beerchug.gif I know that Infatuation and Nodrog (sp?) are fellow schoolmates of mine. With all these embarrassing threads I've made on AF, I kinda hope I'll never bump into you guys. badteeth.gif

But everything aside, how is school going? I hate it. icon_sad.gif
Nodrog
Haha, pretty intense right now. FINALS. ugh.. also, I hate how there are so many strange, dirty, crack-addicts around surrey central:@
I cannot wait for the break.

Why are you hating on school? :O

It is 2 am and I am still up, I have a lab exam tomorrow too, sweeeet.

lol! I haven't even started studying for mine yet. icon_sad.gif And I have so much to catch up on. I'm currently a business major, but I realized that it might not be for me anymore... I guess that's why I'm hating on school right now. I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. What's your major? icon_smile.gif

You go to the Surrey campus? I also don't like waiting for the bus late at night around Surrey Central. But because it's a very shady place, usually there'll be a few cops patrolling so you should be okay. Just be alert! biggrin.gif

I was about to ask you why you're still up LOL. I'm up because I'm having problems sleeping recently. >.> Good luck on the lab exam. beerchug.gif

Couple of my friends currently go SFU, most of them are there because they didn't get into UBC. One of my friend didn't get into Sauders Commerce and the other one didn't get into UBC science.

The one that didn't get into Commerce at UBC was planning to transfer back to UBC next fall but now is saying that SFU commerce is better.....

Anyways, the real question is , why aren't you at UBC? embarassedlaugh.gif

Haha, nah I don't go to surrey campus, but I need to bus from surrey central to get home >.<. Right now i'm in Sciences but i'm not sure if I want to stick with it...

lol, I did get accepted into UBC. Both SFU and UBC. Surprisingly, high school was a breeze for me, but then my brain cells started to die off after one year in university. icon_sad.gif I chose SFU because 1. it's a bit closer to home, and 2. I heard the business administration program was better, especially their co-op program. And their cut-off for that year was actually higher than UBC's, 86% A-average.

Now everything sucks because I don't even intend to stay in business anymore. cry2.gif badteeth.gif

The sciences are even harder than business, especially when a lot of the courses involve harder math. >.< Good luck though. And it's never too late to switch, I've been here for a couple of years already. icon_sad.gif And that's why I believe I really need to change to something else. Business isn't my passion.

OMGawd, 2 more days.. *cries to death* I was sitting in my BUEC 232 lecture (3 hours!) and everyone in my row got up one by one to leave during it, making me want to go home too. But I stuck through it. icon_sad.gif Now I just have a ton of catching up to do...I doubt I can though, to be honest.

I'm going to sleep earlier tonight though. beerchug.gif

Xian, why don't you transfer to UBC then.

If you are thinking about dropping your business major, I still believe that UBC offers a more diverse selection of courses.

And btw, why did you choose business at the first place o.O? Most people that I know go into commerce not because of their passion for the world of 9-5 work, but rather, their apathy toward everything but the almighty dollar.

I am going to UBC next year to study Economics; but because I want to be a banker or the such, but rather to understand how the economy that seems to govern everything that we do in society so I can go back to China and hopefully improve it one day. Of course, I will be taking Asian study courses (only at UBC ^^) along the way and hopefully do some research work in East Asian Economy in graduate school.

If you just want a job with a steady source of income but gives you the freedom to explore your passion, perhaps you should try economics as well?? But then again, looking from your post, I guess you don't like math very much eh.... I know, I don't personally "like" math that much either, you figure that someone would be good at it when their father teaches Math at a economic specialized university ... (sigh..); if you are going into economics, you're going to need ALOT of math (I am actually thinking of double majoring math/econ right now ><'''' )

I hope you may find what's right for you, but until then, I suggest transferring to UBC ^^''
Nodrog
I think you worship UBC too much, it really isn't all that much better, lol. Sure it may have a bit more prestige world wide, but even then it's fairly unknown. embarassedlaugh.gif

Thanks for the advice and insight. beerchug.gif

You know, I'd love to start fresh at a new school. But I'm concerned about my GPA for transferring in. SFU's business program screwed it up. icon_sad.gif I did choose business right after I graduated from high school, they allowed me to declare it right away. A lot of students could actually do that. A potential high salary was the very incentive for me to go into business, but I was aiming for international trade. Because I'd love to travel and I have a strong liking towards learning languages. That's why I'm considering switching to International Relations, Communication, or Sociology.

Does UBC offer a Communication program? SFU offers a joint major in Communication and Sociology. But I think UBC's International Relations program is more well-established...

