Slumdog Millionaire hasn't released in the UK yet (even though it's a British production), but now that the movie is at #45 in the IMDB Top 250, I'll definately need to check this movie out when it does release next week.
By the way, has anyone here seen the British teen comedy drama "Skins"? It has the same lead actor playing a goofy horny teenage boy, the complete opposite to his role in Slumdog Millionaire.

Duh an Indian boy playing a Paki will obviously get a dork role in a British show, hero role in an Indian movie.

It wasn't just him, but most of the other characters in Skins were also dorks. Also, it's unlikely a skinny boy like him could have ever gotten a hero role in a Bollywood movie. Bollywood heroes almost always have buffed-up bodies, but that's not what Danny Boyle was looking for when casting for Slumdog Millionaire. He was looking for someone who looks like a loser, and that's exactly what he found when he saw Dev Patel's character in Skins (which apparently is similar to his own personality in real life).

Yeah they would not pick any of the White dork friends for Jawal's character. There are not that many brown actors, a skinny guy like him is a nondescript common look.

I've finally got around to watching Slumdog Millionaire at my local cinema earlier today. The movie was very discomforting to watch at times (especially when the going gets tough for Jamal and Latika), but it was also very inspiring when Jamal managed to overcome all those obstacles.
Almost all the performances were great. Dev Patel was convincing enough as Jamal that I almost forgot he used to to play that goofy Anwar from Skins, and the guy who played Salim was also impressive, not to mention Anil Kapoor as the host. Freida Pinto was also pretty good as Latika but she didn't have much more to her role besides being a love interest. However, the real stars of the show were the child actors portraying Jamal, Salim and Latika (both the young child and early teenage versions). Since some of these child actors were actual Mumbai slum kids in real life, that probably explains why their performances were so convincing.
Overall, it's my favourite movie of the year and probably one of the most inspiring (and at the same time discomforting) movies this decade. Judging by the movie's performance at the Golden Globes, it will probably dominate the BAFTAs and OSCARs as well.

i know i'm kinda late, but I just saw it, thoroughly enjoyed it.
The actress is beautiful.
But for some reason...I don't think it was that great of a movie. I liked it and everything, but I think maybe because the story is too perfect and there is no universal lesson or something. It was predictable.
Also, I see why his brother had to die in the bathtub. Why couldn't he have just left?

Well, the Brother is something of an "Anti-hero"... he always prevent or destroy the happiness of Jamal... think of it as an act of redemption.

Of course the story does have a universal message: hope. The movie shows that there is always hope in even the most bleakest of circumstances. It shows that no matter how overwhelming the odds, you can still succeed if you have the will.
As for the bathtub scene, if Salim decided to make a run for it instead, then that gangster Javed would still be after him, while Jamal and Latika would also be at risk. The only way for Jamal and Latika to live in peace is to take out Javed, but that wouldn't have been possible unless Salim was willing to sacrifice himself in the process.

Actually, it is believable for an uneducated Mumbai slum kid to speak English.
Check out Ravi the "Lingo Kid", a real uneducated Mumbai slum boy who can speak many different languages:

^ That "Lingo Kid" should start working as a professional translator/interpreter, instead of selling peacock feathers for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, talent alone just isn't enough for slum kids.
20 years ago, there was a 1988 movie by Mira Nair called "Salaam Bombay" which cast a real slum kid called Shafeeq Syed as the leading child actor. The movie won many international awards, was nominated for an Oscar, and that slum kid even won a Best Actor award in India. Despite this, the kid went back to being a beggar on the streets of Bombay and then finally found work as a rickshaw driver as an adult. It looks like even a Best Actor award didn't make a difference to his life.
Who knows if the same thing will happen to the slum kids cast in Slumdog Millionaire?

I watched the film pretty late..not when it first came out... but wow..what a great film. Started off a lil slow..but once they give you glimpses of each character...you begin to relate/feel for them. Some points of the film i feel sorry for the dude...because of his relationship with Latika. Overall..A+ film..and i LOVE the ending, it shows theres still movies that end good and brings hope.

^true, but at times...i feel the suspense was pretty cool, like with the scenes of dude and latika..pretty frustrating. id say my fav scene though was when they were kids, and the best friend was getting latika from the evil boss with the Colt 45 revolver.
