I been looking into a lot of classical instrument lately and this particular intrument caught my attention. I noticed this piece of instrutment is widely used in Thailand. But then I noticed that the Khmer also have the same instrument. So it got me thinking, was this instrument part of the Khmer royal court that the Thai(Siamese) adopted?

The raneak comes from the Mahori ensamble.

Khmer Mahori and its Thai counterpart, the intruments. names of the intruments are alike, the only difference are the musicians and the compositions.

Khmer Mahori is alway grander, the flow is more harmonius, and Thai Mahori sounds a bit irratic.

It was originally a Chinese instrument. The Tai people adopted this instrument and migrated from China to Southeast Asia where they teached the Khmer to play the Khim.

khmer instrument is a mixture of native khmer & khmer modified foreign instruments. some khmer like the khmer essan have adopted the lao khaen. over 2000 years ago traders from india & china came to cambodia. they introduced their musical instruments to local khmer. khmer folks modified them & played them to suit khmer music. when khmer were hindu/brahman we played khmer modified indian instruments to perform hindu base religious dances, rituals etc....

k'ang t'ai was a chinese ambassador to nakor panom ( funan) in some of his chinese court documents. it's noted that in 263ad a group of khmer musicians from nakor panom (funan) visited china. the chinese emperor was so impressed he ordered the establishment of an institution for khmer music near nanking. khmer music back in those days must of been some good stuff to impress the chinese emperor. biggthumpup.gif

@Umm2008, thanks for Paktai song, that's cool!!!

Some musical instruments historians in our country said that old school Pi Nai was originated from Syria before introduced in India and brought into SEA. Old school Pi Nai was used in Kedah, which is my hometown, the people there then modified it into Northern School Pi Nai which resemble the Kelantan Pi Nai but slightly short.

Pipa was originally musical instruments of Barbarians brought into China from Central Asia I think. Khim seems like Pipa.

Muaythai also use this similar kind of instrument we called it Pee Chava( Pee Java) and Grong Kheag( Indian drum). Did you use that in Punjak Srirat, too? I'm interested.

Oh yes, we use them in both martial art, Muaythai and Penjak Silat. We also use them in Nang Thalung, Mak Yong and Me Mulong theater as well. Those instruments only used in Kedah and Kelantan Penjak Silat but not in Indonesian Penjak Silat, Indonesian Penjak Silat is prominent in Southern States of Malaysia. They use Gamelan, and their music style is different. Grong Kheag we call it as Gandang Khling, yes it is Indian drum.

Here are Javanese Musical Instruments (Gamelan) and their Niyogo (Drummers), they use to play those instruments in their Penjak Silat, Shadow Play (Wayang), and other traditional and ritual dances.
