Indonesian divorce rate up 10 fold since reform era

JAKARTA, Feb 5 — The Religious Affairs Ministry revealed that the number of divorces per year in Indonesia has increased 10 fold since the end of the new order era in 1998, and that political differences between husbands and wives is being cited more frequently as a cause.

During the late Suharto's new order era, which crumbled in 1998, there was an average of 20,000 divorce cases per year, but the rate has shot up to more than 200,000 per year.

“The number of divorce cases is increasing every year and I don’t know why. It’s probably because women now have a greater awareness of women’s rights,” director-general for Islamic guidance at the Religious Affairs Ministry Nasaruddin Umar told journalists in Jakarta with a laugh.

“About 2 million couples get married every year, and more than 200,000 couples get divorced for various reasons,” he said, adding that divorces were most common in Semarang, Central Java, Bandung, West Java, Medan, North Sumatra and Surabaya in East Java.

He said an increasingly common reason for divorce was a clash of political views.

“Believe it or not, some couples decide to divorce because the husband and wife have different takes on political issues. This has never happened before,” he said.

In 2005, 105 couples divorced citing a conflict over political issues. The figure increased to 502 couples in 2006. The ministry has not determined the figures for 2007 and 2008.

“I am sure the number could climb higher and higher every year, especially in 2009,” Nasaruddin said.

Other common given reasons for divorce are economic factors, unfaithful spouse, ethnic differences and religious differences.

“Many couples insist on marrying even if they are of different religions, and 90 per cent of those marriages end with divorce,” Nasaruddin said.

The most frequent reason cited in religious courts for divorce is polygamy.

“Data from 2006 shows that as many as 879 couples divorced because of [polygamy],” he said.

He said that he believed women were becoming increasingly aware of their rights thanks to the efforts of NGOs and women activists, which have run campaigns against polygamy.

Scholars and activists have welcomed the development, saying it shows women are becoming more independent economically and that more women are receiving higher education.

According to recent reports, polygamy is on the rise in Indonesia. The Legal Aid Foundation of the Indonesian Women's Association for Justice received 87 reports of polygamy last year, up from 16 in 2007. — Jakarta Post

Anybody know the divorce rate in Indonesia? Is it rising or still less than the 50% rate in the US? Most of my relatives except one uncle (who divorce) are still married. I do have a friend who has divorced parents in her family.

Too many elections might be pushing up the divorce rate, with women leading the way.

The Director General of the Islam section of the Department of Religion, Nasarudin Umar, held a press conference on 15th July to discuss the problem of divorce in Indonesia, which he said was getting much worse.

Umar worried that the divorce rate had doubled in recent times, and:

...for every 100 marriages there are 10 divorces, and usually divorces occur in young families.

In the six major cities in Indonesia he said the data showed that women initiated divorce proceedings in 60-75% of cases, depending on the city. Women took the lead these days, he said, because they felt they had the same rights as men, and because of the effects of globalization. He said the Muslim community needed to have a think about whether women were going over the top in this area, or not.

While the Quran clearly teaches that divorce is halal, or permitted, it is actually most hated by God, he said, and 80% of verses in the Quran deal with family harmony issues, while, for example, comparatively few deal with matters of state or the broader society, because state and society cannot be ordered properly unless families are stable and happy.

Umar's data on cases, and causes of divorce, with the reasons given for separation as

incompatibility (because of adultery) - 54000 cases
disharmony - 46000
economic hardship - 24000
interference by relatives - 9000
family crisis - 4700
forced marriage - 1700
domestic violence - 900
polygamy - 879
biological defect (like infertility) - 580
underage marriage - 284
imprisonment - 150
Although only 157 cases were put down to "political differences" Umar worried at some length that with all the provincial elections going on now, and in the run up to the 2009 national election, differences in political views threatened to tear apart many more families. [1]

Divorce rates jump in Indonesia after reforms
Indonesia News.Net
Thursday 5th February, 2009 (IANS)

Women's emancipation and political differences have contributed to a sharp rise in divorce rates in Indonesia since democratic reforms were introduced more than 10 years ago after the fall of autocratic president Suharto, the ministry of religious affairs said Thursday.

The divorce rate has increased steadily every year during the past decade and, during last year, 10 in 100 marriages ended in divorce, the ministry said in a news release posted on its website.

The ministry said two million couples get married every year in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country.

In Indonesia's second-largest city, Surabaya, 80 percent of 48,374 recorded divorces were initiated by women while in the capital, Jakarta, women filed 60 percent of the 5,193 divorces, the statement said without giving a timeframe for those figures.

Nasaruddin Umar, the ministry's director general for Islamic community guidance, said divorces triggered by differences in political views increased every year and the trend was cause for concern.

'Political issues are short-lived, but family is a lifetime matter, and even beyond a lifetime,' he said in the statement.

Nasaruddin said he believed that more and more women were filing for divorces because they believed they had the same rights as men.

'Whether this is awareness or an excess, it's something that we have to pay attention to,' he said.

Under Indonesian marriage laws, men and women have equal rights.

He also said the majority of divorces were caused by general family disharmony while economic factors came second.

Suharto resigned in 1998 amid widespread unrest and clamour for democratic reforms after 32 years of autocratic rule. He died in January 2008.
