Lets share the movie produced in your country. And comment on it. Please be fair and polite.

Start with

The queen of Langasuka
The movie should name the pirate of the Malayun and it made by the Thai director embarassedlaugh.gif
I think the director who made nangnak is inspired by the Tale of the Lungawi princess and the Pattani cannon. Dont expect too much about the history its just the action fantasi

The Queen of Lung-Gasuka --historical fantasy epic with pirates with ambitious CGI-enhanced underwater fights, and magical adventures with giant whales and deep sea-creatures.

Short story
Interlude I
War rages on … Princes of neighboring dynasties have formed a coalition with rebel pirates, plotting to seize the powerful cannon from the Land of Lankasuka. The mass destruction juggernaut, capable of obliterating foes in a matter of seconds, is much coveted by any party seeking to tip the balance of power to their advantage.

Artillery is deployed, the infantry is mobilized, the Doo Lam force is unleashed ... The clash is critical. The three princesses of the Land of Lankasuka must at all cost protect their realm from the evil clutch of the ongoing wave of invaders – even with their lives on the line.

I know about this.
Are the title of this movie should be "The Queen of Pattani" ? I'm see the movie "Okay Betong" before by same director two yrs back.

And its not Lungasuka but Langkasuka. Just don't make Thai look good and Malay look bad in this movie or it will be another propaganda from Thai's, okay.

No worry Its not base on the true history ,it just the fantasi movie like the loard of the ring

Langkasuka? Hey, do the Malay allow a woman to be a ruling Queen? I've never heard of a Malay Queen....

Aceh is not Malay, CMIIW.

Seriously, do Malay people allow a woman to be a ruler?
As for Aceh, of course they did have ruling Queens in the past. Aceh Women are well-known to be strong and independent here in Indonesia.

That film was about Pattani Kingdom which was in Thailand right now.

Do the Malay accept woman to be the ruler. In the past some of state did accept that.
Bhaskara
So, now is a different story?
Betong
I must say ut up to royal family to accept who will be inherit the throne. i can't comment on that because we have too many King here.
Malay_guy
there's that Kelantan queen. i don't remember her name though. puteri something.
Betong
Puteri Saa'dong and Cik Siti Wan Kembang
Bhaskara
I actually have read somewhere about Cik Siti Wan Kembang. How about nowadays?
malaccan
^Good question actually Bhas. I doubt that Msia would have a ruling Queen anytime soon. It's always the Agong, and the Permaisuri Agong. And interestingly, within our lifetime there'll be a Permaisuri Agong of Malaysia who is descended from Pattani royalty, who is now married to the crown prince of Kelantan.

Why they speak in Thai while actually their language is Yawi (Patani Malay)??? Patanese can't even speak Thai, I met old people from Patani and Yala, very hard to speak Thai with them and I have to speak in Malay again.

The legend of white blood princess actually does happen in Langkawi. We can't play the theater or anything about that Mahsuri girl in the island or else something will happen. Siam entered Langkawi after the killing event happened because she cursed the island on the slander that had been imposed on her. They suffered in there for 7 generations after Siamese occupying the island. Please visit Langkawi when you are free, you can see the evidences there including the poor girl's grave.

Aeroforce, I think the story is based from the historical fact but maybe they had put some fantasies to make the movie interesting. Patani Kingdom does exist. My grandpa is a Tai ethnic although I am not a Thai citizen, we know about Patani and Nakhon Si Thammarat history and I think Thais should be respectful to the Southerners too, they have their own kingdom too like Pi Nong in Lanna and in Esan. The kingdom name is actually Patani not Langkasuka. Langkasuka is older name of the area covering Southern Thai area until Central part of Malaysia.

Patanese are Malays, Patani King had once attacked Pranakhon Maha Khungthep in 17th C. The Patani King is Sultan Mahmud and the Phrabat of Siam at that time is Phranya Tani. The Cannon used by the Patanese to attack Siam called Meriam Sri Patani is now in front of the Ministry of Defence's Office in Bangkok.

@ Bhaskara, here is the link for you about Patani in 17th C. You can read Malay don't you? The website is available in Thai and English too.

Don't be too sensitive sire, of course we are aware that Acheh people are not Malay. Even Mingkabaus, Mendahiling, Kerinchis, Rawa, etc are not Malay. Most people in Malaysia understand Malay as ancient people as ancient as Javanese, those people that they maybe thought as their brother or serumpun they call as Malay, doesn't mean that those people must be from Malay tribe, that means that those people share the same ancient ancestry with the Malays while Melayu too is an ancient term.

Malays too not only living in South Sumatera and Riau in Rembang Indonesia territory, but also up north in Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia and South Thailand since before modern international borders being set up. Why those people still consider themselves as Malay while their modern country are not Malay, and some of them are not even the native in some cases such as in Cambodia.

Why those Inscriptions carved in Sumatera are carved in the old language, called Melayu Purba? It is not Jawa Purba, nor Acheh Purba, nor, Mandahiling Purba. Cham people too tribally are not Malay, but some of them consider themselves as Malay. Malaysian Malays too never consider Javanese or people of other Islands as Malays, they only consider Sumateran as Malays, but that doesn't mean that they are grouping or trying to impose what ever superiority over others, there is no such thing, nonsense.

Malay might have National connotation in Malaysia context today, but it is also historical. Don't mix up the historical value with Nationality sentiment, please.

I'm looking forward to this movie when it gets released on DVD with subtitles.

