaki is regarded as an incarnation of the goddess Parvati.

The invaluable moral lessons Shilappadikaram teaches are that Divine Law intervenes in the form of death when a king grows negligent of his duty, a faithful wife ought to be universally respected, Fate works in totally mysterious ways and all actions are rewarded according to their nature.

I had read this book translation by Alain Danelou when I visited my varsity library. It is amazing, I love the story flow.

I think many South Indians with good appearance other than old actors with lumpy pregnant like stomach acting with beautiful young girls. They should be acting in many new movies too. And Tamil film industry need to make a paradigm shift by giving the correct roles to correct actors. The girls in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films are undeniably pretty and tip top looking.

I had also watched a Tamil movie called Anniyan (the Stranger) last Dibavali (Divali). This movie is quite interesting.

Anniyan is a Tamil psychological thriller directed by S. Shankar. Dubbed into Hindi as Aparichit, Telugu as Aparichithudu and French, it was a super hit film in Tamil Nadu and a blockbuster in Andhra Pradesh. The film was produced by Oscar V. Ravichandran and distributed in India by Aascar Films. It was released in France by Columbia TriStar Pictures.

The movie stars the actors Vikram, Prakash Raj, Sadha, and Vivek. The score and soundtrack, composed by Harris Jayaraj, was released on 27 April, 2005. The motion picture took over two years to complete, from 2003 to 2005. The film was the most expensive Tamil feature film made of the year costing nearly $6 million. Such a huge outlay reduced its status from blockbuster to superhit in the trade ledgers.

Anniyan is the story of "Rules" Ramanujam Iyengar, known as "Ambi/Omphis" (Vikram), a lawyer who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. Ambi is an innocent and honest lawyer. If he comes across anyone not obeying the rules he files cases against them but all his efforts go in vain.

His constant habit to be perfect in rules and honesty leads him to develop a Multiple Personality Disorder in which a new character in him grows as Anniyan, a grim reaper, (Vikram) and starts a website called www.anniyan.com to hear people's complaints. The new character, Anniyan, is a violent man. When he is Ambi and comes across a person who does not obey rules he makes complaints in his website. When he is Anniyan, he goes and kills them by methods used for torturing people in hell. He apparently takes the definition of these methods from the Garuda Puranam.

During the first half, Anniyan kills 3 different people due to their actions:

* A man who did not stop to save a person in critical condition. Anniyan forces a herd of buffaloes to stampede him to death. He calls this murder "Anthakoopam", a Sanskrit word and one of the punishments in the Garuda Puranam.
* A chef who fails to provide decent food for railway passengers. Anniyan tosses him into a pot and fries him to death. This punishment is called "Kumbhipakam". The chef was the brother of DGP Prabhakar (Prakash Raj) and the death caused Prabhakar to rise with anger, promising to kill his brother's murderer when he is found.
* A factory owner who makes faulty motor parts. He sends a group of thugs to kill Ambi, but this triggers Anniyan, who knocks out all the men. Later, Anniyan ties the owner to a tree and dumps leeches onto his body. This punishment is called "Krimiibhojanam"

Meanwhile, DGP Prabhakar and Chari (Vivek), a friend of Ambi, are after this mystery murderer.

Ambi is in love with his neighbour Nandhini (Sadha), a music teacher. After she rejects him, Ambi develops another personality, a ramp walk model named Remo. Nandhini instantly falls for Remo and his tricks.

Later, Nandhini acquires land, but tries to cheat the government out of taxes. Ambi chooses not to help her, but when Nandhini tells Remo, Anniyan takes over and goes after her. Just as Anniyan is about to toss her into a pit of fire, Anniyan reverts back to Ambi. He is admitted to a hospital where he is diagnosed with a multiple personality disorder. It is at this hospital that Ambi reveals a dark secret from his past when he is hypnotized. When he was a young boy, there was a lot of corruption and incompetence in the police force and elsewhere. There was a loose electric wire which fell into a rather deep puddle. Ambi's sister Vidya slipped out of a rick shaw and fell into that puddle with the unattended wire, in which she was electrocuted, and died. After listening to this story, the doctor (Nassar) concludes that the death of Ambi's sister resulted in the development of the psychological disorder. According to the doctor, Remo will cease to exist only if Nandhini accepts Ambi's love. However, Anniyan will cease to exist only when the country is reformed. Nandhini eventually accepts Ambi's love and Remo disappears.

