The FEU Theater Guild at 70

By Rustica C. Carpio

The FEU Theater Guild is more than half a century old. In fact, it is approximately 70 years old now. Organized by actor-director Prof. Sarah Kabigting-Joaquin, the group used to rehearse and produce plays under the direction of its founder in an old building on Azcarraga Street, now Claro M. Recto, which was then already awaiting demolition to give way to the construction of Quezon Boulevard.

The guild was big; its members hardworking and dedicated. With no place to go to after the building’s demolition, Prof. Joaquin, the ever-zealous drama mentor, approached Far Eastern University’s founder and first president, Dr. Nicanor Reyes, and convinced him that they were ready to stage a play before a mature audience.

Meld academics with the appreciation of things beautiful—this was what Dr. Reyes, the art lover, did. He talked his brother-in-law Don Rafael Roces into getting a venue for the FEU Theater Guild. The latter succeeded in obtaining a place—a room in one of the theaters in Rizal Avenue owned by the Rufinos.

Issuing a memorandum to the faculty members, Dr. Reyes urged the teachers to watch the theater group’s maiden performance, Call Me, Kate. The successful presentation was to augur well for the theater group, for President Reyes promised Mrs. Joaquin that he would build a big beautiful theater for her and her theater guild.

On muddy grounds rose the Administration Building on Nicanor Reyes Street, then Morayta, and this edifice later became the center of culture and the arts in the Philippines. In the 1950s and the 1960s, numerous performances of the best in dance, drama, opera, symphonies, from contemporary to classical, creations of Filipino and foreign masters went on the boards of the FEU Auditorium which boasts of a revolving stage.

The FEU Theater Guild had among its members Eddie Ilarde who became a senator, Frankie Evangelista now a top ABS-CBN executive, Johnny Wilson who was elected Makati vice mayor, Nick Agudo, Justo Montemayor, Rustica Carpio, Butch Josue, Bert “Tawa” Marcelo, Odette Kanaan, who is now popular in movie and television circles as Odette Khan, Isabel Sevilla- Soriano, Danilo Lacuna who is Manila’s vice-mayor, Ginnie Sobrino, Pete and Dada Roa, Chito Avelino, Tony Joaquin, Joey Ang and more.

As Dean Agudo put it: “In the 1950s and l960s, one could not claim to be of the theater if he or she had not performed at the FEU Auditorium.”

Among the FEU Theater Guild’s projects were Once on This Island and a Ricky Abad translation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night under the new title Ika-Labindalawang Gabi. Recently, the guild staged The King and I by Rodgers and Hammerstein II with a mixed student-faculty cast directed by Normita Cadiz and Joey Ting, with Rustica Carpio as production supervisor and Michael Victoria as production manager.

The King and I was the President’s Committee on Culture of FEU’s contribution to the university’s diamond jubilee celebrations.

The FEU Theater Guild is almost twin to the FEU Auditorium, inspired by the credo of FEU’s founding father. To borrow the words of Dr. Lourdes Reyes-Montinola, FEU Board of Trustees Chair, in the dedication of the book “Art and Culture @Far Eastern University” (with book and jacket design by noted painter Alfredo Roces and Sylvia Roces-Montinola as editor-in-chief and production designer):

“. . . Dr. Nicanor Reyes, founder and first president of Far Eastern University whose vision and philosophies of education established a tradition of excellence not only in academics, but also in the field of art, culture and the sports.

“He prodded students to distinguish themselves in their chosen areas, but also took pride and encouraged their participation in drama, symposia, debates, the dance and musical presentations.”

:genius: FEU is once very active in these kinds of activities.
