I was reading a post by another poster and it got me thingking. Besides ceramonial and religouse use etc. Is the sarong a dying garment, most if us here represent the newer generation. What are your thoughts regarding the sarong? Is it for you, or is it not. Do you already use one regularly.

Ladies, your man in a sarong, a turn on or a turn off.

Of course to sarong! For me of course. : D

It's a very convenient piece of cloth, and my family often buys those cheap, good-quality Indonesian sarong from the Serikin market to give to my relatives in Baram. My mother uses a sarong before changing into proper clothes. I don't wear sarongs that much as I want to, but I often bring one with me when I go for camps etc. And I love those beautiful patterns on it.

It's a pity if the sarong would die away. So aesthetic, and yet so utilitarian.

Hmm man in a sarong. The only men I see wearing a sarong would be the Malays and dancers (though I think the preference for songket in performance is higher). Both use the sarong in different ways. It's not a turn off nor a turn on for me. In fact, I don't feel anything. embarassedlaugh.gif

I think a woman in a sarong only can be quite sexy. I assume though that women would not wear a sarong as daily wear as a home garment, simply something she wears when going from the bathroom to her room before changing.

I think from my point of view a sarong would be too "liberating" laugh.gif

Yeah, I think it's a shame that people nowadays just don't wear sarong any longer. Maybe if we find a way to make it a trendy item to wear in everyday urban life?
I think a lot of people in Myanmar still wear sarong (longyi) in everyday life. Am I right, Zaw Gyi?

I use to wear Sarong at home, it is more to Kain Palaikat. Feel more comfortable wearing it than wearing trousers or pants.

i think in places like cambodia , laos and thailand alot of provincial women still wear the female version ( AFAIK tied in the same way that we do in Burma ) but very few men still wear sarongs . In southern Laos , central Thailand and Cambodia for males and females it was mainly the sampot anyway which is more like a folded dhoti .

In SOuth Thai region we call Sarong as Pathung. Also we use Pathung as the loin-cloth tied around waist.

Way of tying a Kain Pelekat (Sarong worn by men)

Kelantan Chinese folks wearing Kain Batik (Sarong)

Sarong history can be traced back here since Srivijaya time. I read something in my cousin school textbook about Srivijaya.

As we see from sonofgunongjerai's pics, is it safe to say that only old folks wear sarong in everyday life nowadays? icon_sad.gif

In Indonesia, I think Bali is the only place where people (young and old, women and men) could wear sarong, in everyday life, in the urban areas, without being perceived as weird.

In the rest of Indonesia, however, you could only see people wearing sarong whenever they go to Mosque or in special occasions (such as in religious holidays, festivals, weddings, and other traditional events).

Of course Indonesian designers are still trying to encourage sarong-wearing:

I hope to visit Bali one day, it is a beautiful Island with traditional culture being preserved as Holy and Sacred!!! I think it could be amazing if we can wear Sarong like in Bali or in Myanmar while undergo our routine. It is convenient and we can just flip the Sarong front edge and slip it behind at the waist so it could be like a trouser, I mean like Sompoth.
