#10 is Wrong
FIRST OF ALL, Filipino is merely a Nationality. it is not a race, it is not an ethnicity.
SECONDLY, the philippines is prodominately inhabited by ETHNIC MALAYS. but there is also a large percentage of ETHNIC CHINESE. and like an even smaller percentage of other ETHNICS... All these people can be considered “Filipino” if that is their chosen CITIZENSHIP.
THIRDLY, WE ARE NOT ALL MESTIZOS!!!
Again, Filipinos are prodominately Ethnic MALAY like 95% are Ethnic malay. only like 2% actually are mestizos. Today a Mestizo is a person can be defined as a person who is ethnic malay mixed with somethine else, like Malay mixed with Chinese; or Malay mixed with Spanish; or Malay mixed with American...
The spaniards introduced this word MESTIZO to our islands in order to create a racial caste system, that means he wanted to descriminate the inhabitants of his island territory. he called the native malays “Indios” and labeled us the bottom of the racial caste, in the middle he created the “MESTIZO” class, which at that time was “Indio” mixed with SPanish... they were historically treated better in colonial days which made many “indios” look up to mestizos and wish they can be one. and so many claimed they are mestizo in order to try to ascend in rank. Many Filipinos still try to claim they are half spanish to this day or mixed with spanish to this day based on ignorance that their last name is spanish. well if u actually study filipino history u will learn that we native Malays or “Indios” of the philippines had no traditional custom of surnames or last names, and when the spaniards came, they needed all the conquered Malays to have a last name so they can record who paid taxes and who didnt.... so the spaniard issued spanish last names to the conquered indios. and that is why many have spanish surnames.
Anyways, at the top is the racial caste system was of course the, Spaniard colonizer. He was the Original Filipino. You see we, Indios, were not even “privieliged” enough to be called Filipinos. Filipino was reserve only for people of SPaniard Descent born on the Philippine islands. The name Philippines is named in honor of Spain at the time, King Philip II. ANyways, our “Indio” and “Mestizo” forefathers had to fight to even “earn” that name “Filipino” to call ourselves that.
FOURTH, ETHNIC MALAYS are members of the Mongoliod Race. and Mongoliods are people of the Asian continent. therefore we are Asian. Asian is a geographical term only. Asia is a big azz continent. there are many people on the Asian continent. Mongoliods, Indo-Aryans (indians) Semetics etc. and there are many religions practiced on the Asian continent. LIke Hinduism, BUddhism, Islam, CHristianity. there is no such thing as being "Asian Enough"
FIFTH POINT, THE NATION OF THE PHILIPPINES IS A MULTI-CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS NATION.
this is the reason:
in the beginning like 40,000 years ago. there were negritos, they are small statured black skin people, who settled the region so long ago, that the land was different. They settled when the philippines was relatively one large landmass, as sealevels were much lower and you can transerve from pre-existing land bridges that used to conect to the asian continent but today are underwater as sea levels rose after the last ice age. ANyway, the negrito got stranded on various islands.
next, the ethnic malay invaded the islands around like 5,000 years ago. they entered the region as islands, which is how we know them to this day. so that means Malays were seafarers.... they came from the north. that means they sailed from Southern CHina, into taiwan, and into the philippines. some malay settled and some malay sailed through the philippines and settled other islands, some sailed as far west as madagascar and as far east as easter island.
Anyway the ethnic malay’s native language and culture is known as Austronesian. and that is why from Madagascar to Easter island, all islanders speak a language classified under the Austronesian language family.
eventually foreigners come. The first foreigners to come to the philippines were probably chinese.
the next foreigners to come to the philippines was hindu practiners and came as late as 900AD as recorded by the Laguna copper plate, the earliest manuscript of the philippines written in Kavi script. they introduced a indian writing script which we all adopted and we call Kavi and Baybayin. they also introduced a martial art and hindu religion based on the hindu goddess Kali.
anyways, around the 1300’s islam was introduced to the philippines, but was mainly concentrated in the sulu archipelago, our sourthern most islands, and a small portion of mindanao island.
and in the 1500’s the spanish came and introduced catholism and other things.
then in the 1900’s americans came and introduced protestant sect of christanity and other things like, the English language, for widespread use, democracy and education etc. Spaniards did not educate the indios of the philippines to spanish language, because he wanted to CONQUER us by using DIVIDE AND CONQUER Tactics. he allowed us to retain our indigenous Austronesian languages, although related, not mutually understandable. the spaniard also put the indio under villlage arrest, and forbid the indio from practicing their martial arts and self defense. and instructed the indio to wear a speical dress code, with see through fabric so not to be able to conseal weapons....
anyways, there were some unconquerable tribes of the philippines, each representing the different religions and cultures of the philippines.
there are the indigeous truly native practioners the Igorots of Luzon and the Lumads of Mindanao
there are the Muslim practioners known as the Moro of Sulu archipelago and part of Mindanao island.
together with these indigneous malay and muslim malay practioners, along with the conquered christanized malay, we form today the Philippine Nation.
We just need to find a way to co-exist with each other. And i think the best way to express our Multi-cultural/religious nation is through dance, like the Philippine’s National Bayanihan Dance company, which does the dances of all the cultures of the philippines from Indigenous to Muslim to Christian.
The Word Bayanihan itself is a very appropriate word, which means loosely means Community, Brotherhood, Family, Unity. It is a native concept, and it is good because we were all once native people before some were converted to islam, before some were converted to christanity. we were all indigenous. and indigenous aspect of our culture is very important because it is our bed rock and foundation.
