Phimai historical park, Nakorn Ratchasima

A khmer temple in Phimai district.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phimai_historical_park

The Phimai historical park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand. It is located in the town of Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The temple marks one end of the Ancient Khmer Highway from Angkor. As the enclosed area of 1020x580m is comparable with that of Angkor Wat, Phimai must have been an important city in the Khmer empire. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple, as Buddhism in the Khorat area dated back to the 7th century. Inscriptions name the site Vimayapura (which means city of Vimaya), which developed into the Thai name Phimai.

The first inventory of the ruins was done in 1901 by the French geographer Etienne Aymonier. They were put under governmental protection by announcement in the Government Gazette, Volume 53, section 34, from September 27, 1936. Most of the restorations were done from 1964 to 1969 as a joint Thai-French project. The historical park, now managed by the Fine Arts Department, was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 12, 1989.

Wat Chamthewi, Lampoon

http://wikimapia.org/8741612/Wat-Chamthewi

Wat Chamthewi or Wat Ku Kut (วัดจามเทวี หรือ วัดกู่กุด), commonly referred to a Ku Kut (กู่กุด), is located on the Lamphun-San Pa Tong Road and built in 1298 B.E. in the Lawo (Lopburi) style. The Chedi is a square structure similar to Buddhagaya in India. Around the Chedi are levels of arches holding a total of 60 Buddha statues. Ashes of the queen are enshrined within the Chedi.

Wat Chedi Liam, Chiangmai

The most interesting feature of this wat is the chedi. It was built around 1288 by King Mangrai who actually copied the Mon style chedi at Wat Ku Kut. It is square in design, with five tiers rising to a pyramid shape. Buddha images stand in the niches on each tier, each tier having a different pose of Buddha. The chedi was restored in 1908 with additions of a Burmese spire and Burmese chinthe on its four corners.

Wat Umong, Chiangmai

Wat Umong (complete name: Wat Umong Suan Puthatham) is a 700 year old Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is located against the mountains of Doi Suthep and is south of Chiang Mai University.

Wat Umong is unique in that the resident monks live in a very natural setting, and occasionally feed the deer that live in the area. There are tunnels with Buddhist images below the chedi which can be easily explored. Signs and saying hang from the trees on footpaths leading to the small lake where fish and turtles can be fed.

Note: There is a temple with a similar name within the old city moat of Chiang Mai, whose complete name is "Wat Umong Maha Thera Chan".

Wat Chet Yot, Chiang Mai

http://www.sacred-destinations.com/thailan...at-chet-yot.htm

Wat Chet Yot (also Wat Jet Yod or Wat Maha Photharam) is an elegant 15th-century temple set in peaceful and green grounds northwest of the walled city of Chiang Mai.

Wat Chet Yot was built by King Tilokkarat in 1453 to host the Eighth World Buddhist Council. His remains are in one of the smaller chedis. In 1477, the World Sangkayana convened here to revise the doctrines of the Buddha.

This wat is markedly different in style from the others in Chiang Mai. Its unusual design featuring a main rectangular chedi with seven spires (chet yot) derives from its Indian inspiration. More specifically, Wat Chet Yot copies the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. The temple also shows elements of Burmese, Chinese Yuan, and Ming influence.

Beneath the seven spires is a cave containing a Lanna-style Buddha image, sculpted in the mid-15th century. Around the base of the chedi are 70 smiling heavenly beings adorned in luxurious clothes and fine jewelry. The extraordinary proportions, the angelic, levitating figures carved into the base of the chedi, and the juxtaposition of the other buildings make Wat Chet Yot a masterpiece.

A door inside the niche containing the Buddha leads to the roof on which rests the Phra Kaen Chan (Sandalwood Buddha). There is a nice view from the roof, but only men are allowed to ascend the stairs.

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, Lampang

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, at Ko Kha about 18 km (11 mi.) south-west of Lampang, is one of Thailand's most beautiful temples. The finest ornamentation probably dates from the time of Princess Chama Devi (c. 650-700), supposedly the founder of this temple complex. During its long history this may well have been where the local people sought refuge from plundering invaders such as the Burmese, sheltering behind the thick walls which encompass the wat and give it its fortress-like appearance. Long flights of steps lead up to the entrances in the north and east, their balustrades in the serpentine form of a many-headed Naga, an unmistakable feature of Burmese architecture.

Wat Mahathat Worawihan, Phetburi

Wat Mahathat is in the middle of the town of Phetchaburi. It is said to have been built during the Khmer’s presence in the region, more than 800 years ago. Inside the Wihan Luang are the three major Buddha images of Phetchaburi. While the main prang is the most visible item of the temple, which is visible from the hills around town, there is much detail work to be enjoyed here like murals or excellent stucco work. This is a very busy temple, with dancers, music and lots of people and it is a good starting point for a walk through the city.

Wat Lai Hin, Lampang

Wat Lai Hin or Wat Lai Hin Luang is also called Wat Sela Rattana Papphataram. It is located not far from the famous Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and is a very tiny temple. The beautiful gate, viharn, cloister, chedi and ubosot are all very small but nevertheless beautiful examples of Lanna architecture. The Phra Viharn had been built by Chiang Tung school of Lanna-style and contains an old Lanna-style statue called Phra Pratan Wat Lai Hin Luang. We visited this important temple during the Thai New Year festivities, which brought lots of people to this otherwise quiet site.

Wat Suthat, Bangkok

Wat Suthat Thepwararam (Thai: วัดสุทัศน์เทพวราราม) is a royal temple of the first grade, one of six such temples in Thailand. Construction was begun by His Majesty King Rama I in 1807 (B.E. 2350). Further construction and decorations were carried out by King Rama II who helped carve the wooden doors, but the temple was not completed until the reign of King Rama III in 1847 (B.E.2390). This temple contains the Buddha image Phra Sri Sakyamuni or "Sisakayamunee" which moved from Sukhothai province. At the lower terrace of the base, there are 28 Chinese pagodas which mean the 28 Buddhas born on this earth. Wat Suthat also contains Phra Buddha Trilokachet in the Ubosot (Ordinary Hall) and Phra Buddha Setthamuni in Sala Kan Parien (Meeting Hall)

Thank for finding them. Even though it is not so grand, I think this is a really beautiful temple and the name is very fitting.
