Outdoor Growing Ethics- Originally posted by JJScorpio.

Outdoor Growing Ethics
Looking around this forum, I see a lot of new people that will be sharing their grows with us this year. I welcome all of you, and look forward to your grows. There are many people that are here to help you, so all you have to do is ask.

There are a few things that I have learned to follow over the years, and I would like to share them with you. If anyone has anything to add, please do so.

1. Be respectful of the land. The land that you are growing on should not be damaged by growers. Never destroy vegetation that you do not have to. Take the time to climb a tree to trim the branches. Do not drop the tree because it is easier for you. Even a small tree has taken 30 years to grow. It's not our rights to destroy them. There is also no need to cut down bushes because it may be easier to get to your plot. That could be home to an animal, birds or insects.

2. Pick up your garbage. It may be as little as a fertilizer bag or a plastic water jug. Make sure you take out anything you bring in. Also don't be afraid to pick up something that is not yours. Karma will thank you for the time you have taken.

3. Never maim or kill an animal. This is their homes that we are going into. Most animals are curious of what you are doing, and if they do hurt your plants, it is not on purpose. A deer may chew one up or step on one accidentally or a skunk/coon/fox will always be curious of fresh, bare soil and may dig in it. This does not give you the right to kill them. Normally if you do not add things to the soil to make an animal dig, and you cage your plants when they are young, you will lose very few. Use these animals to your advantage. A group of birds that all of a sudden lift off, or a deer bolting tells you someone or something is around. Heed the warning. The same applies to a grazing deer or a fox hunting rodents. This tells you no one is around and you are safe.

4. Never booby trap your grow. If a human gets a fishhook stuck into them or broken bones, Leo will be around to investigate. On top of that, every outdoor grower will be labeled as a violent, money hungry thug. The good things that you do will always go unnoticed, but the bad things that you do will always be magnified by the press and the next person busted for growing will be treated as an example. We do not have the right to hurt people. There will always be thieves, and Karma will get them in its own time.

5. Leave the quality of the ground you use equal to or better than you found it. At the end of the season, remove your old roots, turn it over and add some dried manure, peat or a handful of fertilizer. This will not only bring back up nutrition levels for future growth, but if you decide to use it next year, you have a good start preparing the soil. Always remove your screens and pull up all stakes you use. An animal can be injured by either of these and it tips people off to someone growing.

Lets get into the meat of the subject shall we?..............

Photoperiod
The first thing to cover here is Photoperiod- Photoperiod is the ammount of time there is light in a 24 hour period. In Cannabis growing, Photoperiod is typically shown like this- 12/12 or 16/8, or 18/6, etc. The first number is usually the length of the lighted period, the second shows the balance of the 24 hours that is dark.
Outdoors the sun controls the Photoperiod. Its length changes through the seasons according to the movements of the sun in the sky, a matter of fact it causes the change in seasons. This brings us to......
Photoperiodism
Photoperiodism is the reaction of many flowering plants(including Cannabis) to changes in Photoperiod. Plants that experience Photoperiodism have pigment cells called Phytochrome that monitor the ammounts of light being absorbed by the plants(specificly the red end of the spectrum), and the length of day. Signals from the Phytochrome tell the plant to do many things, including to grow, bloom, and in the case of some trees, to loose their leaves and go dormant in Autum.

Most of these plants fall into three catergories concerning blooming times, that being- long day plants(blooms as day gets longer), short day plants(blooms as day gets shorter), and day neutral plants(blooming is not according to light cycles).
All Cannabis varieties are either "Short day", plants or "Auto-flowering" (known as "Day neutral" outside of the Cannabis community). So called "Auto-flowering" plants do not seem to take their blooming cues from the sun, and thus should be considered "Day neutral", as most seem to be geneticly programmed to bloom according to age insted.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sun, Latitude, and why the same plants finish different times at different points on the globe

The year as we know it is basicly the time it takes for the Earth to make a complete loop around the sun. As the Earth makes this loop it shifts on its axis, so that either the northern half or southern half(Hemispheres) have the longer photoperiod.

The shortest day of the year is called the Winter Solstice, this day occurs on December 21st in the northern half of the world, on the same day in the southern hemisphere they will have their Summer solstice, the longest day of the year. On June 21s it will be reversed, with the longest day of the year in the north(Summer solstice), and the shortest day in the south(Winter solstice).

