Whether you're an indoor warrior, or a marthon runner, let's get together share stories and concerns.
I an avid runner, running helped me with my problems and it keeps me charging. Nowadays though, my problem is not my muscles its my joints. My knees sometimes feel like they're about to burst.

the best run i ever did was this half-marathon amongst rhinos and elephants in Lewa Downs, Kenya

I run on dirt and trails, but it's not really smart. You can't run when you've got a sprain or fracture. Be safe now you can run more tommorrow.

I got an exercise bike over the winter but I feel like I should of got a treadmill instead.
Its really hard for me to do jog during the winter. Something about the cold that makes me want to stay in. But once spring hits i plan on using one of these on the trail.

i think by running on dirt tracks, u build up the agility of the ankles and heels in such a way u dont get sprains that easily.. running on asphalt all yr life means u'll sprain the minute you hit the dirt tracks..
here's the all time best running shoes in africa.. Masai rubber shoes, made out of recycled tyres that have burst... the masais can run, jump and walk for miles in these rubber tyres like no man can :

yeah they make good running shoes. i like asics though, usually cheaper and simpler. plus i've had used a couple of asics before. i gotta buy a new one.

I only hear good thing about asics, my nike trainers are terrible. nike seriously make the worst shoes from what i bought (football and trainers) i might get some asics next time around.
speaking of nike products, has anyone tried the nike+ipod? i hear its fu-king genius, i'm planning to buy one

BirdFeed
Feb 15 2009, 11:22 PM
it only works with the ipod.. but it also only works with ipod nanos too so thats the downside of the product.. but the features are great, you even get to choose a "pump up" song to push yourself. after your done with your workout, you can upload your results on the website and compare against others

i think they had an ipod to go with a vibrator, now they have an ipod to go with the shoees??
BirdFeed
Feb 18 2009, 07:33 AM
yeah it was meant to go with the nike shoes cos basically u need to put the transmitter in the sole of the shoe in order to record the data on the ipod. but there are plenty of ways to go around that if u dont want the nike shoes (secure it thru the lace, velcro etc..) and it works fine. nike found that they were selling much more nike+ipod rather than the shoes themselves

They need to make one for 3rd party mp3 players, like creative or iriver or iaudio. They'd earn more money that way.

I didn't either until recently. Ill-fitting shoes = metatarsalgia.

I started running 3 months ago and I too feel as if my knees are going to burst. As of right now, I can only run 3 miles but right when I start running, my knees start to hurt. Does anyone else have this problem? If so then do you just roll with the punches or do you have methods of fixing it? 3 miles isn't very long and I stretch for at least 10-15 min prior to running. I do have running shoes but they only keep my feet from hurting (used to run with basketball shoes).

i do on the occasion when i don't feel like replacing my shoes with a new pair. i just take out the insoles and replace them with dr.scholls sports gel? it's a blue gel insert. i like it! great cushioning.
dimsum, are you overweight? if you just started running then you should start at a low mileage and work your way up. if you are overweight, then losing it will probably help dramatically.
i'm an avid runner and right now i am training for the 26.2 for a race in oct. i have certain days or weeks when my right knee is extremely in pain and i just cross train and reduce my mileage during that time until i recover. swimming, biking/cycling, weight training are great during the off days.
as for shoes, i prefer new balance and asics. don't know about mizunos...

What if you don't have an ipod?
nike and apple have paired up so that one of their products can't be used without the other partner's product, which leads consumers to purchase both without a choice. if you want to use the nike+ foot pod then you inevitably have to go out and buy an ipod. they do a better job at marketing their product too so people aren't aware of the fact that there are other foot pods out there in the market where the purchase of a specific mp3 brand isn't necessary since they haven't partnered up with another company. Suunto, Polar, Garmin, etc. have foot pods that come with their GPS or heart-monitor watches. They can be pretty pricey but the more inexpensive ones are a lot cheaper then purchasing the nike foot pod + ipod + nike shoes(optional) combo if you don't even need an ipod in the first place and would prefer to have a heart rate monitor + GPS function.

Depends - what kind of surface are you running on?
During high school my problems were more with my shins, but I would get a bit of knee trouble too because I did high jump, long jump, and hurdles when I wasn't doing cross country (jumping + repetition = teh suck). It wasn't so bad if I ran on grass, or even trails in the woods if the dirt was a little soft. For track we'd run on roads a lot so the only choice was to ice up any problem areas till they felt numb, stretch, do a warm-up jog for fifteen minutes (we did it for XC too), stretch again, and hope the workout wouldn't be too bad.

Try running a little slower and or a little shorter until your knees get a little stronger (ligaments). try rotating your knees before running to get some synovial fluid going around the joints. try better shoes, i think this problem, which i share, is due to hard surface and the impact of legs that are not use to running (as you get better your legs get more efficient and the impact of the surface is a lot less)
to gabba, wow long jumps eh. i saw your pics and i can tell you're a runner. you still run?
i got a bad fascial injury but i can't stop running, i just can't but i know i got slow down or it's not going to go away.
i found this great site about runners injury i hope y'all benefit from it as i did.