Economics is no doubt a very interesting field of study. I had to take a microeconomics as well as a macroeconomics course since I'm in business. You seem to have a really good plan laid out for yourself there, good luck with everything. beerchug.gif

I wouldn't mind studying economics as well, yeh, if only my math was a lot better. Of if I actually liked doing any sort of calculations. X_o. The theories you learn in economics are really useful and applicable to real life, not just at the workplace either. But I don't think it's my forte. A double major?! lol, sounds like a lot of work, but if it's your passion go ahead. ^_^ And your dad's a professor anyway, I'm sure he can help you out if you ever get stuck on anything lol.
LuckyRice
Well I don't really know, I guess SFU isn't THAT bad.

I just don't like it personally because of its size and the diversity of courses that it offers. Since I wanted to take courses in Asian study, UBC was pretty much my only choice since SFU did not have such a program. Plus, I just feel UBC offers a more "university" like atmosphere, because of the things listed above. I personally have been to SFU before several times, for summer camps and some tours. I don't know, just feel like that SFU is kinda.... small, more like a big college than a university lol...
As well, I am looking to take some music courses in UBC, as most people that go into Music goes to UBC and SFU only offers theory and history, but no performance opportunity. Just some of the plus for me to go to UBC...

As well, to get into UBC, your average mark only has to be about 10 percent higher than that of SFU (75% guaranteed admission for most beside commerce...) I dunno, I personally don't like hanging out with a crowd of people that got into SFU because is a university and transferred out of college so they can get a degree.... no offense. UBC just seems to offer a more sophisticated crowd in my opinion.

I know is a farther commute but I don't really mind, Where do you live anyways Xian? I live about 10 mins walk away from Metro so commute is easy for me, but then again, my parents are thinking of buying a house near surrey "stab self"

If you're interested in the courses offered in UBC, I suggest this site:

https://courses.students.ubc.ca/cs/main?pna...tname=subjareas

And this site for general information

http://www.students.ubc.ca/calendar/

Good luck!

P.S. I am actually terrible at math for someone whose father is a professor at it XD. I dunno, whenever he tries to teach stuff to me, I just can't seem to understand it for some reason, I am better off reading textbooks by myself actually....

I get half a year off as I finish all my courses this semester (end of January), I plan to earn some money, study math and chinese while I am off before I return home to PRC this summer. How did you fare in Calculus btw? I looked at the textbook and is actually not that bad, I get the concepts, but when it comes to the problems, i tend to go blank ><''

Lol, are you even in post-secondary yet? Your opinion will change...
UBC has more 'atmosphere' because SFU is more of a commuters school.
and 75% for guaranteed admission? Are you kidding me? embarassedlaugh.gif
That's for UBCO (joke school), UBC gauranteed admission is about ~86% depending on the faculty, SFU about ~82%. far from any college standards.. lol

LOL just realized you already have the "I'm better than you SFU ppl cause I'm an UBC'er" elitist attitude embarassedlaugh.gif eek.gif

I never said someone is better just because of the school they attended. I did not even have the slightest intention of inferring such claims, if you were to read my post carefully, you would realize that I said I do not like SFU as a university as a whole because of the reasons that I have listed.

As for the admission guaranteed

http://students.sfu.ca/admission/guarantee.html

Now I know that the average has changed since the last time that I checked but the guaranteed is still there

LuckyRice
Yes I did state that most people at SFU are high school slackers whose mark wasn't high enough. But that's just a generalization of the population, of course I am aware of people who goes to SFU because they want to be there due to several reasons.

Now these constitutes most of the student body, but there are also students that have high grades that went to SFU because of its high scholarships. This is another reason why i dislike SFU. A couple of years back, a professor from an US university stated how a university shouldn't have too close of a connection with big cooperation like SFU, who gets good students by offering huge scholarships from their "sponsors". Now fastforward a couple of years, the same professor decided to apply for a post at SFU, knowing his reports, the principle personally rejected his application when he had no authority to do so. A professor that goes against his own word to apply for a university that has a irrational principal, no thank you.

Because of the sponsors, SFU was able to knit a close connection with the business world to beef up its commerce program and hire better professors who likes higher salaries. Even teh TA at SFU gets paid higher than UBC because of its sponsorship money.

I in no way states that just because a person goes to UBC, he is automatically better than a person that goes to SFU, I simply stated that SFU in my opinion just seems to attract students that I personally do like hanging out with.

As for your point for guaranteed admission, show me a formal proof of your claim; of course I know if a person has over 90% average will very likely get into UBC arts, but that's for just about any university. There is no written guaranteed that a person with a certain percentage will automatically be enrolled however. There is a difference between an unspoken guaranteed and a written one.