Two days of the year are known as the equinoxes, one occurs March 21st and one on September 21st. These days represent the halfway point between the longest and shortest days of the year, on these days the day length is almost exactly 12/12 all over the world. If you are in the Northern hemisphere, Mar. 21 is the first day of Spring and September is the first day of Autum, reverse these dates in the southern hemisphere.

Latitude
Latitude is the east-west lines you see on a globe or map of the earth, they are spaced about every 111 Kilometers starting at 0 degrees at the Equator, and graduating north and south from there (every 111 KM) to the north pole(90 Degrees North) and South pole(90 Degrees south).

Here is a link to Wikpedia explaining Latitude-

Latitude

At the Equator the length of day doesn't change much from month to month, at both Solstices the length of day is about 12 hours, at both Equinoxes it is about 12 hours, almost perpetual 12/12.

Now lets take a look at Portland Oregon, this city sits near 45.4° N, which is about exactly halfway between the Equator(O°) and the North pole(90°N).
At the Winter solstice, the length of day is 8h 41m, at Summer solstice the day length is 15h 41m, and at the Equinoxes it is 12h 12m.

And now lets look at Anchorage Alaska, this city sits at 61.2° N, a little over 2/3 of the way to the North pole(90° N) from the Equator(0°).
At the Winter Solstice the day length is 5h 27m, at Summer solstice the day length is 19h 22m, and the Equinoxes are 12h 18m.

As you move away from the equator(either north or south), you see more distictness between the seasons and the length of days during those seasons.
Generally the closer you are to the Equator, the less difference there is between the length of day on the Solstices(the longest and shortest days of the year.
The further you are from the Equator, the more difference there is in length of day between the Solstices, making the Summer shorter and shorter, and the longest day of the year longer and longer the further you go from the eternal 12/12 of the Equator.

Here are the Latitudes for a few North American, European and Australian cities to show a example of the vast differences in latitude-

Darwin, Australia-12.4° S
Miami, Florida-25.8° N
Houston, Texas-29.7° N
Los Angeles, California-34.1° N
Atlanta, Georgia-33.9° N
Canberra, Australia-35.3° S
San Francisco, California-37.8° N
Reno, Nevada-39.5° N
Naples, Italy-40.8° N
Chicago, Illinois- 41.9° N
Boston, Massachusetts-42.4° N
Toronto, Ontario-43.6° N
Ottawa, Ontario-45.3° N
Seattle, Washington-47.6° N
Vienna, Austria-48.2° N
Vancouver, British Columbia-49.2° N
Calgary, Alberta-51.1° N
Warsaw, Poland-52.2° N
Amsterdam, Netherlands-52.3°
Edmonton, Alberta-53.3° N
Anchorage, Alaska-61.2° N

The Photoperiod sensitive strains of Cannabis are each geneticly programmed to start blooming when day shortens to a certain length*.
When these various strains are bred, they become acclimated to that latitudes photoperiod, they are bred to bloom and harvest before that areas climate becomes too cold and dark(or wet), usally to avoid major mold problems, or harsh freezing weather.
*Many experts agree that it is actually the length of the dark period that matters to plants.

When you take a plant that was bred in one location, and move it to a similar Latitude, say from 42° N to 43° N the plant should harvest at nearly the same time. But if you take a plant from 42° N to 50° N, its possible that the plant may not harvest early enough to beat Winter further up north.

Organic Soil Mixes for outdoors and indoor grow

1.60% ProMix HP + Mike
30% perlite
10% worm castings for micros and BB

To each gallon of this mix I add:

2 TBS/gal dolomite lime
1 TBS/gal blood meal
2 TBS/gal bone mean for P (flowering mix only)
1 TBS/gal kelp meal

The most important step is now to compost your soil mix for 2 weeks before using it, you want to wet the mix to create an environment where the beneficials in the soil start munching on the soil elements and creating a stable environment with some nutes ready to go for a well rooted clone.
I use LiquidKarma for a wetting mix @ 1TBS per gallon (some B1 goods right there ), as instructed by the wise ones.

