I'm American too. You might not want to go to South Korea. There are too many North sympathizers. They'll probably insult you (since your the enemy you know.) But we all should be brave but don't count on a totally warm welcome.

Yeah, but Asians complain all the time on these forums. But yeah it's whiny but you know Koreans whine all the time when I'm there. Some of it's due to bad teaching (but sometimes I make good impressions) but sometimes from total strangers. I don't b!tch and complain about pay, culture, food, people etc.. when I'm in Korea.

So I'll be a man about it. But I wish Koreans would be a man about it too and quit whining and holding grudges. Isn't that fair?

When Koreans are complaining they do so because they have some REASONS.
Americans just whine because they are no superstars in Korea like in Japan.

My failure as a teacher comes probably from depression. If I could get that inner glow going then I can make connections with students. Otherwise, I make a bad impression and the student's lose respect.
Bottom line is that students think I'm weak minded because I can't get that inner glow of self confidence going. Sometimes I make the connections but only when I'm really happy. It takes an extra amount of confidence with middle school students because they're difficult (especially the girls).

For example, David Letterman was criticized for making an insulting remark to Sarah Palin. O.K. why should he have to be fired for his free speech? If is punished for free speech then why can't everybody be punished? Why can't those Koreans who do Bin Laden insults get sued by Americans for harrassment? Why can't Koreans sue blacks and whites who call them the G or C word?

Now let's move on to harsher racism besides insults? How about the school nerd who was beat up everyday? Should he sue this former classmates for bullying? Obviously we cannot sue for insults but perhaps actual beatings would justify a lawsuit. Should the nerd just forget about it and "take it like a man"?

I don't know about most people being racist. Probably people don't care about Asians that much. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way. It's you know Koreans probably don't care about Africans that much. You could only say that people are racist if they harass Koreans. If they ignore Koreans then they're probably not racist. For example, people in Nebraska probably ignore Koreans because they're not many there.

Now in Los Angeles you encounter real racism. So perhaps you are using the people of Los Angels to represent all Americans. That's not a good way to look at the population.

Now if you consider Americans who are right wing as racist against Koreans then that's different. For example, you might despise Americans if you thought they supported sanctions against North Korea. But I would disagree with that assessment but I won't get into that right now.

What do you mean by "better than you"? Obviously, a non-racist Korean is better than a racist person from another race. But if the Korean is racist then he is in the same boat as the non-Korean racists.

But no I'm not that sensitve about being called white trash or whatever. The remarks about 9/11 are hard to take but you know iv'e ignored it before. I wonder if most Americans could turn the other cheek. How much could they take. But then again Koreans are generally nice, hospitiable people.

I think that some Americans and others want to have thier #ss kissed when they go to other nations. They demand attention form locals. But people generally will ignore you and I'm fine with that. I believe Whites, Blacks and Spanish are far worse than Koreans.

Well, you can generalize races sometimes and still be fair to individuals. For example, young black males who join gangs generally don't have a father. Why don't they have a father? Because black men are bad parents. They leave thier wives and that's just pathetic. So is it racist to say that? Also black people don't want to study and wonder why they don't succeed. So it's all not discrimination from whites. But I do think whites have unfair access to employment etc. But blacks can get into college and do something if they want.

It has nothing to do with genetics but a culture that's hostile to learning and family responsiblity.
I can also say that a lot of white americans go to poor schools and their parent's hold them up to high standards.

Thats exactly what is true for whites.
They are racist because they are taught by their parents that whites are and have always been evil.
So they grow up believing it is normal and a fact and simply act in this way.

For Koreans it is the other way round. Most are hard working, superior intelligent, polite people.
But that does not mean that some ugly foreigners like Whites,Blacks or Latinos can come across our way
thinking they can in any way harm us.

Exactly, so Koreans will shout "Bin Laden" or say "fu-k You" to the first mild mannered ESL teacher they see (especially if he's an American). I bet if you all ever actually encountered an agressive American GI or Latino etc.. then you'd run away like a bunch of cowards.

Anyoung Haseyo! I am an American, too. After reading some of these posts, I can see there are some misconceptions on both sides. I have a Korean fiance from Taechon, and she tells me a lot about what life is like there, as well as what Koreans there are like, too.
I have never been to Korea, although I would like to go. I would not want to be mistaken for the "drunken GI" type of American. Whether or not being an American would make me a target remains to be seen, although I think that is as likely as an Asian being a target when he/she is caught by some rascist Americans.
Let's resolve to clear up myths and misunderstandings! I really like the Koreans I have met so far, and would like to learn more about them.

I have yet to meet a racist person, regardless of their own race or the target of their hatred, that did not also look down on a large part of their own race.

By definition a racist is judgemental to a fault, rude and largely ignorant. It has nothing to do with their nationality or race. Its a general human mental defect.