'Tik' Jesdaporn icon_redface.gif Pholdee plays a court official from Pahang. Oh my, what a huge keris he has there!

The crown on the queen looks really elaborate, but most folks would recognise the Cik Siti Wan Kembang outfit worn on the left.

As it is was worn in Kelantan.

I think Tik Jessadaporn or Prince Pahang appeared on the screen just only 5 minutes from 2 hours of the full movie. laugh.gif

AEROFORCE1
@ sonofgunongjerai They base on the history ,but they tried not to bring to much history in to it because it would be sensitive for those who live down south. The way they made it just like the Hongkong period movie that base on the history but adds lots of Fantasi kungfu technic

@ malacan There is one shot that mention about the malay fisherman village ,the directer built the real Indonisian fisherman village style for this film at Koh Samet near by Pattaya.

Yeah Tik with big Keris only last for 5 minutes embarassedlaugh.gif

Haha word, what a big keris indeed! Even the legendary Taming Sari would be shamed by the sheer size. embarassedlaugh.gif Nice stills by the way, the costumes are very well made!

Oh and yes Malaccan it would be very interesting when the crown prince of Kelantan becomes the Agong - to have a Permaisuri Agong of Pattani royalty, seems like something straight out of my history textbooks. ; P

I find ancient kingdoms very intriguing, especially those of this region. ASEAN has a strong reason to be united because of the connections that we've had in the past - not only economically, but even genetically and culturally.

It would be really nice if Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and even the Philippines can collaborate to produce a good period movie like this. Anyway looking forward to watch this movie too; wonder when can I get it in DVD?

Indeed! One would've thought though that the Taming Sari would've been as formidable as the Pattani keris in size. Of course, that's just the expectation of the untrained like me. : )

In regards to the Kelantanese costume, I found an interesting picture:

Wedding costumes. I doubt if they're still the norm nowadays though. The male headdress is unusual.

Plot
Queen Hijau of Pattani faces overthrow by the rebel Prince Rawai, who is allied with pirate captain Black Raven. The pirates attempt to capture some giant cannon invented by Dutchman Janis Bree and Chinese inventor Lim Kium, but the Dutch ship carrying the cannon blows up and the cannons sink into the sea.

Meanwhile, an orphan sea gypsy boy named Pari is raised in a fishing village, which is constantly under attack by Black Raven's raiding parties. The boy, gifted in the magical art of Du Lum, is taken by his uncle Anjar to learn more of the magical ways of the ocean from White Ray, but the sage refuses to teach the boy. Nonetheless, Pari is soon communicating with the marine life. He grows into manhood and becomes a fighter against Black Raven's pirates.

Black Raven, also a practitioner in the Du Lum ocean magical arts, has been trying to raise the cannons from the depths of the sea.

Queen Hijau wants her own large cannons and seeks the inventor Lim Kium, who has been living in the sea gypsy fishing village. She sends away her daughters, Princess Ungu and Princess Biru. They will be under the protection of the queen's loyal commander, the fierce martial artist Lord Jarang.

At the fishing village, Lord Jarang comes under attack. Pari aids Jarang in fighting off the pirates, and Jarang makes his escape. In the confusion, Princess Ungu is believed to have been killed, but she has actually been rescued by Pari and taken to White Ray's remote island.

There, a romance develops between Ungu and Pari, but neither are able to commit. Ungu is due to marry Prince Pahang, an important ally of Langkasuka. And Pari is still tortured by the death of his childhood sweetheart at the hands of Black Raven's men.

In a cave on the island, Pari encounters Black Ray, an evil, unstable alter ego of White Ray, and Pari begins to learn more about Du Lum and the conflict between the black and white sides of the practice.

Eventually, all the forces - the rebel prince, the pirates, the ocean sorcerers, the queen and the princesses - will battle for the big cannon.

This movie topic is cool.
I have a proposal to AEROFORCE1.
Since he is the OP, the creator of this thread, I want to ask - can you rename the thread "Malaysian Cinema" ?
I am worried that after a while the thread will die and the information will be lost.
The start of this thread has been great, and rather than having it buried under subsequent movie topics, let's incorporate all Malaysian films into this thread and the information will remain together in one comprehensive topic including all of Malaysian Cinema.
Do you think this is a good idea ?
Crystallised Dream
Hi Ralf, there are actually two threads on Malaysian movies:

Malaysian Indie Films

Malaysian Movies (on which is your favourite)

... both of which are dying, especially 'Malaysian Movies'. Personally though I'd like a new thread with the title that you proposed, 'Malaysian Cinema' as it gives a wider avenue to discuss more aspects of Malaysian films.

The problem with this thread is that 'The Queen of Langkasuka' isn't even a Malaysian production. We could however, discuss period movies that touches on the region's unique history.

Is it possible for our moderator to combine the other two existing threads about Malaysian movies into this thread ?
The rule against "bumping" old threads prevents us from saving the information by replying to them.
Of course we must get permission from AEROFORCE1 to combine it all into his thread.
The reason I ask to combine all the movie info in one comprehensive topic is that I have seen many excellent threads die and the information is lost.

kelantanese
How the story end, what happened to the last queen? From what I know, these 4 queens were the last Pattani Royal Family that controlled Langkasuka, there was a coup by Raja Sakti of Kelantan. After the incident Kelantan Dynasty started to control Langkasuka. But when under Kelantan Dynasty, Langkasuka is no more a great kingdom in military because they just focus more in trading and make Langkasuka not so powerful as before.