I use Mike with every transplant, i transplant 3 times and flower in 5 gallon pails.
I feed a microbial tea every watering with no nutes just EWC, LK, and molasses, to me this is a base.
I use a stong N tea once towards end of veg and a strong P tea about 3 weeks into flowering every 2nd or 3rd watering until about 10 days before harvest.
I use liquid seaweed lightly and regularly as K is essential throughout and as a bonus over other mineral sources of K kelp is rich in growth hormone and micros.

UNK:
Start by pouring a gallon of potting mix onto a potting bench. Add 1 tablespoon each of blood meal for nitrogen, kelp for trace elements, and greensand for potassium; then add 2 tablespoons of bone meal for phosphorus. Mix it all together and you're ready to plant.

TICKS:
Basically Organic mix with ProMix HP as a base. The ratios used for mixing are 50 Litres of Promix combined with with 25-35% wormcastings, 15% Shrimp compost, 750 ml of Bat guano and a cup of Bone & Blone meals. This renders aboot 85-95 Litres of grow mix.

SUPER SOIL MIX:
Original Recipe, as it was given to me.

1 Bale sunshine mix #2 or promix
2 L Bone Meal - phosphorus source
1 L Blood Meal - nitrogen source
1 1/3 cups Epsom salts - magnesium source
3-4 cups dolmite lime -calcium source & pH buffering
1 tsp fritted trace elements
1/2 - 1 bag chicken manure (steer, mushroom, etc) - nitrogen & trace
elements

- Mix thoroughly, moisten, and let sit 1-2 weeks before use.

Revised Recipe, after several failures due to bad manure sources, I now use the following recipe. Results have been excellent and the clones seem to take off right away instead of having a slow growing settling in period.

1 Bale sunshine mix #2 or promix (3.8 cu ft)
8 cups Bone Meal - phosphorus source
4 cups Blood Meal - nitrogen source
1 1/3 cups Epsom salts - magnesium source
3-4 cups dolomite lime -calcium source & pH buffering
1 tsp fritted trace elements
4 cups kelp meal.
9kg (25 lbs) bag pure worm castings

- Mix thoroughly, moisten, and let sit 1-2 weeks before use.

Substitutions

- The original recipe was a success, but I simply needed to experiment. In addition, sometimes not all ingredients were always available. Therefore, here are some possible additions and/or substitutions:

Blood & Bone Meal - when trying to cut costs
Kelp Meal - contains over 62 trace minerals. Good supplement for reducing the manure content to speed availability of soil.
Worm castings - excellent source of micro nutrients.
Bat guano - excellent for top dressing a week into flowering.
Seabird guano

BOGS - Feeding and Mix
I use Wal-Mart Continuous Feeding formula potting soil with 5-10% perlite added for aeration and drainage. I add 2 cups of bone and blood meal to every 10 gallons of soil. I feed Pure Blend grow in veg and I transplant 3 times. Starting in 1 qt pots then 2 gallon pots then 4 gallon pots.

I transplant to 4 gallon pots when going to flowering. At this time I give a strong dose of foxfarm bloom liquid bat guano product, 2/3 cup to a gallon. This is a one time heavy nitrogen feed as transplanted and going into high light flowering room. (all HPS 35 watts/sq.ft.)

Often I let them flower until sexed before the final transplant and nitrogen treatment. It doesn't burn them and they shoot in the first 2 weeks of flowering a lot. Capturing this growth "shoot" as I call it is the key to big buds IMHO. Health and vigor is maintained by lots of continued rooting through flower.

I also use some CO2 in flowering and some superthrive once or twice while in flower at a very weak rate. In flower I feed the first half of flowering with Pure Blend Bloom which has half strength nitrogen compared to their vegging formula. Then the second half of flowering I use Earth juice Bloom to feed as it has no nitrogen and my pots still have some.

SubCool taught me to premix my earth juice bloom 20 hours in advance to reduce its acidity and this has helped me feed more without burning them.

My Basic Tips... BUSHY’S GROW TIPS FOR BEGINNER INDOOR GARDENERS -- By BushyOlderGrower updated 5/2001
Soil Mix is easy get Sam’s Choice, Magic Earth with fertilizer (.09-.06-.05) in already and mix 2/3 cup of blood meal and 2/3 cup of bone meal into each 3 gal pot. By adding 2 tablespoons of dry lime to mix you help flowering and avoid over-acidity. Wal-Mart has this kind and it is cheap! Many prefer to use 5 gallon pots. You should add 10% perlite for good air to the roots and good drainage.