With these said, I do admit that I think UBC is a more diverse and prestige school in terms of its courses offered and the quality of faulty, but I in know way judges a person and his/her ability solely on the place where he attains his education. Of course I will have set opinion of what to expect generally when I find out the university they attended, but how I find a person is still up to his ability to present himself. And a better University just means a better chance of a better educated person, though not always, but just statistically better
Nodrog
Lol, you're so funny.
But you really do contradict yourself way too much. Talktohand.gif
I think it's pretty retarded to say you prefer not to hang out with SFU students, if that's not UBC elitist bull$hit I don't know what is (try to remember your not even in UBC yet... lol).

Anyways, what's your opinion on UBCO, then?
Same UBC degree, except you need about a 75% average to get in to ANY faculty there.
also, with the elimination of required provincial exam components, be prepared to lose your 'highly sophisticated' UBC group.

So is everyone studying like crazy? I think I'm going insane ughhh. bawling.gif
LuckyRice
Yes I don't like hanging out with gangster and dumbass Asian kids who couldn't get into a better school and their life goal is get a 9 to 5 job so they don't have to open another book in their life again.

It seems that SFU's education is rattling your already tiny brain that couldn't manage to get a better mark in a system that only demands you to memorize the simplest of concepts. I stated that I don't judge a person on a person to person basis solely on the place where they get their education. I generalized the population yes I did, but you are missing the points of my arguments because you are unable to understand them.

There is a big difference between generalization and judging a sample of a member of that generalization and formulating an judgment about them. Perhaps they don't teach you that at SFU? Alas, that's your problem good sir, not mine.

And your points about the provincial, yes I am certainly aware of that, but dropping the provincial will make the average go UP instead of down. secondly, the whole purpose of dropping the provincial is to attract better students who have extremely high marks that tends to go to eastern universities where they don't need to take the test. All the universities in BC have been getting worse and worse students as a result of that. Thirdly, even if some lucky dumbass manage to get a pretty high mark and choose a school, which one do you think they'll go to? And the opposite is true to, if all the lucky dumb asses goes to ubc, then the even dumber dumb asses will manage to get a passable 80% and go to SFU, thus diluting the intellectual base of SFU even further. It works from the bottom up, not down.

Perhaps you should go and read my other reasons why I dislike SFU as whole instead of picking on one point that you cannot seem to understand because of your inability to understand the difference between generalization and individualism.

And plus, you just have might have given me my last reason not to go to SFU.

And for your first point; don't worry, my average right now ensures me that I will not go to SFU and meet you in the near future (this lifetime); so you don't have to worry about meeting an UBC elitist like me.

Cheers
LuckyRice
I am sure that you will ignore large part of my posts and repeat your mistake on the next post as well, pity....

Hello! Nah I'm in Psych, Crim, and Counselling...I feel like I've been in school forever. I'm gonna have so many credits by the time I graduate I feel like I should sell them off or something...

I've only taken 1 Sociology class. It was interesting but a little depressing =/.

When will you be graduating? I still have another two years to go. -3- Oh, which Sociology course did you take? It sure can get depressing, there was actually a period where I felt really crummy, but then I managed to overcome it (my TA was very encouraging lol). >_<

Hi Infatuation! Nice to still see you here. I don't usually go on AF anymore, so it's a nice coincidence to see you posting today. And congratulations!! Good job! beerchug.gif

You still remember about my UK trip! icon_redface.gif It was really nice, I made some really good friends and found out what I wanted to do once I came back to Canada. I'm now studying Communication and Sociology and really enjoy it. icon_smile.gif Although I have to say, the UK can't beat Vancouver in terms of the weather and food haha. Well...not the weather in winter, but you know. XD

Are you planning to find work right away or have you thought about travelling, etc. first? icon_smile.gif

Haha I don't come here much at all anymore either, so it was quite a nice surprise to see you reply so soon. I've already been working since I graduated, but I might travel a bit next year. Need a break from working and schooling all the time!

How's sfu treating you lately?

I live right by the bby campus and every time I go by it I so do not miss going up or down the hill in this weather.

Yeah, I know right. embarassedlaugh.gif Ah, congratulations on finding work too. I so feel you on the travelling bit! Ever since I've come back, I haven't taken a break/semester from school at all. Since I want to graduate as soon as I can. >_< My brain's so stiff these days it's not even funny lol. bawling.gif

SFU is...SFU lol. But I'm enjoying my courses and I like the profs this semester hehe. It's just that the Fall semester always sucks because it's bound to snow up there on the mountain and it's freezing cold! I have all evening classes too. T_______T

You're so lucky you no longer have to endure the sudden cancellation of classes when you're right at the foot of the mountain, or not being able to come back down because buses have stopped running, etc. XD