As for Anniyan, the police catches him after an investigation. During an interrogation, DGP Prabhakar engages in a fight with Ambi/Anniyan, who constantly changes personalities between Ambi and Anniyan to the DGP's confusion. The fight is captured on the security camera and is used as evidence for Ambi's sentence. He is sentenced to two years of psychological treatment at which time if he is cured, he will be released. When he is released, he relapses when traveling in a train, after a man refuses to stop drinking in the presence of ladies. Apparently, the man is the same person who indirectly, became a cause for Ambi's sister's death due to his negligence of duty. He kills the man, hiding the crime from Nandhini as the credits start rolling, proving that instead of eradicating Anniyan from his brain, he has been able to successfully blend the personalities of Remo, Ambi, and Anniyan as one.

The film has comedies by Vivek regarding the anagrams of the Sanskrit words that denote the punishments. Even the titles shown in the beginning of the film slide with quicker animation of their anagrams. Another example is, during the intermission of the film, the word "TENSIONRISM" morphs into the word "INTERMISSION", which is its anagram.

This film, can be closely related to Shankar's previous feature, Indian. Both movies have similar names in pronunciation, and both movies involve the main character rooting out the corrupt elements of India, due to corruption causing the death of the main character's close family member. The main character also gains popularity amongst the public, and shows one of his murders on live TV.

Chatrapathi

I think this is among my favorite movie where Prabhas is the lead actor. LOL, Prabhas looks like my friend, my friend is a Malay guy, but he looks like an Indian. Chatrapathi is a Telugu movie, now I regret myself for not learning Telugu bawling.gif . It's hard to find Telugu people in my country. We only have Tamil community, Punjabis, Pakistanis and a minority of Malayalee community, so I only can learn Tamil or Urdu. Plus many of Telugu community in my community speak in Malay, English, and Tamil, and they never have their vernacular school like Tamilians. I love Telugu and Malayalam people too. Oh yeah, you can find the full movie in Youtube, don't worry.

Synopsis

Sivaji(Prabhas), his brother Ashok (Shafi) and mother (Bhanupriya) are Telugus settled in Srilanka. Due to political problems, they get evicted and return to India 12 years back. During the eviction process Sivaji is separated from his brother and mother. Sivaji reaches Vizag. There is a leader called Baji Rao (Narendra Jha) who exploits these refugees by making them bonded-labor for life. Sivaji turns out to be the leader among the refugees and puts an end to Baji Rao. There by he makes sure that there is no exploitation of refugees. Sivaji is also in constant search of his mother and his obnoxiously-jealous brother. The rest of the story is all about how he wins them back. The end of the movie is happy ending but there are also several South Indian movies with tragic endings.

You can make comparisons with North Indian movies too beside enjoying different cultures in one Nation. Last time, I did not tolerate Indian movies, and is ashamed of my Indian ancestry, but now I think my previous perception is still narrow.

I love no.3 vid icon_smile.gif , Prabhu Deva really is a talented dancer, he also has a distinct character. I guess almost all South Indian actors are talented in dancing and very energitic while dancing. I've seen many of my Indian friends too have been influenced by those actors. A very nice experience seeing them dancing. Arjun Sarja is a Kannarese isn't he? Still fit in his 40's. Never seen his Kannarese movie yet, only seen him in Tamil movies.

@YoungOne: Yeah, I think it's better in Tamil than in Hindi. Is that Manisha Koirala? She's among my favorite actress around 90's. I haven't watch the movie Bombay yet. I'll try asking in Little India about the movie. Malayalam songs are cool too, let's share them here beerchug.gif