Stir and plant seed into this, fill pot well and wet well first time, we will supplement with organic fertilizers later. Black Gold is best gro mix but heavier soils are better than lighter ones. Shultz pro mix is expensive but highly recommended, Black Magic has also done well for some expert growers. I like Wal-mart continuous feeding formula soil

GROWDOCS SOIL MIX:
Per 100 liters/2 bags
60 gram seaweed meal
60 gram bone meal
120 gram blood meal
80 gram Guano Peru
20 gram trace element
40 gram lime/kalk
3 liter worm casting
12 liter Perlite

YouMuDoIsWeak soil preperation guide and mix

Living in Northeast Florida and in the Southeastern United States we have two major concerns when it comes to outdoor guerrilla growing clay like soil and high alkalinity because of the fact we have so many pine tree's in the area to off set this i have made several measures.
-Pre Dig my plots in the winter i dig a 1.5 foot wide 2 foot deep hole and i replace 2/3 of the soil with my own premade mixture
-I Use dolomite to increase acidity of the soil

To keep away animals i piss around my grows to mark my territory you can laugh but some one who has been growing longer than i have been born told me this trick and i never had a problem with animals eating my plants.

My soil mix is as follows and makes 20 gallons of soil mix
2 Cups Dolomite
2 Cups Bone Meal
2 Cups Blood Meal
2 Cups Fish Emulsion
10 gallons of Soil
10 gallons of Compost
10 Cups of Perlite
5 Cups spaughaun moss

i can fill 10 plots for ten plants with this mix and in all honesty i do not have to fertilize at all until harvest.

Yes.
An intresting one is ducksfoot.
Which has fan leaves that look like ducks feet.

Their are alos various mutations out their in clone form that have intresting charecteristics.
How "different" do you want your plant?

Where i live growing outdoors isnt too efficient and im too poor to afford the materials for indoor setups, so im just a user like the many others out there.

Has anyone tried the special Oreo snack (double stuffed cookies)? where you hollow out the center of the icing filling of the cookie and put it some melted mixed THC butter prep and then put the oreo cookie back together, put in in fridge for 20 min and done. takes about 10-20 cookies and an hours wait for it to get the slightest effect but taste soo good! haha.

best strains i ever had here was some gorilla kush, blueberry headies, and Californian train wreck. kinda curious to strains out there more west!? any popular commercial brand recommendations. possibly Sativa, no more indicas (too many indicas)! icon_sad.gif

I only made brownies with cannabutter.
Fox Tail Sativa, Mandala has some near sativa gear that I can not wait to try out, Breeders Choice has some awesome landrace and heirloom sativas.

I grew Citrocity before and it was quite good. But the best smoke i personally grew and burned was an awesome pheno of mexibag hybridized with citrocity. It was like smoking weed for the first time and gave you uncontrollable giggles good to smoke with some girls.

No bad cannabutter is butter with weed in it.
How i make cannabutter is get some land o lakes butter usually use 3 sticks for an ounce some say two others say 4 but i say fu-k it three is good.

Bring some water to a boil i eyeball and use about the same amount of water i would for ramen noodles, i let it boil then add the butter then i add the weed and let it boil for five more minutes stirring constantly. after that i let simmer for a while about 10-15 minutes stirring occasionally.

then i strain but the mixture in a bowl and let it sit in the fridge for a while then bam the butter seperates from the watter and i got some greenish brown funky looking butter, good for anything like toast to baking.

Hemp line by the Body Shop lol

Hemp is the most useful plant i have ever seen. Grows fast and about anywhere, and used in many applications already haha. JUST because its illegal it makes it hard to harvest.

Imagine a world where cannabis is legal and taxed for use and Hemp replaces a bunch of things we use already. (hemp shirts are said to last longer than cotton ones). save the economy maybe? haha. only in a stoner fantasy

As long as they allow you to grow it like they allow you brew your own beer I would be fine with it. If they regulated it and taxed it like Tobacco or Alchohol screw it.
